As soon as I stepped through the door, my mom said, "You're grounded." Of course, I expected this...but really? I haven't even walked into the house and you're already punishing me. "We lost track of time, Mom." I tried explaining.
She shook her head and asked, "Why didn't you atleast call and let me know you were going to be late, Nicole? That would have made things a little better."
"My phone was dead, Mom.." This was a lie but if it helps any I was going to try it.
It didn't. "Does his family not have a home phone? Or, you could've used Josh's cellphone." She starts rambling on and on about me not giving her the respect she deserves and how I've become a rebel.
I finally grew tired of it and said, "Maybe I should stay at Josh's...atleast they love me!"
Before she could retort something back, I broke down and ran upstairs.
I was laying on my bed crying when my phone began buzzing. It was Josh.
In between sobs, I finally got out "Hello?"
"Button? Are you ok?" His voice almost immediately calmed me.
"Not really," I said, "She grounded me and called me disrespectful and rebellious."
"Ouch. I'm sorry, Nicole." he said quitely.
His sincere comment, for some reason, made me laugh. "Don't worry. I'll be fine...I just wish I could go live with my dad."
Josh sounded surprised. "Oh? Where does he live?"
"Austrailia." I replied.
He was quiet for awhile but then said, "Nope."
"nope what?" I asked.
"I wouldn't allow it! That would be too far away for me." He stated.
I couldn't help but smile when I heard that remark. "You're so precious!" I said.
"It's what I do, Button." I could tell he was grinning when he replied back.
He continued, "So...am I still allowed to come over tomorrow?"
Unfortunately, that didn't come up in the conversation so I would have to go back down there and ask her.
"Uh...I'll let you know once I get enough bravery to go back down there." I replied.
He laughed and said, "Ok, Button. I'll talk to you tomorrow."
"Bye, Josh." I hung up and prepared to go back downstairs.
When I went downstairs, my mom was sitting at the table with two cups of cocoa.
"Can you sit down with me, please?" she quietly asked.
I sniffled and obediently sat down.
At first, we both just sat there in silence holding our mugs. But then, at the same time, we bursted out "I'm sorry!"
She sorta smiled and then said, "Oh honey, I didn't mean to yell at you like that...it's just I feel like I have to be stern with you since your father isn't here anymore."
I quickly replied, "It's ok mom. You were right...I should've called you...I'm sorry. And it's not your fault dad left! He was scared and not ready to be a parent."
She straightened up in her chair and stated, "Don't be silly, Nicole. You're father was more ready than I was...he doesn't deserve that excuse."
I took a sip of my cocoa and asked, "Then why did he leave? Why did he abandon me?!"
Before my mom even replied, I knew she would leave me clueless.
"You and I will never know the real reason, baby. I think we should just let it be." With that, she stood up, kissed me on the forehead and made her way to the bedroom.
"Mom! Wait, um...Josh and I are supposed to have a study session here tomorrow....is that ok?"
She hesitated but then said, "I suppose. As long as it takes place in the kitchen."
When she had said this, I kinda laughed to myself and thought,That's ok, mom. Josh and I can still do "stuff" in the kitchen.
