She called me into the study with the most frightening look I had ever seen lighting her lined face. You would have thought I could have guessed what came next, but I didn’t have the foggiest. She smiled at me as I pushed my bum back onto my red chair and stretched my legs in front of me, looking around at the beautiful but small room, in which everything, except me and the lady, was made entirely out of wood. I smiled at my lady trying to suck the most out of this rare meeting, she did not smile back.
I couldn’t help noticing that the curtains were drawn and although it might seem to have been, it was not unusual for me to be corresponding with this lady I knew so well in the seat opposite her desk. In fact the majority of the conversations I had with the lady with the red hair were spent in front of her desk.
“Your shirt isn’t tucked in, Thomas” She said, coming around the front of her desk, she winced as she left the safety of its surrounding area, as though it was her protection. She bent down in front of me, and began tucking my shirt in at the front. This rare contact made my heart hammer twice as fast and I stared closely at the thick curls of my lady with the red hair. She didn’t move after completing a round circuit of my stomach, but bent down and looked into my eyes, as though she had never really seen me properly. “Thomas, daddies had an accident”.
I looked at her locks confused as my brows knitted together, still staring at her hair I asked;
“Has he gone to the bathroom?”. She sighed.
“No Thomas, not that kind of accident, this is more serious” I waited, still confused. I couldn’t think of anything worse or more embarrassing than having an accident.
“Thomas daddies gone to heaven, in the sky” This I couldn’t understand. Why would daddy go away?
“Will he come back?” I asked, my face feeling hot as I rubbed my hands together.
“No I’m afraid not, but you will see him again one day. In the mean time you’re going to be living with me in London”. Her face was very close to mine, her eyes over bright and for the first time in my life, I reached up and tried to wrap my arms around her, although at this distance I could only just reach her shoulders. She leaned forward and accepted my hug. I thought carefully as I held on, If I could see daddy one day, why couldn't I see him now? If daddy couldn't see me, I would find a way to see daddy.
