CHAPTER 1

Every direction I turned I was met with more dense, green forest. The small amount of light that was coming through the trees began to vanish as the air grew cold. I could hear the faint roar of a wild animal that I guessed I didn’t want to run into. Where was I supposed to go? I shivered as a rush of cold wind swept through, scattering the leaves on the forest floor. Close to tears, I sat down on the damp ground. Being lost had exhausted me more than I wanted to admit. Determined not to close my eyes, I began my night; lost, cold and alone.

My night moved slowly and I was drawn to the slightest movement or noise. I grabbed a nearby stick, my only weapon against the shadows of the night. I heard a stick snap, and I stood up abruptly. I looked around me, trying to pick out figures in the blackness. Another distant roar and I tripped over my own feet. I landed on the ground with a thud. Instantly my hand was covered in blood. A numbing pain took over.

I sat upright, holding my hand to my chest. I was hungry and my throat felt like it was on fire. I knew I was loosing too much blood, so ripped my shirt and wrapped it around my hand. I shivered; the night air was piercingly cold. My breathing grew uneven and the nauseous feeling in my stomach became all I could think about.

What seemed like an eternity later, the sun rose; shining a beacon of hope through the trees. The now-green forest was slowly coming to life, with chirping birds and distant roars. I thought I could hear a voice, but the lack of sleep was making me dizzy and confused. I tried to stand up, but, disorientated; I collapsed back to the hard ground. My hand throbbing again, I began to sob. I curled over on a bed of leaves, and cried myself to sleep.
