“Zeke, Aimee…” I paused, unsure of what I was about to find out.
“Nothing Indi, don’t worry about it,” said Aimee hurriedly, not quite meeting my gaze.
“Guys. I heard you, don’t insult my intelligence and say I didn’t.”
Zeke sighed, a sad and disappointed look washed over his face.
“Fine, I’ll tell you. But, you should know, Aimee had absolutely nothing to do with this. She just kept the secret, against her will. If she had had it her way, well; it’s complicated.”
I sat down, leaning against the base of the couch.
“Well, the thing is… I could’ve taken you home the night I found you.”
“W, w, what?” I stuttered.
“I lied. Just because our parents are away doesn’t mean I couldn’t take you home. We have a golf buggy thing that easily would have made the distance. And, honestly Indi, you have to believe this.
I was going to take you home. But then I got to know you, and I wanted you to stay. Aimee insisted we should take you home, but I made her let me keep you her. Indi, I honestly just wanted to get
to know you.”
I stared at a blank spot on the wall, trying to comprehend what Zeke had just said.
“So, so you’re telling me that every time I was upset about home, Claudia or my parents, you could have taken me home? All that worrying, every night when I cried myself to sleep; that was
“You cried yourself to sleep!” exclaimed Aimee. She then leaned over to whack her brother on the head.
“Yeah. And I honestly thought that something good had come out of this when you kissed me Zeke. But, now I know it was all just a lie.”
“Whoa. Stop. That wasn’t a lie.”
“You know what, I don’t want to here it. Just, leave me alone. I’m going to pack my things.” I ran out of the room, fighting back tears.
I shut the door, and let myself slide to the floor. The tears leaked out, I didn’t have the strength to stop them.
About 15 minutes later there was a knock at my door.
“Indi… It’s Ai”
I interrupted before she could finish.
The door creaked open.
She walked in and sat down next to me on the floor.
“I’m sorry I had to lie to you.”
“Its, hiccup, ok, sob” I replied.
She leaned over to hug me, and wouldn’t let go.
“You know, he didn’t mean to hurt you.”
“Yeah, but it’s not just me. It’s Claudia. Aaron could have done anything to her. And my parents. They will be freaking out!!!!”
I couldn’t help but start to cry again.
“Shh, don’t cry.” Soothed Aimee.
“I want to go home now.” I said.
“It’s almost dark, can’t we wait until the morning.”
“Aimee, either you take me home or I walk.”
“Fine, I’ll walk.”
I grabbed my bag that was on my bed. I headed slowly out the door.
“Indi. I’ll drive you.”
I headed outside, taking one last look at this place that had been my home for 5 days.
Zeke was staring at me through the window. With a heavy heart, I turned away.
“Ready?” asked Aimee.
“Let’s go,” I replied.
In their cart, we drove through their backyard; along the river, towards the main road. I couldn’t help but stare at Zeke and I watched his face slowly fade away.
***NOTE*** i have just re-read some of my writing, and I realised that Claudia/Aaron and Aimee/Indi/Zeke are sort of a different times. i appologise of this confuses anyone. At the start of
chapter 16 (not the next one but the one after) they will be in sync.
