CHAPTER 9
Aimee, Zeke and I were sitting around their makeshift campfire in the backyard. Their shadows danced on the fence.
“So, Indi.” Began Zeke. “Only 3 days until you go home.”
“Yeah,” I said, wistful but also happy. I tried to hide the inner joy at the thought of going home.
“I will miss you guys so much, but…” I paused, trying to find the words I wanted.
“I’m really worried about Claudia. He could do anything to her while I’m away.”
“And you miss your family,” Aimee said.
“Yeah, my parents will be in hysterics. It will just seem like a disappeared off the face of the earth. But now isn’t a time to be thinking about that. I’m going to enjoy every last minute here, and that definitely includes devouring those marshmallows.” I laughed, reaching for the open packet.
“That is something I definitely agree with,” added Zeke, smiling thoughtfully.
After easily making our way through the marshmallows, Aimee decided it was time for bed.
“I’m catching up with Amelia tomorrow. We’re leaving at 6 to go to Cooper’s Point.”
“Sounds fun,” I said. “Night.”
“Night Indi.” She said, slowly heading inside.
I shivered in the cool night air.
“Are you cold? You can have my jacket if you want.” Said Zeke, leaning towards me.
“Thanks,” I replied.
“I’m going to miss you so much Indi. You don’t know how much I’ve enjoyed having you around.” He murmured quietly.
“You haven’t been bad company yourself.” I answered, using the same quiet, thoughtful tone.
I smiled at him, secretly glad he couldn’t see my face; which was crimson.
Another cool gush of wind swept through the yard. I yawned sleepily.
“I guess bed isn’t such a bad idea,” Zeke chuckled.
“Yeah, maybe not.”
After he put out the fire, we walked slowly inside.
“See you in the morning Indi.”
“Night Zeke.”

I lay in my bed, not tired at all. My brain wouldn’t stop whirling. Zeke’s smile was plastered across my mind. I tried to snap myself out of it, it didn’t work. Was I falling for Zeke? I’d only known him three days. But being around him, it was maybe the one reason I could find to stay. I smiled, and rolled over. Zeke would be there to worry about in the morning.
