“Maria!” A hand grabs my shoulder and I spin on my heel. About to throw a punch, my eyesight catches my victim. Lylah Campell, head cheerleader who is currently dating Jacob Lyon, star quarterback. She looks at me startled and takes a quick step back then smiles. “Maria,” She gives an exaggerated sigh. “I’ve been searching all over for you!” I give her a suspicious look and raise my eyebrow. “Mrs. Melfrey, our math teacher,” She says as if I didn’t know my math teacher. “She wanted me to tell you she needs to see you immediately.” A bouncy nodding of her head is added onto the end.

“I see Lylah. I’ll get right on it. Now why don’t you skip your happy little butt back over to you cheating boyfriend and never sneak up on me again or else I might not stop my hand from punching your lights out.” I smile sweetly at her and her face goes pale as she scampers away. But as she’s pretty much running away I hear one word that pisses me off. ‘Freak.’

I sit in my desk and a rage fills me, making my fists clench. I feel my face become heated and my body starts to quake. I close my eyes and slowly count to ten. The word swims through my head taunting me, fueling my anger. I feel my head start to spin and everything goes black.

The front door bangs open and my parents eyes go wide. My mom quickly scoops me up into her arms and takes me upstairs. She quickly removes the floorboard and starts to shove me inside. Being 6 and not knowing what was going on I cling to her arms and beg her not to make me go there. Her face is full of pain and fear and tears leave streaks down her cheeks. “Maria,” she croons softly to me. “Maria you have to go down there. We have to hide you before they come up. You have to stay here Maria.” She quickly covers the hole. I can hear the carpet being dragged back into place.

A loud bang is heard downstairs and I cover my ears. I curl up in a ball inside the dark hole. The rocking chair creeks and I know my mom is probably sitting in it rocking slowly back and forth. It soft creaking brings a comforting that only my moms voice could bring me. That comfort is destroyed when the upstairs door opens and tons of feet come charging into the room. Once again I duck and cover my ears.

“Where is she?” I hear a gruff voice ask. After my mom doesn’t answer he repeats it louder. “Where is the girl, the girl you would call a freak?” My mom still refuses to answer. One pair of feet gets closer to the rocking chair and he must have grabbed my mom because she screams out in pain. Tears start to race down my cheeks so I bite down on the blanket inside the hole. The man scream out “FREAK!”

Thud! I jump in my seat and shake my head trying to focus on everything around me. Quiet chuckles and giggles fill the room but my eyesight stays blurred. “Miss. Caseriss may I ask you why you are in lala land and not paying attention in my class?” Mr. Kolah, Social Studies teacher with a crush on Miss. Mildred the school nurse, asks. My eyesight clears and I look up at him with a questioning look on my face.

“Beg your pardon?” I ask with a raised eyebrow. He just gives me a disappointed look and goes back to the chalkboard and continues to write. I shake my head again and look around myself with a stern look on my face that warns all that if they are laughing at me they better watch out. Everyone goes quiet and once again there is a thud on my desk. I spin around and glare up at Mr. Kolah. “Yes?” I ask with a sarcastic tone. “How may I help you?”

“Miss Caseriss that just gave you 2 weeks worth of detention. Enjoy.” He pretty much snarls. No one laughs but everyone looks wide-eyed at the teacher. He was one of the most laid back teachers here at Miligan High. A few people whistled. I just shrug and lay back in my desk, propping my feet up onto the desk. I give him a raised eyebrow daring him to say anything else. He doesn’t and just turns around to once again write on the board. All I knew was They were not going to be happy. Getting in trouble was not allowed, there would be a bigger punishment later.
