Death Crow

Chapter One

I woke up from the deepest sleep I could remember, like I was in hypnotic trance or under some sort of spell that made me sleep.  Bright white light encased me blinding me to the point I had to close my eyes again.  And even though my muscles were so tired I had a hard time moving, sleep was the last thing on my mind.

I opened my eyes enough to see the tiniest detail through a haze of light and saw people come into focus.  The intensity of the brightness was overpowering and I closed my eyes and covered them with my arm.  The looks on the people's faces implied something was wrong.  Like I was gravely ill.

I attempted to speak but it only came out as a hoarse whisper. I coughed a nasty cough and did it repeatedly until my throat was cleared.

"Lights," I murmured and when i opened my eyes again, it was easier to see.

"Are you okay?" asked a woman who looked in her twenties with eyes such a light blue they were almost gray and a light brown hair.

"Am I supposed to be?" I croaked putting my arms behind me and pushing in an attempt to sit up.  Hands gently guided me  to help me accomplish this task.

The world was now spinning like my mind couldn't grasp the concept of being vertical.  The room came to a halt a few seconds later.

Slowly, I slid my feet over the edge and realized my feet were bare.  I angled a toe down to gently touch the floor.  It was quite cold.  I shivered immediately and someone slipped some socks on my feet.  They weren't  too soft nor were they too uncomfortable.

I touched the ground again and the socks kept my warmth.  I put both feet on the ground and shared some weight with them.  No one was stopping me from standing; they all had eager eyes.  My legs were tingling as more blood was sent to my feet.

As I started to stand, my legs wobbled trying to keep my balance.  Again, no one was stopping me.

I was standing now.  My arms were out; they didn't trust my legs.  This was such a difficult task it might as well have been tight-rope walking.

A glass of water was on a tray a few feet away.  They must be expecting me to walk there.  Oh, how did they know.

But why were they helping me? I had no idea who they were.  They looked upon me with eager eyes.

I took around six steps and reached for the water.  It was completely clear and the glass had no imperfection, not even a smudge.  I rested my hand on the glass.

"Who are you?" I asked.  They all looked at each other.  "Okay... well if that's too personal for you, where am I?"  Same response.

I was about to take a sip of water when someone finally spoke up.  "You're in a hospital."
