There was a shot fired in the house and then the howling, that damn horrible howling, broke out.It sounded like it was all around us.Doug hobbled into the garage through the laundry room door, Nadia on his heels.Slim Appeared next and everyone went for the van.It rocked on its wheels as everybody piled in.Greg slammed the door shut behind us and then Ginger was backing into the room, her gun up at her shoulder.
She squeezed off a shot, and missed the single step that led down into the garage. She fell backwards and dropped her shotgun.A dark shape came through the door and lit on top of her.Struggling with it, she got to her side and then it slipped around to her back, and lowered its head against her throat. There was a shot from behind the van and the yellow-eye’s body jerked but it held on, snarling and howling its pain.
There was another bang against the garage door.Howls came from inside the house.Greg fired my pistol again from behind the van and the yellow-eye on Ginger rolled from her back and lay still on the floor.Greg ran out from behind the van as another one came through the laundry room door.He fired into its chest and ran into it, bowling it over.Reaching the door, he tried to throw it shut but it was knocked back open into his body as still another yellow-eye emerged from the house. His gun clattered to the floor and he leaned his weight against the door, trying to force the yellow-eye back into the house.
Slim was struggling out of the van.Moving to fast for his injuries, he tripped and went to the floor.Ginger made it to her feet, recovered her shotgun and was at the door in a few steps, triggering a shot as she jammed the barrel into the yellow-eye’s middle. He howled and fell back.Greg slammed the door shut and scrambled around the side of the van, jumped in the driver’s door and then noticed Slim. With a curse, he popped his door open as Ginger knelt over Slim and jerked him to his feet.Nadia was out of the van trying to help.
The door from the house burst open again and there was a press at the door as several yellow-eyes tried to squeeze through at once. One squirted through and spun crazily into the room, lost his balance and careened into the side of the van, his head making a loud crack as he hit the side panel with his crown. He fell to his face but got up quickly, blood running from a cut in his forehead.Ginger swung and fired. He flew back and as she tried to swing her gun around on the two that followed him through, one of them jerked the shotgun from her grasp.
Dale leaned out the side door and fired into the garage.Ginger cried out in pain as part of the shot scored on her.Blood sprayed the side of the van.Greg got around the side of the van and tackled the yellow eye Dale had aimed for. They went skidding forward in a heap and Greg got on his back, pulled his fist back and started pounding him in the back of the head.Dale squeezed off another shot and caught the remaining one square in the back.He flew forward and crashed into the wall before sliding lifelessly to the floor.
Greg was still locked up with the one he had tackled and nobody could get in a shot. The yellow-eye tried to fight back.He jerked convulsively, trying to throw Greg off, but Greg wrapped his legs around his middle and grabbed a fistful of hair and slammed his head into the hard concrete floor. At first the yellow-eye screamed and howled then he grew quiet. After about a dozen of the dull thuk noises were made from the yellow-eye’s head meeting the concrete, there was a wet splat and his limbs started twitching.
Greg pushed off of him and stood, looking around.Everyone was in the van.Ginger had crawled in with Nadia’s help and laid across the middle seat, blood pouring from a multitude of tiny puncture wounds from the shotgun blast.Dale was leaning forward, her shotgun pointed out at the door to the laundry room. Greg turned, found that Slim was back in the passenger seat and then looked back toward the door, his face hard with determination. There was another bang on the garage door from outside and he whirled around. He stared at the door for a second, then turned to Dale and held out his hand.
“Give me your gun!” he commanded.
Dale handed it over to him and Nadia leaned forward and slid the door shut.Slim popped his door open and tried to step out but Greg slammed his door shut before he could even move from his seat.
“No!” he screamed.“Nadia, get in the driver’s seat!”
Nadia climbed forward between the seats and slid into the pilot’s chair.Ginger tried to rise from her seat and slumped back down, a pained cry escaping her lips.Doug pulled her head onto his lap and held her down as she turned her face into his shirt and let out a choking sob.Greg stepped back from the passenger door, his eyes locked with Slim’s.Slim put his face in his hands.Greg turned away and slammed the garage door with his fist.
“You still out there fucker?”He banged again.“You hear me?”
There was an answering bang from the other side of the door followed by a snarl and then more pounding.Greg turned to face the van.
“Turn it on!”
Nadia started the van, turned on the lights.Dale was gripping my wrist, her nails dug into me.Greg bent over and slid the rail lock free from the track on the right.Crossing in front of the van he went to the track on the left side.
“I’ll get in if I can!” he screamed at us.
Crouching, he held the shotgun one handed in his right hand, leveled at about stomach height and at an angle to take any yellow-eye that might be outside and close to him.Howls erupted outside, too many of them. His face went white and his eyes rounded in fear. The garage door slammed open and a dark shape with shining yellow eyes darted into the room.Dale screamed as it collided with the side of the van, snarling, snapping its jaws.It pressed its face against the window and dragged its nails across the glass.Dale shrank away, buried her face in my chest.
Greg pulled the lock and threw up the door with a jerk and fired.Nadia put the van in drive and gasped at what lay beyond the door. The yellow-eye at Dale’s window pushed himself away from the side of the van and ran around back and up the side toward Greg. There was a deafening roar inside the van and it filled with the sulfur sting of gunsmoke.Glass shattered and the ruined yellow-eye slammed into the garage wall.Ginger was up on her knees, her barrel smoking as she gasped and panted from the effort it ahd taken to rise, turn and fire.
Outside, the howling continued. There was another shot from Greg and then they were on him. There must have been fifteen of them gathered outside. He tried to fire but the shotgun was empty.Nadia started to open her door and Slim leaned across her with a grunt and pulled it shut.Bodies piled against the van, pressing, snarling, hating. They were seeking a way in.One threw his claw against Slim’s window and it exploded inward, the square shards of safety glass spraying over Slim.He gripped the arm as it came through the window and sank his teeth into its wrist.
Greg was buried under a pile of writhing snarling yellow-eyes.His screams were agony, terrified shrieks. We could hear the wet sounds of his flesh being torn apart as his screams died abruptly.Nadia gunned the gas and sent several of the yellow-eyes flying as she struck them. The van bounced as Nadia ran over one of the yellow-eyes.
Angry frustrated blows landed on the side of the van as we swept through the mass of hateful creatures and then we were down the drive, hanging a left too fast out onto Pleasant Valley. The van rocked on its tires, threatened to go up on two wheels and then settled in with a lurch as she straightened out and pegged the pedal to the floor.
“Slow down!”Slim screamed at her.
She didn’t listen, just kept accelerating. The motor whined loudly and the van started to shake as we approached too high of speeds.Slim yelled at her again and she still didn’t listen.Ginger joined in Slim’s protests with no result.Soldier yowled in fear. When Nadia refused to listen a third time, Slim leaned over and slapped her across the face. She cried out and he yelled again.
“Slow down you’re gonna get us killed!”

She gasped, let her foot off the pedal and applied the brake. We slowed to a more manageable speed and she concentrated on driving for several minutes.Once she was settled in, she started to cry quietly.Slim reached over and slid a hand around her shoulder and rubbed as she drove.Ginger struggled up and turned to look at Dale and me.Dale reached her hand out to her and Ginger burst into sobs before lying back down across Doug’s lap.The road slipped away beneath us and we drove on into the night.I looked out my window and stared at the moon.It was bigger.
