It was a rainy day and I was cold and hungry. Well hungry would be a total understatement, I was literally famished. I had no energy left and I was soaked by all the rain.

I sat on the wooden bench with my knees up to my stomach. I had no where to go. I had no home anymore. I hadn’t the strength to live anymore.
I knew that I had to take drastic measures in order to survive.

I saw someone from the corner of my eye and I turned to look. It was a man in a long black coat. He was paying someone for watching over his car. I watched him carefully and then had an idea.

I slowly climbed off the bench and walked out of the dirty dark ally way. I was now freezing as I could feel the cool winter breeze. I gulped and just kept on walking.

I knew I had to do this. I merely focused on one thing. I was like a snake hunting its prey. I ran towards the man and snatched his black leather purse.

I could hear him shout for me to stop but I ignored him because I knew I couldn’t. I ran as fast as my legs could carry me but soon slowed down as I hadn’t the strength to run.

I suddenly fell on the floor and gasped as I could feel my knee bang roughly on the dense floor. The man caught up with me and leaned forwards with anger plastered all over his face.

I narrowed my eyes at him in concentration as the rain drops were literally getting into my eyes. His expression softened after a few seconds.

"You’re a girl?" he said as he lifted his purse off the ground. I just looked away in shame.

I could feel his arm on my back as he lifted me back to my feet. I gasped as I was moved by his touch.

"So are you going to tell me why you would go to the extreme of snatching someone’s purse?" he asked me. "I’m sorry" I said with little energy in my voice.

"Why are you soaking?" he asked as he looked at me. My hair was flat and wet, the white t-shirt I had on literally stuck to my skin and the jeans I had on looked really damp.

"It’s raining isn’t it?" I muttered as I let out a pathetic laugh. "Come to my car, I’ll drive you home" he said as he took off his coat and put it over my shoulder.

We walked to his car and I stepped in. Ok, maybe I didn’t have a house to go ‘home’ to but I needed to be in a warm place right now.

He picked up the sandwich that he had in his car and handed it to me. "Eat up, you must have been outside for ages, you must be hungry" he said kindly.

Although I had already bothered him enough I hadn’t the strength to refuse. I opened the plastic cover and quickly pulled out the sandwich. I could see my hand tremble as I looked down at the sandwich and licked my lips.

I never wanted anything more than I wanted this sandwich. I soon started to eat it.

Ok, eating is one thing but the way the man was looking at me sort of proved I wasn’t just eating, well not like a normal human being anyway.

When I finished I noticed he was looking at me with a smile on his face which made me burn up.

"Ok, now that you have eaten, tell me your name and where you live so I can take you there" he said as he buckled his seat belt and turned on the engine.

"I’m Gabriella and I…" I said as I went off at the last part. He looked at me and gave me a look as if to say ‘and you what?’ and I turned to look outside the window before saying

"I don’t have a home" It came out as a bit of a sob. "What do you mean you?.. I don’t understand?" he muttered confusedly.

"Neither do I" I sighed and removed his coat from my shoulder. "Thank you for what you did for me" I smiled before opening the door to leave.

He leaned over to my side and slammed the door shut. I gasped a little as it startled me and turned to face him with a confused expression written all over my face.

I noticed that he was still leaned towards me with a hand on the door handle which was next to me and I shifted uncomfortably in the car seat. He was too close for comfort as he was literally inches from my face.

He noticed my expression then moved back up to sit in his seat. "There was a car coming" he muttered. I was still too confused to say anything.

"I’m Kevin by the way" he said as he extended his hand. I looked down to his hand for a few seconds without moving.

"It’s ok, I wont bite" he grinned and I reached out to shake his hand. "Well I guess I have no other choice" he muttered before backing out the driveway.

"Meaning?" I asked. "I’ll let you stay at my house until you get yourself sorted" he said as he glanced at me with a kind-hearted smile.

"You don’t have to do tha-" I said as he cut me off. "Oh yes I do, what kind of pathetic man leaves a girl on the streets?" he asked. My father, I thought.

"I’m just not that type of person" he continued. His voice was soothing and his kind words made me feel good.

I just sat quietly in the passenger seat. I was too exhausted to make conversation and fell asleep on our little journey to his house.

"Ella" I heard a man’s voice whisper to me and I groaned sleepily before opening one eye. I could see Kevin smile and it was exposing his dimples. I liked the fact that he had already given me a nickname, it was sweet.

I opened my other eye now too. "Are we there?" I asked and he nodded. "Yeah, come on, lets head inside" he said as he stepped out of the drivers seat.

I too stepped out of the car and walked towards the house that stood in front of us. He unlocked the door and turned the handle.

The lights were already on and I could smell something burning. "I think something is burning" I told him.

He walked into the kitchen and I could hear him talk quietly to someone although I couldn’t make out what they were saying.

Kevin soon returned with someone by his side. It was a young lady with blonde hair and piercing blue eyes. Is that his girlfriend? I thought. She was really beautiful.

"Lisa, I’d like you to meet our new friend Gabriella" he smiled. "It’s so nice to meet you Gabriella, Kevin filled me in on what had happened" she said as she smiled politely.

"Ella, this is my wife Lisa" he said and I slightly widened my eyes in surprise but soon masked it. It’s only normal for a guy to want to tie the knot with this woman.

"Hi Lisa" I smiled politely back at her. "You have a really nice home" I complimented her but then heard the word home echo in my head which made me a little sad.
