Life's a Witch
By: Katheirne Taylor
I'm Ella Barnett and I have a big secret. You hear every teacher ask, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” and, well, we never really know. But I do. I know exactly where I am going to stand 20 years from now. I know what I am going to be when I grow up. I knew since the age of 7. It was July 8th, 2005. I was in my bedroom, daydreaming about my drawings and how I wished they could come to life. And, you know how every young child believes in magic and wishes they could be a princess, or a fairy princess, or.. Well, you get the point. So I got the idea of spells and potions, and I didn't think it would really work. I got some extra birthday candles, since my birthday was the day before. I had seen this in all the movies I watched, most of them were Horror movies or things like 'The Craft'. I had set the candles on my desk then, I had gotten a moonstone necklace out of my drawer. I can’t remember exactly what I had said, because, since I didn't know any real spells, I had to wing it. But, I think it went something like this: “Oh, please, show me what I am in my heart. Show me what I am meant to be. Show me what my destiny is and what I shall always be inside.” I had my necklace on at the time I said it and the candles were lit. I know. A 7 year old should not play with fire, but hey. I am a little odd for a girl. Back to the story. I didn't feel any different, but it was worth a try. The next day was time for my bath. Ugh. I stepped in, and felt somewhat, well... Weightless. I don't know why but something seemed odd to me. About 10 seconds later, I fell onto the bathroom floor. It was really weird. One minute I'm climbing into the bath, the next minute, I'm on my back. I sat up, rubbing my head, “Ow...”. So I thought, 'Well, maybe I just slipped, or something... I looked at the bathtub. This was so not what I expected. There was no water on the bath tub. And why did I feel weightless? “Ella! Are you in the bath?” my dad called from outside the bathroom door. “Yeah!” I lied. I was momentarily freaked out. I was not going in that water again. I just wrapped myself in a towel, let the water out, and walked back to my bedroom. But what I didn’t know, was that things were going to get even freakier. It wasn’t going to stop.
I'm 15 now and, well, things haven't gotten any easier. Now that I'm in high school, I chose art and Spanish for my electives. Unfortunately, there was no Spanish teacher to teach that class. I was thrown into the elective that I was counting on my life not to have. Swimming. I float. And there is a diving board. Not a good combination. I skipped a couple days, but they caught on. I was going to have to swim. It was too late to change classes. I was going to have to reveal my self. It was Tuesday night and My dad and I were at the dinner table. “Hey, dad?” I asked. “Yeah?” He said between two bites of bread and butter. “Can I get out of swimming? I think I'm allergic to the chlorine..” I lied, praying he would help me. “Really? Maybe I should take you to the doctor...” He looked at me. I squeezed my hand into a fist, using one of my other “abilities”. Basically, I’ve learned that I can also control the elements. I heated up my arms, making them red and blotchy. I needed evidence that I was allergic. I purposely dropped my fork so I could make my cheeks red and blotchy while he was not looking. I picked up my fork and set it on the table. “Sweetheart! My, goodness! Your all red!” He leaned over the table and felt my cheeks. “Your warm. I'm going to get the thermometer. Stay right here.” He left the table and came back with a white and blue thermometer. He stuck it under my tongue, in my mouth. “Normal... Huh. Just stay out of the water.. I'm going to talk to the principal, and have you put in a different class.. How about choir?” I nodded. I was good at singing. He put the thermometer away then continued eating. The next day of school, I was in choir. As I entered, I noticed how my wardrobe was different than anybody else there. I was wearing skinny jeans, brown high heeled boots, a brown tank top and a white t-shirt. I had on a brown, leather jacket and my moonstone necklace. I also had the longest dark brown, strait hair. As I walked to an empty seat in the back, I noticed a group of girls and two boys staring at me. I bowed my head and sat in the back, alone. One of the boys came over and sat next to me. He had bright blue eyes, like mine, and dark brown hair. I glanced at him then payed attention to the teacher, Mr. Hensley. He was okay, but he seemed a little young. The boy beside me just kept staring at me. I was starting to feel uncomfortable. The bell rang and I was up out of my seat and out the door. The group of girls cam up to me, smiling. “Hey! Your Ella, right?” One of the girls said. They all had the same color of blonde, strait hair and blue eyes. They all also had on the same pink skirt, pink flip flops, and white shirts with pink jackets. There were 3 of them. One of them caught me staring. “Yeah, we're triplets!” Another girl said. “I'm Leona.” Said the middle one, she had a pink bow in her hair. “I'm Rachel..” Said the one on the left, she was the shortest. “And I'm Samantha!” The last one said. She had her hair scraped into a ponytail. “Um.. Yeah.. I'm Ella..” I said, nervous. The boy that was staring at me came up to me with another boy at his side. They were both good looking and were the same height. “Hey.. I'm Jason.” Said one of the boys. He looked to be about 16 and had blue eyes. He, as well, had dark brown hair and it was cut in the new, popular style. Scene or something. He was wearing jeans, with a couple rips in the knees, a white, plain shirt, and a black leather jacket. He had on black converse as well. The boy next to him was the boy who had stared at me. “Hey, don't mind him.. He is a little strange. But that's why we love him.” Jason said with a laugh. He had a cute laugh. “I’m Bryce... Nice to meet you..” The other boy said. He held out his hand and we shook. Bryce had on jeans, black running shoes, a black shirt, and a black watch. He had the same hairstyle as Jason. He smiled at me. I smiled back. “Hey, Ella.. Do you want to come to our table for lunch?” Leona said. “Um.. Yeah, sure..” I smiled and nodded slightly. Before 5th period, we went to lunch. I met up with Leona,Jason, Samantha, Bryce, and Rachel. We sat at a round table, alone. “So!” Samantha said, breaking the silence. “Samantha, Your as obnoxious as an anchovy!” Exclaimed Rachel. “What?” I asked, unsure why it was fish that came as an insult. “Oh, nothing..” Rachel said quickly. I was about to take a drink from my water bottle when one of the girls accidentally knocked over hers, sending water everywhere. It took the triplets two seconds to stand up. “Uh oh!”. I watched as they ran to the bathrooms, falling to the floor, right at the entry of the girls bathroom. As we caught up with them, I caught Samantha right before she hit the cold bathroom floor. “Jason, go get towels. Ella, nice catch. Ill go and make sure no one sees her or comes in the hallway. Ella and Jason, try to dry them off.” Bryce said. He ran down the hallway. “Guys.. Try and be more careful..” Said Jason as he came back with the towels. “Why aren't you freaked out by us?” Leona asked. I just smiled and Samantha tilted her head in confusion. “Well, I am sort of a witch, you could say” I chuckled. Rachel nodded. “Were mermaids. Bryce and Jason are, well, you could say immortals.” Jason nodded and smiled and Bryce had a sad, ashamed look on his face. They were dry and human again. Rachel came back and explained it all to me. I felt like I was normal again and now that they under stood how I felt, always having to hide... As lunch ended, we agreed to meet at a nearby park, Moonlight park.
I was walking to 7th period, math, and I realized Bryce was following me. I turned around. “Hey, Ella.. I'm really sorry.. I-I don't know how to say it.... Um...” He looked nervous. “Hey, Bryce.. Its fine. Really.” I hugged him. “Thank you..” I said as I pulled away. He smiled then walked to his class. I realized there was nobody in the hallway. I walked to my math class, but no one was there. I asked the teacher next door where they were, but she said they should be there. I sighed. I just went to my locker. If I didn't know were they are, I might as well skip just this once. I opened my locker and put my bag in it then shut it. I secured the locked then turned. I was shoved hard against my locker and my head hurt badly. “Skipping class? That's not a smart thing to do, now is it, Missy.” I looked up to find a boy, devilishly handsome, but an evil smile spread across his face. He was wearing black jeans, black converse with black laces, a white t-shirt, and a black jacket. He had black scene hair and piercing, bright green eyes. My head hurt badly and my vision blurred slightly. There was a large dent in my locker door, were my head hit. “Tell Jason and Bryce to meet me in Moonlight Park tonight, or you will get hurt.” He spit at me. He then smirked and walked off. I put my hand to the back of my head and closed my eyes. I heard running and opened my eyes to find Bryce right next to me. “Ella.. What happened.” He said, his voice urgent and worried. He helped me up by gripping my waist and forearm. “I'm going to take you down to the nurse. You can tell me about it when you feeling well again.” He looked at me, walking with me to the nurse. I shook my head, feeling dizzy. “On the first few days of school, I've already managed to get myself into trouble” I tried to lift the mood. The corner of his mouth turned up to reveal a cute smile and he laughed. “I guess so.” He looked at me then we arrived at the nurses office. She told me to come inside, but that Bryce had to wait outside. I had a couple stitches in my head, and I had no intention of telling my dad what had happened. After Nurse Allen let me go, Bryce was waiting for me. “Hey.. Ella.. Can you tell me what happened?” He asked me. His eyes were worried. “Yeah..” I looked down. “This guy.. I-I don't know what his name was, but he had black hair and these weird, green eyes... He slammed me against my locker and he said, 'Tell Jason and Bryce to meet me in Moonlight Park tonight, or you will get hurt' then he walked away...” I shrugged. He shook his head and cursed under his breath. His fist was clenched tight and he punched the brick wall, causing a few chips to come off. “Look.. Tell Rachel, Samantha, and Leona to not come to Moonlight Park tonight. Because Jason and I have some business to take care of.” He said, his jaw tight. He started to walk away before I grabbed his arm, gently. “Can you at least tell me what his name was?” I asked, dropping my hand to my side. “Derek.” He said the name with hatred and something inhuman in his voice.
It was Wednesday night and I was sitting in my room, drawing and humming. I was working on my greatest drawing yet, a beautiful wolf. For some reason, I was always obsessed with wolves. I was working on the entrancing eyes, when I heard something at my window. I glanced at my window, then kept drawing. I heard it again. It sounded like nails tapping the window. I stood slowly then inched toward my window. I slowly opened it and looked outside. The crescent moon was bright and the moonlight seemed to spill into my room. I looked around, then shrugged, figuring it was a branch. Just as I had turned, and hand tapped my shoulder. I screamed but it was muffled by the hand that had touched me. I stopped screaming and turned around, ready to fight, throw a couple fists. But what I found was Bryce crouching on a branch that was beside my window. “You scared me!” I rolled my eyes and stepped to the side to let in in. He laughed and jumped inside, through my window. I closed my shudders and smiled. “I figured I'd stop by, see how you were doing.” He said, a slight chuckle in his voice. “And, how did you know where I lived?” I asked, a smirk on my face. “I just followed the smell of your potions and witchy stuff.” He joked. After laughing our heads off, he took a deep breath of air to make up for the laughing fits. He walked over to my desk, where every one of my drawings were hanging. “What's this?” He asked, picking up my wolf drawing. “I loved wolves ever since I was a little kid.” I shrugged. He smiled, a nice smile. “It's really good.” He said, putting the drawing down. Bryce turned to me, “Hey, your dads not here, right? So, can we go to Moonlight Park? Derek is not going to be there. He was too chicken poop.” He laughed at his bad word cover up. “Okay. Let me get my jacket and my shoes then we will go. Out my window.” I smiled. I grabbed my leather jacket and high heeled boots after replacing my pajama pants and a white t-shirt with my brown tank, skinny jeans, and an off-white, vintage blouse. I put my leather jacket on and put my boots on. We climbed out my window and down the tree, him first so he could catch me. We were walking in the small path in the woods, the moonlight lighting our way. “So how?” He asked, his hands behind his back and he was looking at the leaves that masked the ground. “How what?” I said, confused. “How did you become a witch?” He said, like it was so casual. “I was 7 and I was into spells and potions and stuff..” I answered, slightly embarrassed. He smiled then looked up, his eyes alarmed and he breath had quieted. “Wha-” I was about to say. “Shh! I hear something!” He whispered fiercely. He motioned me to stay there then disappeared into the trees. I waited for him the heard rustling. “Bryce?” I took a step forward. The next thing I know, I'm lying on my back with a burning pain in my arm. I sat up quickly, only to be facing Derek. “Hello again, Missy.” He said, sneering at me. “Ella.” I said. My arm was hurting badly now. He was pushing his hand on my wound. My arm was not broken, but merely twisted. He grabbed my arm and dug his nails into it, drawing blood. “Ella? What a nice name. What are you doing out here alone?” He asked, his breath smelled like something dead and rotting. “I'm not alone. I'm with-” I stopped. I couldn't put Bryce in danger. “I was just going for a walk.” I said just as he dug one of his nails into my wound. I sucked in a painful breath. “That's what I thought.” He crackled. He picked he up and tossed me over his shoulder. “You make a descent midnight snack” He said, walking quickly. I squirmed, trying to get away. I even pounded my fists on his back, trying to hurt him the least bit. “Ella!” I heard Bryce call. I was a couple miles away from where I had been attacked. “Ella! Where are you!” I heard him call again. “You said to were alone!” He hissed in my ear. “Call out to him.” He spat at me as he dropped me on the ground. I landed on my back, my breath getting knocked out of me. I shook my head, not wanting to put Bryce in anymore danger than he was in already. “Now!” He stepped on my wrist, were the pain was radiating from. “Aah!!!” I let out a small scream. Derek disappeared into the darkness. I heard Bryce's quick footsteps coming towards me, through the brush. He saw me and ran toward me. “Ella! What happened?!” He whispered fiercely. “Run. Go!” I said, trying to push him away. He helped me up, putting my arm around his neck and started to walk. “Bryce stop! Its Derek! He's here!” I tried to say, but it came out as a hoarse whisper. He stopped walking and set me down softly. He stepped away from me and looked around. “Derek! It's Bryce! You wanted me! Now, come and get me!” He yelled into the darkness of the forest. It was all a blur after that. Derek pounced on Bryce and they fought. It took only a couple minutes for Derek to retreat and go crawling back home. Bryce had not a scratch on him and he seemed not the least bit tired. “Ella... I'm so sorry. I shouldn’t have taken you here..” He lifted me back up and walked me home. I fell asleep as soon as my head hit the pillow. My dad didn't bother asking about my arm. I was at school the next day. Jason and Bryce stood by me at all times. Now that Derek knew my name and what I looked like, he also knew that I meant something to Bryce and Jason. Derek was not seen or heard from that day, not that anybody cared.
A couple nights later, It was time for the spring formal. As soon as a flier was handed out to me, my face lit up. I had waited for this all of my life. The only thing that bummed me out was that it was a masquerade dance. I didn't really have any masks or dresses, so my dad and I went out to buy one. It took hours to try them all on. The first one I tried was blue then it faded out to white at the bottom. It molded with my shape, it was strapless, and the hem went down to my knees. It was absolutely beautiful. My dad smiled but then he saw the price tag. I shrugged then walked back into the changing room. The last one I tried on was by far more beautiful than all the others. It was gossamer white and it also molded perfectly with my shape. I was skinny and I had curves, that I thought looked beautiful. The hem went all the way down to my ankles and from the waist line down, it was white, smooth, silk. It was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen in my life. My dad beamed at me. “Ella, you.. You look like an angel.” He smiled. He then stood up and I twirled in a circle, the dress's hem spinning around me. He chuckled then sent me back in the changing room. I changed back to my regular clothes and we bought the white, gossamer dress. As we walked to the car, I realized that it was already dark. I stepped into the passenger seat of my dads Ecsterra then shut the door. “Dad, thanks so much for the dress. It's lovely.” I smiled. “Lovely? Ella, since when did you become so... Old fashioned?” He chuckled. I just shrugged and peeked at the dress from inside the box. I smiled to myself and looked out the window at the almost full moon. The full moon, the night when I cant control my “abilities”. Tomorrow... I thought to myself. I looked back at the box. The dance is tomorrow... I closed my eyes then soon, we arrived home. I got out of the car and ran inside, up to my room. My walls were white and my carpet was an off-white. I ran in my room and set the box on my ocean-blue bed sheets. I got dressed into my skinny jeans, gray socks, black converse, black tank, and a gray t-shirt. I then opened the box and hung up my dress, putting it in my closet and matching the dress up with high heeled, white slippers and a satin white shawl to match. Not to mention the white mask. I smiled then caught sight of movement from outside my window. I smiled and rolled my eyes, closing my closet door. I then walked over toward my window, opening the shudders then looking outside. I found nothing but the pale moonlight shining on the ocean, far away. I went to turn away, then a hand reached out and covered my mouth. I laughed and forced the hand away. “Really funny, Bryce.” I said in a sarcastic tone of voice. But then the hand went back to my mouth, the nails pressing into my skin as it pulled me back toward my window. My eyes widened and an arm wrapped around me, limiting my movements. I was now unable to move my arms and I wasn’t able to run. I tried to scream for my dad, but the hand muffled my voice. With one quick movement, the being had pulled me out through my window and onto the ground. All of my breath had been knocked out of me and I was in to much pain to move. My lungs strained for air, but somehow, It was impossible to get. My vision blurred, then the world went black. I later woke up, finding my hands to be tied together, along with my ankles. I tried to scream, in an effort to catch somebody's attention. I soon realized that it was no use. “Ella... My poor, sweet Ella...” I jerked my head around to find Derek, leaning in the door way. I didn't even take the time to examine my surroundings. It looked like an old hotel room. Abandoned... I thought to myself. I looked back at him, hatred filling my eyes. “What do you want with me?” I said, making my voice sound bitter and cold. He threw his head back and laughed. Not the nice kind of heart warming laugh, but the kind that makes goosebumps flit across your skin and makes your spine tingle. He looked straight into my eyes and it felt as if he were peering into my soul. “Ella. Your close to my greatest two foes. And, for the most part, your a mortal. You are weak. I can destroy you like that.” He snapped his fingers, “And... I happen to find you sort of attractive... Then again, so does Jason and Bryce.” He smirked at me, and I felt the heat rush to my face. He then walked over to me and grabbed my chin, bringing my face uncomfortably close to his. A growl arose from deep in his throat. I winced, knowing now that he wasn't human. I was just a mere witch. I then heard the sound of water dripping. Water! An element! I Tried to move my hands, successful. I then spread my fingers out and I heard the water pipes start to tremble. I moved the water with my mind, making it inch towards him. It closed in around his body, leaving his head bare. I then put my fingers together and lay my hand flat. I froze the water, immobilizing him. I then used all my strength to break free of the ropes that bound my hands. I untied my feet and ran to the door, amazed that it was unlocked. I ran down the empty hallways and finally found the front doors. I checked my watch, finding that it was 3:26. My dad wouldn't be awake until 9. I ran down the streets then my heart stopped. I was lost in an unfamiliar place, while Derek was chasing me, ready to kill me. I was about to run, when a pair of arms grabbed me, emerging from the shadows. I screamed, but my mouth was covered by a hand. “Ella.. Shh.. He will hear you. Come on. Lets go.” A voice whispered. A voice familiar. “Jason?” I whispered. “Yeah” He whispered back. “I'm here too. Don't forget me.” Someone whispered. “Bryce?” I asked. “Yep.” They both came out of the shadows. “Your lip..” Said Jason, ripping a piece of his shirt off and dabbing at my lip. “What? Oh..” I realized my lip was bleeding, I had fallen while I was running. I looked down, then looked up as we heard the angry howls coming form Derek, nearby. I looked down at my hands, amazed that I was shaking. I had always been the girl to have never been scared. To always have a plan. But this time was different. I didn't have a plan. I was scared for the first time in a long time. I know, Ella. Its okay. I promise I wont let anyone hurt you. Said a voice inside my head. But it wasn't mine. Jason? How... I answered, not out loud. Ella... Just stay quiet, and you will be okay. He answered back. I nodded then we started to walk. We were walking in an ally and the sun hadn't come up yet, so it was complete darkness. As we were walking, I felt an arm snake around my waist. I screamed, this time, it was not silenced. Jason and Bryce turned around, only to find Derek with an arm around my waist and arms and the other holding a knife against my throat. “Give it to me. Or she dies.” Derek growled. Jason stepped forward, his fists clenched and his eyes blazing. “Let her go. Now!” He said, firmly. Derek threw back his head and laughed. “Not a chance. Not until you give it to me. Either way she'll probably die.” He smiled. Jason's eyes were red. Inhuman. “You can't have it. Its the only reason she is still alive. She will stay alive.” Jason's voice was low and wobbly, like he was about to explode. “Then should I tell her, Or should you. She really does believe this little charade.” Derek whispered. “What is he talking about, Jason. Bryce? What is going on. Somebody please tell me.” I said, careful not to lurch forward. Jason bowed his head the nodded. He looked up, his red eyes back to their normal blue. “You didn't become a witch with a spell, Ella. You only quickened the process of your power.” He said, trailing off for a moment. “You are the most powerful witch in the history of our world...” He looked away from me. “What are you talking about? My powers started the day after I did the spell. I saw it!” I said. “It was an illusion, Ella. You wanted to see it, so you made it real.” He nodded. “No!” I said, lurching forward. As I did, the knife dug into my flesh, the sharp blade sliding on the side of my neck. I felt the warm liquid start to trickle down my neck. My hands flew to my neck and my vision was blurry. I felt myself leaning toward the ground. My eyes closed, then just before I hit the ground, I felt strong arms cushion my head and pressure to my neck. “See what you did, Jason...” I could hear an echo to Derek's voice. Jason was holding me close to him. Everything was quiet. I couldn't hear them. I couldn't see. I was scared. I was alone. “Ella... Stay with me... Come on.. Don't do this to me.” I could hear Jason's voice, distant and fading. The pain was starting to fade, and so was I. “Ella...” I heard him say. Everything went dark. No sound. No light. Nothing but my fear.
I later woke up to a bright light. “Dad... Close the blinds.” I said sleepily. I tried to roll over, but found it painful. “Hey. Don't roll over. You'll mess up your stitches.” I heard an unfamiliar female voice say. I slowly opened my eyes and looked around. I was laying in a hospital bed, the bright lights burning my eyes. A female nurse was adjusting the iv tower. I covered the light's path with my hand. Jason and Bryce came in the room, followed by Rachel, Samantha, and Leona. “Ella! Omi-God! We thought.. Well...” They all said in harmony. I just smiled a little then looked away from Jason and Bryce. “Hey, Um... Can I have a little time alone with Ella?” said Jason, catching my glance. They all nodded and went outside of the room, even the nurse. Jason shut the door and turned toward me. “I didn't want to tell you just yet... It was not the right moment and I'm sorry...” He mumbled, scraping his hand through his hair. “What was Derek talking about. What did he want from you?” I asked, trying to sound as calm as possible. Jason rushed to my side as I winced, feeling the stitches in my skin for the first time. “Look, Ella. Its complicated. I wont let him get what he wants.” He nodded once. “Just give whatever he wants to him. When he gets it. He will leave us alone.” I said. Jason looked away, shaking his head. “Ella, Do you really want to know what he wants?” He looked me in the eyes. I nodded. “He wants your power, your life source. He wants you.” He looked down. I kept quiet, shocked by what he had just told me. “When he found out you were a witch, he wanted your power.” He said, knowing I was scared, shocked, and finally able to say I could cry. “What do you mean?...” I said, still in slight shock. “Ella... I might as well put this out on the table as well.... Hes got your dad.” He said. He said it so calmly, so casually. Like it was nothing. “What do you mean, hes got my dad?!” I said angrily. My fists were clenched tight and I was furious. How could he let this happen? “Ella... I know your mad, but it was either you or him... And if you were gone, we could never be together... So I let Derek have him. You'll get over it.” He shrugged. I was ready to explode now. “Us?!” I started to blurt out, “You think there will ever be an us?! You just let Derek have my Dad, the only thing that matters to me at this moment!!! I will never trust you! Go away! I never want to see you again!” I said, tears filling my eyes. Jason grabbed my wrist, his touch searing hot. “Don't you ever raise your voice at me. Don't you ever say anything like that again.” He said fiercely, his eyes blazing. My wrist was burning, it felt like it was on fire. “Let go of me. Your hurting me.” I said through clenched teeth. He blinked then let go of my wrist, revealing the newly red skin, burnt skin now. I looked away from him, tears starting to spill over. “Just get out...” I said in a hoarse whisper. He was silent then I heard him leave. As soon as the door closed, I was in tears. I buried my face in my hands then let myself fall back onto my pillows. The nurse ran in, her eyes worried. “Whats wrong?” I just forced my tears to stop and I sniffled. I then shook my head. “Nothing... I'm fine...” I said, nodding my head slightly. The nurse then walked back out of the room, but as I could tell, she was still worried. As soon as she left the room, I jumped out of bed and grabbed my clothes, pulling them on quickly. I came out of the bathroom wearing my skinny jeans, black converse, white tank top, and a brown leather jacket. I scraped my hair into a ponytail then jumped out the window, landing on my feet. I looked up and realized that I had jumped 7 stories. I smiled to myself then ran down the street. It was night time and I looked up at the full moon. I smiled to myself then heard music. I looked down the street, recognizing my school. The building was lit up with lights and banners. The spring formal... I thought. I knew I was missing it, but my little quest is a whole lot better than the cheep punch, paper decorations, and silly dancing. I then bound up the street, racing towards my house. I pounded on the door, wishing my dad would answer. All of a sudden I heard a crack and the door fell off its hinges. Because of me. My eyes widened and I laughed, but quickly ran inside. “Dad!? Dad! Where are you?!” I said, racing up the stairs. I entered my room and stood frozen, shocked. My room was unrecognizable. It had been ransacked by Derek. I clenched my fists, flying down the stairs. Literally. I skipped each step as I jumped down the stairs. I stared in amazement. I quickly took action though as I dashed down the streets, remembering where He had kidnapped me. I knew, just knew, that my dad would be there. I raced to the abandoned hotel, darting inside. I came to a halt after turning a corner, as I was face to face with Derek.
I glared at Derek, watching as he just smirked at me. “Give him back.” I said firmly, not taking my eyes off of his. He smiled and shook his head. “And ruin the game?” He laughed coldly. I clenched my jaw shut then relaxed. “I will do whatever you want. Just give him back.” I said calmly, but my eyes were fierce. “Anything?” He asked, tilting his head. I rolled my eyes, shaking my head. “Everything except for what your thinking.” I said, reading his mind. I didn't know I was, at first. He laughed again. “Okay, you can have him, but you, Missy, are coming with me.” He took my arm and picked up my passed out father, tossing him over his shoulder. He didn't let go of my arm as he climbed into his car, shoving me in the passenger seat and tossing my father in the back. He then let go of my arm as he drove to my house. He stopped and grabbed my father, disappearing into the house. He then later came back up, walking back to the car. He shut the car door and looked at me, both hands on the wheel. “Ella... Your such a dull, stupid girl.” He laughed then drove way. I turned my head away, from him, not wanting to give him the satisfaction of seeing me cry. “Hey..” He said, his voice actually sounding soft and nice. He gently took my chin in his hands and tilted my face towards him. “The road!” I cried as I saw from the corner of my eye, a semi truck heading strait toward us. There was a loud crash, then everything went dark. I opened my eyes, finding myself to be in no pain. But I looked up, seeing Derek carrying me. He didn't notice my consciousness, but was holding me to his chest. My vision blurred and I passed out again. I jolted awake in a gasp, then gripped my head in pain. “Ow!” I mumbled. “Hello, Sleeping Beauty.” Derek said from the shadows. I rolled my eyes, grumbling on about how he sucked at driving. Derek just laughed, then walked up to me. I didn't realize I was laying on an old dusty couch. He brushed hair out of my face, then took my hand in his. I jerked my hand away, then stood up. “What are you doing?” I said in confusion. I mean, seriously. Who kidnaps someone then tries to make them like you. He stood up, taking steps toward me, and I took steps back. I then pressed my back up against a wall as he cornered me. He smiled, slipping his hand behind my neck then tilting my head toward him. I thought he was going to kiss me, but then he jerked my neck toward his mouth. I felt the sharp pain of his teeth piercing my neck, and I let out an agonizing scream. “We’re going to be together forever.” He mumbled from the burrow of where my neck and shoulder met. All of a sudden, I was pushed to the floor with a loud bang as Derek growled and was tackled. A few moments was all it took for Derek to lie still on the ground. I closed my eyes and felt supportive hands on the back of my head and in between my shoulder blades, in the middle of my back. “Ella... I’m so sorry... I shouldn’t have left you. I should have protected you...” It was Bryce. I felt his warm salty tears on my cheek and seep into my wound as my head rolled to the side. He was crying. I tried to open my eyes, barely managing to turn my head to him. He opened his eyes and gasped, pressing his forehead to mine. “Ella... You... You’re alive...” He whispered hoarsely. I nodded then winced as he tried to lift my head by putting a hand on my neck. He covered his mouth, as my eyes slowly closed. I could feel myself slipping into the darkness, becoming weightless...
Alive I think
I groaned as the sunlight shined in my eyes, even when they were barely open. I sat up slowly, glancing around and taking in my surroundings. I was in my own be, safe and sound. Huh. How odd. All of a sudden my door creaked open, and I sighed in relief. It was my dad. “Hey Ella.” He smiled, “I was just going to come up and check on you.. You were pretty quiet last night. Then again, I slept pretty heavily, didn't I?” He laughed again. I nodded, then pulled my hand up to my neck, searching for the bite mark that was sure to be there, but to my surprise, there was none. My dad looked at me curiously. “Ella, are you alright? You look like you've seen a ghost... Wait. Actually, I don't want to know... Is it girl stuff. Um.” He smacked his lips, trying to talk in his best girl accent, “Ewe. That's like, totally, like, gross.” He chuckled and I laughed. He shut my door, leaving me with the sound of his laughing echoing down the hallway. I ran my hand around my neck again, to double check for the mark. It was not there. I stood up, finding myself to be dressed in my pajamas. “Hmm... Maybe it was just a dream...” I shrugged, getting dressed for school. I found clothes laid out for me, and I scratched my head. “My dad never lays clothes out for me...” I looked around, out my window and down the hallway. I shrugged again, then changed into the skinny jeans, gray socks, black converse, and black tank top that was laid out for me. I pulled my hair up into a ponytail, stomping down the stairs, and throwing my backpack on. I walked out the door, starting down the street sidewalk, when all of a sudden my dad yelled to me, “Hey! Ella! Ill give you a ride! Come on!” I looked at him in confusion, then walked to the car, getting in. My dad never gives me a ride. I shrugged it off, then put my backpack on the floor of the car, as he started up the engine. He looked at me for a second, then he drove me to school. He told me bye and I walked into the school, watching as, as usual, nobody even took a glance at me. I looked around for the triplets, then jumped as Bryce wrapped his arms around my waist, picking me up, then setting me down. “Bryce! Jeez! You scared me!” I laughed, and he laughed too. “Ella. I'm so sorry about the night when Derek... You know.” He frowned looking down. I shook my head. “No. It is not your fault. It was mine. I was being stupid.” I shrugged, then looked at him curiously as he took my hand in his, pulling me somewhere. “Its Jason. Come on.” He said as I realized he was pulling me away from Jason as he walked toward us. I felt a hand grab my arm, and pull me away from Bryce. “Hey!” I tried to jerk my arm away from Jason's grip. He pulled me to him, hugging me to his chest. “Ella... Your alive... I was so worried...” He said as he went to kiss me. I jerked away and stood next to Bryce as he pushed me behind him. “Stay away from her. Your the whole reason she was even hurt.” He snarled, which scared me a little. Jason laughed, shaking his head and walking away. After Bryce knew Jason was gone, he took me into his arms. “Hey... Are you okay?” He said, after seeing my slightly paled face. I shook my head. What he didn't know was that I was looking straight at the sneering face of Derek.
Bryce turned around, his eyes surprisingly a reddish that swirled around the blue. He stared at Derek, then took my hand in his, pulling me outside, away from the school. “Come on. We are skipping school today.” He said as he was pulling me by my hand. I shook my head, stopping. “We could get suspended and my dad would kill me!” I crossed my arms, planting my feet firmly on the ground, when all of a sudden, he picked me up, throwing me over his shoulder. “Hey!” I shouted, not knowing where he was going. “Ella. Please! Trust me.” He said, as he sat me down, and I finally could get a good look at where we were. He had taken me to an old cabin in the forest, covered in vines that climbed its old dusty walls. I looked around. “What are we doing here, Bryce?” I said as took my arm, pulling me into the cabin. “Bryce, I want to leave here. Take me back. Or, or I’ll walk back.” I crossed my arms in protest, not moving an inch. “Ella.” He turned toward me, letting my arm go. “We need to go.” He shook his head in frustration as I didn’t move. He then picked me up again, carrying me like a princess. “Hey! I said stop!” I squirmed, not being able to get out of his arms. I gave up, wondering where he was taking me. He walked into the cabin, then I knew something was wrong. “Bryce. I feel weird. Let me go. I don’t feel right.” I cowered into his arms. He held me close and I could feel the warmth of his chest on my cheek. “This is the burial place of many witches.” He walked out of the cabin, to the river. He sat me down on a rock beside the river, standing in front of me. “Ella. I need to get you away from here. Derek and Jason will not stop until you are dead or theirs. I don’t want to see you hurt.” I looked at his eyes, softening at the longing look in his eyes. I smiled, putting a hand on his cheek. “I love you Bryce…” I looked at him, closing my eyes as he leaned in and his cool lips closed in on mine. He kissed me gently, and I could feel him smiling a bit. I smiled too as I felt my heart flutter. He pulled away softly, and took my hand. “I can hear them… They’re coming. Let’s go.” He lead me deeper into the woods. I closed my eyes, thinking of the place I wanted to go, then made it real. I opened my eyes to the sound of honking horns and police sirens. We had made it from my small state of North Carolina, to the big NYC. Bryce looked at me, clearly amazed. I smiled. “Years of practice.” I joked and he laughed. I took his hand, leading him into an alley, where we wouldn’t be seen by anyone. “I’ve only been here once before...” I shrugged. Then he nodded. “I’ve been here many times.” He said matter of fact. I was a bit confused, but smiled back. “1872, 1896, 1914, 1943, 1970.” He laughed. I raised an eyebrow. “So by immortal, Samantha litterally meant immortal. You live forever.” I smiled as he nodded. I was surprised and amazed. How could someone live forever? Then again, how can someone teleport from North Carolina to New York in just a couple seconds. We explored New York, for so long. It seemed as if I had been there for years. But I knew I had only been there for a couple days. My dad would just have to do without me. I can't put him in any more danger than I had... No more Ms. Nice girl.
