Chapter 2

Brynn dropped her overnight bag in her host’s car. Part of the retreat was staying at some stranger’s home the whole time, and Brynn was not happy about it. She wouldn’t even do sleepovers growing up, let alone be comfortable as a teen.

Tonight, Brynn would be going to bed early; she was feeling strange. Her throat felt thick and painful, not to mention she was getting tired already; at it was only 6 p.m.!

As Brynn was getting ready to climb into the car with her small group, Ashley’s shrill voice called her name.

“What’s up?” Brynn asked. Ashley handed Brynn her purse.

“Are you ok? You’re acting weird,” Ashley said. Brynn raised an eyebrow at her friend.

“I’m ok,” Brynn said. She turned back to the car and climbed in. She really didn’t want to talk to Ashley; things between them were falling apart. On the ride to the host’s house, Brynn started thinking about the past year. Her uncle had died of an overdose just a year ago, and the so-called “friends” at church started telling her that he was in hell; all because they didn’t know if he was a Christian or not. After Brynn snapped at one of the leaders, telling her to mind her own business, people left the subject alone. Brynn was officially a rebel; just for standing up for her family.

Before she knew it, Brynn felt the car stop. The sooner this stupid retreat was over, the better. She was tiring of the people around her. She climbed out of the car and walked into her host’s house with her bag.

When everyone was inside, the host stood in front of them. She opened her mouth for introductions.

“My name is Sarah, and you’ll be here til Sunday,” she said. Brynn groaned to herself in disbelief.

The next morning, Brynn got up early. She didn’t want to deal with the rush of girls that headed to the showers. The hot water felt good on her face and head. It relieved some of the ache that she had been feeling.

After her shower, Brynn headed downstairs towards the kitchen. A familiar scent passed through her nostrils, making her stomach growl. When she got to the kitchen, Brynn saw pancakes, her favourite. Her father used to make them for breakfast every Saturday. Naturally, she dug in.
