My bare feet trembled against the wet asphalt and an icy coat of rain clasped to my shivering body. I longed for the possibility of a retreat as the familiar headlights appeared a quarter mile away. I screamed as if a sound would actually escape my hoarse voice, but was shamed when it didn’t. Nothing I did now would stop that car as it sped along the slick road, and I'd known that. After one final glance to the gun barrel directed at me from the ditch, I saw the man’s hands tighten around the trigger. He didn’t trust that I’d stand still like he’d threatened me to, but, as he’d often been lately, he was wrong. I was going to die either way. I pinched my eyes together as the tires screeched and the gun fired.
