Prologue

Time seemed to suddenly stall. His lips touched mine and everything seemed to pause suddenly, life didn’t seem as bad as I thought I did, and the beating of his heart moved his shirt to where my eyes wandered on his chest. Nothing seemed impossible anymore, and the world seemed to relive its glory-filled years that will never quite be lived again. The challenging thought to why I was still around consumed his mind and I was able to tell instantly, because his heart began to beat even faster and I began to wonder why he was still with me, holding my arms so tight when I knew where he had to be.

The others looked at us, but the bond between us never broke, but I could feel the anticipation of everyone ready for the next stage; the stage where I couldn’t be of any use anymore. Deep in my heart I felt some jealousy towards him, but it didn’t last long, because I pictured life without him, and how the struggle to breathe would become harder by the second and would decline with every memory of him. I left his lips for a sudden inhalation of air, and his soft black hair tickled my sunburnt cheek. I knew I needed him for survival, and the smell of his blood left me speechless, wishing he never had to leave me again.

It was time for him to leave though, I could tell, and I didn’t want him pretending I couldn’t. I needed to show him I was strong, and that if anything happened to him then I could handle it, but the pang deep inside my chest yearned for him and wasn’t independent at all, I knew something inside needed his companionship more than anything in the universe. He pulled away, and the smell of his cigarettes lingered in the air and I grabbed ahold of his shirt pocket and pulled his lips to mine.

“Do not die. Adam, I swear to God. If you die, that’s it. That’s the end.” My voice cracked and his body shuddered, lips trembled and he kissed my lips again, never wanting them to part.

“I won’t die. I Promise.” His deep blue eyes studied every inch of my trembling body. He finally pulled away from me and one of the Elders pulled him into the crowd of soldiers. He glanced over his shoulder one more time to look at me with a melancholy look; a look like he knew the future.
