Chapter Five

I stared at him in disbelief and flipped to a fresh page of the notepad.

'Does it look like I'm covered in scales? Do I have wings and a tail? No.'

"You are a dragon cursed to human form until you make amends for whatever crime you committed. In your case, your crime must've been extremely severe if you have no memories and no voice." Eric explained. "Our kind is known as dragos, since we really aren't dragons anymore."

'Is Xavier a drago?'

"That's where things get complicated. Xavier wasn't born a dragon like us. He was born human with dragon abilities." Eric answered.

'So he isn't a drago.'

"He is, but he isn't. While he has our strength and speed, as well as a special ability of his own, he doesn't share our immortality. He has been trying to gain immortality ever since he discovered dragons and dragos existed." he continued explaining.

'And the man who attacked me? What was he?'

"You're just full of questions aren't you." he commented. I underlined my last message and cocked an eyebrow at Eric. He sighed and shook his head. "He was a demon."

'A demon? Like from Hell?'

"Look, Jaz has all kinds of information about us, demons, and Xavier in her library. Why don't you ask her to let you into the library and stop asking me these stupid questions." Eric said as if annoyed. I couldn't feel any annoyance coming from him, so I figured demons were a subject he didn't want to talk about.

'Who is Nate?' I knew I was taking a risk with this question, but I just had to know about the man who called Eric "brother". Eric took the notepad from me and ripped it apart. The intense anger returned and boiled just under his skin. I hesitantly put a hand on his arm. He stood and stepped away from the bench keeping his back to me. I watched as the anger was slowly hidden behind a wall of thick ice I couldn't get through. When he turned back around, his eyes were chips of ice that gave me the coldest glare I had ever seen.

"He is someone I don't want to talk about. Now do you have any more questions or can I tell Jaz that you have been fully informed?" he asked frostily. I could feel the ice in his voice brush against my skin. I shivered and pulled his jacket tighter around me. I heard footsteps running towards us. I turned my attention towards the door just as Salem busted through it.

"Eric! We need you in the club, now!" she said panting heavily.

"Why? Did Gar hit on the wrong girl again?" he snapped.

"No! Demon attack!" she rushed. Eric cursed under his breath and stalked towards the door. I stood and quickly followed. He turned on me.

"Stay here." he growled before continuing his walk into the hallway behind Salem. I looked at her.

"You better do as he says." She said. I shook my head and pushed past her to follow Eric. She moved to grab my arm, but I fixed her with an icy glare that matched the one Eric gave me but a moment ago. She shrank back against the wall and I took off down the hall following the sounds of fighting. The scene I came upon gave mass hysteria a whole new meaning. Club patrons were running in every direction trying to get away from hellish creatures that closely resembled dogs without fur. Eric was fighting these creatures off with a sword that I suspected was made of ice, while Gar just used his claws and teeth. Jaz was directing the club patrons to safety in the far corner. One of the creatures turned its gaze on me. Before it could make a move, Eric's sword sliced through its neck. I watched its head roll away before Eric grabbed my arm.

"I thought I told you to stay with Salem." he hissed. I turned to give him an icy glare of my own, but my gaze instead landed on one of the creatures sneaking up on Gar, who was helping a patron up off the floor. I grabbed Eric's sword and suddenly, the creature lay dead before me. Gar's eyebrows shot up.

"Thanks." he said before turning to dispatch more of the creatures. Eric took the sword from me, watching me wearily.

"Don't do that again." he said slowly. I rolled my eyes and turned to help Jaz, only to be grabbed by rough hands. Eric stepped forward to help, but a blade was pressed against my neck.

"Drop your weapon." A dark voice growled close to my ear. Eric reluctantly dropped his sword. I watched as it turned into a puddle of water. The chaos in the room slowed almost to a halt as Gar and Jaz realized I was being held hostage. A few of the dog like creatures surrounded Eric.

"You've made your point. What do you want?" Eric said glaring at whoever held the blade to my throat.

"The Zabytov. Give it to me now." The man growled. I leaned back away from the blade, but he held it tighter against my throat.

"We don't have it, you stupid demon. The Zabytov went missing over two thousand years ago." Eric hissed.

"You're lying! I know it's here. I can smell it." the demon snarled. Suddenly, Eric's eyes grew wide and he looked at Jaz. I saw her shake her head from the corner of my eye.

"Just let the girl go. The Zabytov isn't here." Jaz said drawing the demon's attention to her. I pulled the blade from the demon's grip and turned away from him. As he made a grab at me, I slammed the blade into his heart. I watched as him and the remaining dog creatures turned to dust.

"Damn..." Gar whistled. "You're my new hero, girly."

MrV

Miss Mystery has begun to show her true colors!

I couldn't help laughing as I pictured Gar looking at her wide-eyed as he said she was his hero.

So Miss Mystery is a dragos, which is a dragon cursed in human form. I like that, it explains why the only dragons we see in today's world are the Komodo and the Crocodile, they all turned into humans.

Who put the curse on them? A wizard?

So the dragons quarrel with demons and their hell hounds?
