Chapter oneCobalt Blue

A bluish cold filled the dimly lit train station, and the girl wearing a black raincoat leant back against the empty ticket booth. A tickle of water crept under the sealed doors; the soft sound of shuffled feet and murmuring seeming to rise and sink like the ebb of tide. The ear infection made everything sound as though it were underwater. She tipped head left then right, searching for improvement when she flinched at the sudden touch to her arm. The girl next to her whom the touch belonged to had wide pale eyes and soft ochre hair, and scared smile.

“Ophelia” she whispered “Lia”

“Moll” the girl, Ophelia, replied, pulling back her hood. Her hair was a dark crown of braids; she had cherry stain lips and thin hands which curled around Molly’s. “Are you okay?”

“Yeah, There was some talk about a rescue team getting here” Molly replied with a smile “so we might get out soon”

“Great” Ophelia sighed. Molly leant against the boot next to her, linking her fingers in Ophelia’s, and kissing the back of her hand.

“Home soon” she murmured. Molly’s voice was soft spoken and small and her hand felt warm. Ophelia smiled slightly, and squeezed her hand back. “Aarons getting coffee” Molly continued “They’ve started giving it out”

A picture of a dark amber haired boy with a smile that reflected a cynical sense of humour crossed Ophelia’s mind briefly “Is he getting us some?”

“I think so”

“Good” a vision of home, warm and safe came back to her. They ordered a Chinese takeout, her parents gone for the weekend, and Molly was there. She glanced down at the slightly smaller girl, who took and cigarette from her jean pocket and placed it between her teeth as she fumbled for the lighter. “Molly-”

She never finished her sentence. There was a girl, across the length of the station with a dark grey scarf around her neck; her eyes piercing cobalt blue, staring directly at her.

 “What is it?”

There was a sudden, blinding flash of light, a scalding hot whiteness that filled Ophelia’s eyes and lungs. She thought she tasted blood, the last thought before there was nothing.
