Chapter 1- She's my sister

It is cold. Exceptionally cold. I’m heavy. Very heavy. My weight cracks the thin ice and I sink down where the smooth light gray rocks are. I hold my breath. It seems like forever. Then I hear another crack. I see the back of her head, a mass of black swirls. I would cry but I can’t. I remember her laugh. I remember the way her eyes sparkled. They were blue. Bright blue. I stroke her face and curl up beside her waiting for when I cannot hold my breath any longer. That’s when I see it. Bubbles. Air bubbles.

I grab her arm and pull her towards the surface. I drag her unto the stronger ice. I see the headlights disappearing.

“I love you.” She whispers. “Keep your promise…”

“Help!” I scream, “Help me!”

Inside I know that nobody can hear. I know I never had a chance of saving her. But then I see the lights of a house and using an inner strength I grab her arms and pull her towards the lights. It seems like hours until I reach it. I knock. The man comes to the door. He looks scared.

“Please, she’s my sister.” I plead.

The lady comes. I hear the men whisper.

“I’m no doctor but I think she’s dead.”

“I’m so sorry, Addie. So sorry.”

Those were the last words I spoke.
