This morning I woke up and wanted to sleep forever. Well, not literally, but you know what I mean. I had a football game last night (we won of course, thanks to me) and was beat. But now I had school. It was the start of another semester (a third of the year is done) so some new classes. I got ready, wearing a grey T-shirt, Calvin Klein jeans, my boots, did my hair it’s usual, and brushed my teeth. My name’s Elliot Fairchild, I’m seventeen, I have dirty blond hair, brown eyes, and lightly tanned skin. I’m a senior at Los Angeles High School, thank God. I got in my car and drove to school.
“Hey, man! Hows it going?” I heard one of his friends, Matt say coming up behind him.
“Hey, not much.” I replied.
“Good game last night,” Matt continued.
“Yeah-” I stopped because I spotted a girl from across the parking lot. She was getting out of her car. She had pale blond hair and pale skin. She looks like a supermodel. So hot, so beautiful...
“Elliott? Elliott!” Matt was saying, trying to get my attention. I realized I was staring at the girl. But I couldn’t stop. She didn’t look like any of the other girls, she was so beautiful.
“Huh?” I dragged my gaze from the girl to Matt. “Oh, sorry. Uh, who’s that girl?” I asked.
Matt followed my gaze. “I don’t know. Haven’t seen her before. Guess she’s new.” Matt said, shrugging and starting to walk into the school. I went to look at her again, but she was gone. Where’d she go? I looked around the parking lot, but she was nowhere in sight. I guess she already went inside. I followed Matt inside, then starting looking for her there. No luck.
“So, I guess, I’ll see you later.” I said to Matt, heading to first period.
“Yeah,” he agreed, walking off.

I was at my locker, it was the end of the day and I just wanted to go home. I looked at my new schedule I got in first period. This was one of my new classes. Vocabulary? What the hell? I’m going to play football, not win the spelling bee. I slammed my locker shut, annoyed, and walked to my class. It was almost full, so I took the seat at the end. I looked around, seeing my new classmates. Few guy friends, few ex-girlfriends... oh. There she was. The girl from the parking lot. She was sitting at the front row, looking like an angel. Before long, I found myself staring. I jerked my gaze down.
“Okay guys.” The teacher, Coach Knightly said. “No free choice of the seats. Seating charts.” The class groaned. The girl just looked around. Probably wondering who she’ll get next to.
Five minutes later, I wound up second to last seat in the row, behind the girl. I learned her name was Janessa. Janessa Kohler. Sounded like an angel’s name.
“So. Today’s the first day.” Coach said. “Turn around, and get to know the person sitting behind you.”
Janessa turned around and met my eyes. I flashed her my heart-breaking smile that usually makes girls melt. She smiled back, one without teeth. Just polite. She turned around sideways, not the whole way.
“I’m Janessa,” she said.
“Elliott,” I said. I sounded bored.
She nodded. “Vocabulary, huh? Boring class.”
“Believe me, I wouldn’t be here if I didn’t have to be.” I said.
Her smile dropped. She probably thought I was talking about her. God, I was being rude without even trying to. “I mean, this class. I don’t remember signing up for this.”
“Well,” she said. “Sometimes you have to go through tough times to make it to the top.”
So she was smart. “Sounds like you know the feeling,” I said.
Her face kinda went sad. “You have no idea,” she muttered, looking down.
“Whats the story on you? I haven’t seen you around before,” I said, curious.
“I’m new.” she said slowly.
“Yeah, and?” I asked, when she didn’t say anything else.
“And... my parents died... a while back. I live... with my aunt.” Her eyes were avoiding mine.
“Did you just move here?” I asked.
She smiled, eyes amused. “You could say that” she said.
The bell rang. She jumped up and grabbed her bag. I got up too.
“Here,” I said, taking her hand. I got a red pen from my desk and scrawled my cell phone number on her hand. She looked up, surprised. “Call me.” I said. Her hand felt so warm.
“I... I’m busy,” she said.
What? Was she turning me down? No one turns me down. “Yeah, me too” I said, walking away.
He’s so full of himself! I can’t believe I’m his guardian angel! He’s an ass. Miya said someone’s trying to kill him though. So I have to watch him. I feel like such a stalker, watching him at home, following him while he hangs out with his friends. I can never get a break. What if someone kills him when I’m not looking? And he wants me to call him? ugh. No way is that happening. I will not date him. I will not date him. No matter how attractive he is, I will not date him.
“You have to date him!” Miya was telling me the next day.
“What?” I protested, shocked.
Miya licked her lips before continuing. “You could get closer to him.”
“But I don’t want to get closer to him,” I said. “He’s a total player.”
“It doesn’t matter,” she said quickly. “If you start dating him, you’ll be with him all the time. Then you could protect him without watching from the sidelines.”
I sighed. He was most likely going to end up breaking my heart, supposedly. But I didn’t care. Because no one breaks my heart. Anyway, it would just be pretend. For me.
“Fine,” I said, fluttering my eyes for a second. “I’ll date the asshole.”

Later that night, I decided to call Elliott.
“Hello?” he answered. He sounded bored. I think I heard a football playing on a TV.
“Hey, its.. Janessa” I said hesitantly.
I heard something squeak. Something he was sitting on? “Janessa?” he asked, sounding shocked.
“Hi,” I said.
“Hi,” he said back. “Um, I thought you were busy.”
“Well something came up. Wanna do something?”
“.. Yeah! I mean, sure, it doesn’t matter.”
“Well, will you come over, or...?”
“Yeah, I’ll be over in a few,” he said, hanging up.
Wait, how does he know where I live?
