Alisa woke with a start to find her bedroom awash with sunlight.
How long was I out?
She was spread out on the bed, above the covers. She must have abandoned the glass last night and started drinkingstraight from the bottle, because it was lying empty next to her.By the way her head was throbbing, she definitely downed the whole thing by herself.Evidently, her snores had been causing quite a ruckus as well, because Felix the not-so-wonder cat had taken refuge under her bed.
The first venture of the morning:to find what had startled her out of such a deep sleep. She reached for her cell phone that was still on the night stand next to her bed.
“One missed call.”
It was her friend Diana, whom she had been very close with in high school. And if she guessed right, the sound that had awakened her was the beep her phone made whenever someone left a message. In Diana’s case, a very long message. Her friend may have been endearing, but she was also long-winded.
Better see what she wants, Alisa thought. So she sat up and wrapped herself in a soft green blanket before pushing the voicemail button.
“Hi Ali!Diana here, but you know that, I’m sure!Just callin’ to check and see if you got your invite to Beth Ann’s wedding!Hope you’ll come home for it; I hear she has some cute single cousins!Maybe we can go shopping and get you a hot outfit or something! We need to bag you a man, girl!”
So Alisa’s mother had stretched out her web and caught Diana up in this “Get Alisa a Husband” crusade. That had to be it.Anyone who knew Beth Ann’s family would not willingly marry into it or suggest anyone else do the same.
Well, if her mother wanted to play hardball, then she would just have to deal with it.But first, she needed to make the room stop spinning.
