Ever since Mother died, my father hasn’t been much interested in me or my well being. With my dark brown-black hair and my grey eyes, I looked a lot like her, so every time he saw me I could just feel his hurt. He didn’t see me often, because he traveled for work about 40 weeks out of the year, but it still hurt knowing that my own father couldn’t bear to look at me. I knew he would try to get rid of me as soon as possible, but since I was only 16 I figured I didn’t have to worry about it for now.

Boy was I wrong.

Evelyn’s POV

“Evelyn. Evelyn. EVELYN!” One of my best friends, Marie, yelled while poking me.

“Hm? Oh, sorry, what?” I replied groggily after being so rudely awakened from my dream. Okay, so it wasn’t really a dream exactly, we were in school and I was standing up getting the books I needed for next period from my locker, but it still felt like a dream.

“She was looking at that new hottie,” Cate, my other bff, giggled.

“IwasnotIwasjusttryingto… uh…” I tried to think of an excuse hurriedly as I turned away from my locker to face them. Normally I was better at this, but sometimes there’s just no fooling your best friends.
“Trying to what? Imagine him-”Marie started to say with an evil smirk.
“NO! Gross, Marie! Why would you even say that?” I cut her off before she made me blush. My cheeks had always been really rosy, so most people couldn’t even tell when I blushed, but, once again, there’s no fooling your best friends.

“I didn’t say anything.” Marie winked at me. All of a sudden I heard my locker slam from behind me. I turned around again and there was that cute guy I had been staring at, right in front of me!

“Um, hi,” he said to me, obviously disturbed by my surprise, “Sorry, I didn’t mean to frighten you.” Goodness gracious, I thought to myself, his voice is so deep and amazing and...Oh gosh! Keep it together Evelyn, keep it together… don’t mess this one up!

“Oh, no problem…” I trailed off, my voice getting progressively more shaky. Oh wow, he’s smiling at me! His smile is amazing… Oh my gosh I’m such a dork! Pay attention to the conversation Evelyn you idiot!

“So, when I saw you staring at me I felt like I should come over and introduce myself. I’m Chance.” What the heck?!?! He saw me staring at him! At that I started to freak out, which was not made any better by Cate and Marie leaving me alone with him.
“Oh, Chance? That's a nice name. I have a second cousin named Chance… well, I mean, he’s my cousin’s cousin. Does that make him my second cousin?” Oh my gosh Evelyn, WHAT THE HECK ARE YOU DOING?!?! Chance just laughed. I liked his laugh. It was a real, and, let’s be honest, in high school that’s a rare thing.

“So, are you going to tell me your name?” He asked me politely.
“Oh, gosh, I’m so sorry! I totally forgot!” I said, blushing even more. I was sure not even my rosy cheeks were hiding it this time, which was a first. What is wrong with me today? Why does his opinion matter to me so much? I wondered. I've never been one to care much of anything about guys. “I’m Evelyn. Evelyn Lowe,” I said before I could forget again.

“Nice to meet you, Evelyn.” Chance replied politely. He really was a real gentleman, although I thought I saw his face change a little when I told him my name… but only my last name. Who was I kidding, he recognized it. He probably hadn’t been in town for long, but you can’t be here for more than a few hours before you hear my dad’s name. Even though he’s away almost all the time, my dad owns this town. He’s by far the richest and most powerful person in town, and he’s almost everyone’s landlord. He's pretty much the Mafia Boss around here.
“Listen, I’m new here, so would you be willing to show me around town sometime?” Chance asked me, and just like that all my doubts flew away.

“Yeah, sure, I’d love to!” I answered a little too fast, which made Chance smile.
“Great! How ‘bout after school on Friday?”
“Sounds good! See you Chance!” He waved goodbye as I walked away. I immediately got a text, so I took out my phone to see who it was from. Dad. I was about to read it when-

“Oof!” “Oh my gosh I’m so sorry!” “Hey watch it!” “Sorry!” “Hey!” “Ouch!” “-Oog”

“Evie are you okay?” Marie asked me, while trying not to laugh at me once I finally got out from the crowd of people I'd been stepping on.

“Ugh Marie, glad to see you came back.” She frowned at this.

“We were just trying to give you two some alone time!” She said, feigning hurt. “Did it not go well?”

“I don’t really want to talk about it. But, hey, I just remembered, he asked me out!” I nearly squealed.

“What?!?!?!” Marie said, not even trying to suppress her squeal. “Just wait until Cate hears about this!” I giggled at the thought of Cate’s face as Marie went to go find her. Then I suddenly remembered about the text message. It read:

“Evelyn, come straight home after school and start getting ready as soon as you get home. We’re having very important company and I want you to be on your best behavior.”

I gulped.

Dad never made me sit with company. In fact, even if I wanted to he hadn’t let me since Mom died 3 years ago when I was 13.

So what was so different about these people?

altEvelyn- 16 (Yep, it's Ginnifer Goodwin)
