For the Lovers
We were for each other the moment
you and I awakened to the sound of the birds
singing high up in the trees, our legs tangled
together and your skin pressed to mine
as the sun blew its last kiss to the sky before
disappearing under the horizon. And then you looked at me,
entirely magnificent in your baggy clothes and tired eyes
like some sort of miracle sitting around
With one eye open, a corner of your mouth turned up,
then I could swear the stars aligned,
if I cared at all for astronomy.
And there it was in my head,
all of the things I wanted to say but could not put
into words, all of the places I wanted to touch you
but could not muster up the courage to;
then all of the days I wanted to spend waking
in this same situation, the birds racing to meet the
sunset, my skin whispering across yours,
David Bowie crooning from my beat-up old boombox.
Out on your front yard, waiting patiently for nightfall
is where I knew I loved you and always would,
fiercely and ceaselessly.
