Ishould've known the tides were getting higher. We can still survive. They think we're drowning but our heads are still above the waves, Above the waves~Asking Alexandria
I held a finger to her lips, silencing my sister as she sobbed, they died down, but not by much, and she continued to whimper, and shook from the physical pain the cold had brought. Her blonde hair in a mus, and her yellow eyes reflecting the fires, glistening with unshed tears.
All around us a battle was happening in slow motion, fires were flickering and people were staggering around, clutching wounds, clutching friends, clutching family.
It was early morning when the wolves had come.
Abrupt as a flash, our mother was murdered, her head tumbling from her shoulders as a wolf sunk his teeth into the soft, unprotected flesh of her throat.
At least she never knew what hit her.
What hit our big brother was a wolves claw, gutting him in one quick swipe, making him fall to the ground, gargling blood as it dribbled from his mouth like a gentle stream.
What hit my best friend was a tail.
But she fell back onto a sword one of the men was brandishing as he tried to save her, the blade protruding from her breast, her mouth open in a silent scream of agony and shock. Her violet eyes wide.
Everyone was falling like flies around us, and all we could do was hunker and hide.
I felt a strong hand grip my upper arm and I turned, growling, my little fists tightly clenched, ready to defend my younger sister at all costs, to see my father look down at me. His moss green eyes, so like my own, glaring down at me.
"Come Children" His deep voice uttered, barely travelling to us over the noise and he dragged us from the little hole we had buried ourselves in.
"No Daddy No" My little voice whined, pulling back from him, trying to grab Nano, the grass, anything to stop me from being taken away from my current place of safety.
"Now" he roared, I would have cowered at the attention that would normally have brought us, but it didn't bother me, everyone was to caught up in their own little world of pain and suffering.
I grabbed my little sister's hand, her cheeks wet with the tears she'd finally shed, and ran into the darkness, hearing the screams that would haunt me for the rest of my life snapping at my heels.
I doused my hot and sweating face with cold water, looking into the mirror at my blood shot and heavily shadowed eyes.
I had got very little sleep in the last six years.
Ever since that fateful night.
I ambled downstairs and saw Nano perched contently at the kitchen table, playing with the beads that I'd bought her the other day. Her ten year old self was very easily distracted.
Unlike myself. Being 13, I had to be the grown up. I walked through the kitchen, giving my little sister's head a brief rub, musing her hair, ignoring her cries of "Hey" with a big grin.
My smile fell when I walked into the living room and took the empty beer bottle from my fathers hand. He'd drunk himself senseless every night since mum had died.
And I knew absolutely nothing when it came to helping him, no matter what I did, I couldn't do about it.
I dragged the heavy woollen blanket over him and kissed him on the forehead, hoping for change. Wishing with my heart and soul.
Little did I know change was going to come, just not for the better.
