By the time I had gotten home, I'd managed to calm myself down enough to appear normal to my family. Lucas was working on his truck, so I really only saw his legs. He slid out from under the truck's engine, startling me.

"Jesus Christ Luke!" I cursed. "You scared the shit out of me!"

He wiped his forehead with one of his oily hands, leaving a black smear. "Someone’s a little edgy," he observed. There were just some things that couldn’t get past him.

"Shut up," I growled, leaving him behind as I made my way around the house to the back porch. Jane was sprawled out on the living room floor, school supplies scattered around her. She waved to me, motioning for me to come inside.

So I did.

"Okay, here’s your schedule," she said, reaching up to give me the white slip of paper.

"Gym?" I asked skeptically.

"It was that or choral," she replied, turning the page of one of her magazines.

"Are you saying I’m a bad singer?" I joked.

"Oh, yeah Dustin. You’re terrible," she answered, mimicking my tone.

"So what did Luke choose?" I asked, I couldn’t imagine him singing...it just wasn’t something he’d do.

"He’s in small engine repair, or something like that."

I sighed. "And I couldn’t have--"

"It doesn’t fit into your schedule okay?" Jane got to her feet. "Come on, I’m thirsty and I know the two of you didn’t get enough blood last time. You were probably to busy fooling around and fighting."

I shrugged and followed her out onto the back porch and into the garage so we could get Lucas.

* * *

I never did hunt well when I had something on my mind, or something that bothered me. So this hunt didn’t go well. I got enough to fill, but not enough to last the week.

"Come on Luke, let’s go get ready," Jane called out over her shoulder as she ran up the steps.

Lucas followed her without hesitation, leaving me behind.

I sighed and trudged up the stairs and into my bathroom, opening the sliding glass shower door and turning the heat all the way up.Once I had stripped down, Iput my slightly bloody clothes in the hamper and walked into the shower. Steam rose up from my stone cold body, but like always, it did not warm me.

I washed any, and every, sign of blood from my body thoroughly, making sure even I couldn’t smell any animal blood. Chasity’s scent, however, was an entirely different story. My skin had seemed to soak in her scent...permanently.

I wasn’t going to allow Elijah--or his coven--to take her away from me. I had to protect her, at all costs. Even if it meant killing him.

Just the thought of killing another vampire made my skin crawl and the venom rise in my throat. The monster in me raged, enjoying how I suddenly felt the need to kill Elijah.

Even if it is for Chasity’s safety, I still shouldn’t. I told myself, as I let my head rest against the shower’s wall, in defeat. I couldn’t let the monster get to me, especially if I wanted to be close to Chasity. I would be the biggest threat to her, and I didn’t want that.

I was my own person, and I refused be run by an animal.

I slammed my hand down on the knob that controlled the heat angrily, and turned off the water completely.

Nearly ripping the towel, I wrapped it around my lower half after drying off.

Your own person. I reminded myself.

I glanced at the time on the tiny clock on my dresser: 7:26 AM.

"Dustin!" I heard Jane yell.

I slid on a pair of boxers, dark jeans, a black T-shirt and a hoodie--thehoodiemostly for show--as I rushed back to the bathroom. I raked a brush through my hair quickly, then dashed out of my bathroom and bedroom.

Jane waited on the bottom of the stair case, my school bag dangling from her fingertips.

"Bye," she grumbled.

I skidded to a halt and turned and pecked her on her cheek. "Bye."

Lucas rolled his eyes. "See you at school."

I nodded, swinging my back pack over my shoulder as I left the house.

When I got into the Blade Master the dashboard read 7:27.

Only three minutes left.

I pushed my foot down all the way on the gas pedal, and the car lurched forward. There was no way I’d make it on time. I mean really, I only had three minutes to not only enter town, but drive all the way through it?

But I didn’t slow down, if anything, I sped up.

My phone buzzed, but I ignored the text message, deciding to concentrate on the task at hand.
