“This is it” I though “the pinnacle point in my life lies just beyond that door.” It looked so daunting, and much larger than when I had seen it last, even as a small boy it never seemed this large to me. I reached out my hand. My fingers tingled at the touch of the door nob. It was as cold as ice.

As I turned it, slowly the wood creaked and the door began to become more weighted. It was being blown by the blustering winter winds outside. “This is it” the words rang like a church bell in my head. “The defining moment, boy to man.”

I looked up out of the door's window. It was impossible to make anything out through the glass, yet still I tried to glimpse it before I opened the door fully but nerves got the better of me and I let go of the door.

“Darren,” My brother said “you need to do this” I didn't look but in my mind he was shaking his head with disappointment. I know the work he put into making me what I am now. I just couldn't let him down, not ever.

I grasped the door nob again, firmly, so my knuckles went white. In my left hand the knife he gave me on my birthday felt warm, like someone holding my hand. “Uhhh” I sighed. “Do it!” I thought, “On the count of three... One... Two … Three!”

I burst out the door like a mad man. Into the harsh frozen garden. The wind hit my face like a brick forcing me to blink. In the split millisecond I had my eyes shut the creature moved. “where is it I said” Looking back to the door. It was shut. Two figures standing the other side. I knew he couldn't help me. It was stupid to let my guard down like that with the creature out there.

It's fangs, sharp as fish hooks, pieced the muscular flesh around my neck. I felt it sucking my blood! The more it drank the weaker I became. I was unable to think within mere seconds of it biting. All my muscles had stopped working. The knife slipped from my hands.

“I've had it” I thought but then I remembered what my brother taught me. I shut my eyes and let my mind settle. Then I filled it with the loving image of my crush Helen Porter. She filled my with warmth every time I though of her. Next I imagined Montey Harx, my arch enemy, my bully, my good for nothing cousin, kissing her and holding her breast.

Beating madly, like the pistons in a car, my heart shot adrenalin through my veins. Thump, thump, thump, thump. I heard in my ears. The creature spat out my blood. The taste was too sour. He took only two seconds to wipe the blood from his mouth. Two seconds was all I needed.

At the same time I tilted my body forward until my shoulder was level to my knee, picked up the knife and kicked the creature square in the Adam’s apple. It flew back, it's feet leaving the ground before landing painfully in a thorn bush. It screeched and wailed as it thrashed around trying to get free. The blade I had in my hand was made from nothing but silver, even the handle.

I spun my body round creating lots of momentum. Extending my fingers I let the knife drop. Then pinched the blade between my index finger and thumb. My life up to now had been training me for this, I knew I'd never miss this easy shot! Hurtling the knife at it with a grin on my face, the blood that dripped down my neck splattered on the house's walls and I didn't care. The hand crafted blade turned the Vampire to burning sinders as soon as it's diamond sharp point broke it's flesh.

I was warmed by the ashes, physically and also in the knowledge that I had passed my final test and could now become the next grate LeCrain demon hunter!

I find this interesting and wanted to read more, but sadly got a bit lost in the second chapter. I like the concept of bitter blood and am curious to hear what challenges await the demon hunter.
