Chapter 1

I met him on a sheer coincidence. I met him thinking he was a jerk, and there he goes singing one of my favorite rock songs of all time.

I think I should start at the beginning.

“Halie. You should totally come with me the karaoke place!” Brooke screamed.

“No, I don’t really feel like it.” I said quietly. I always loved music. I danced around my room singing songs that sometimes I didn’t know the words to. But I had horrible stage fright, and sometimes, it would consume me.

“Come on, when was the last time you sang up on a stage?”

“Fourth grade. I almost threw up over the whole front row.” I said and she smirked at me.

“Alright you got me there, but you have to sing. You just have too!” She wined.

“Alright! If it would get you to shut up I’ll do it!” I screamed. Little did I know at the time, the guy I would soon meet was making the exact same plans.

“Come on dude. You have a sick killer voice you have to sing your favorite song on stage.” Casey said to me over the phone.

“Whatever. I’m not singing at some stupid karaoke place.”

“Shane, don’t be such a puss.”

“Alright fine! If it would get you out of my hair.” I yelled into the phone.

We had reserved a time at six o’clock. It was three and I was already starting to get my first wind of stage fright.

Brooke tried to calm me down, “Halie, you’re going to do fine. Stop second guessing yourself.” I nodded my head and that made my lightheadedness go away a little.

“Bring yourself down to Earth.” My mom always said to me. She was a tour girl. She would sing on stage with her guitar and just silence a crowd. No one dared to talk while my mom sang. It was quite amazing.

Three hours later it was my turn to preform. I took a deep breath and brought myself down to Earth. I decided to pick my mom’s favorite song. Mean by Taylor Swift.

“What’s your name sweetie?” The DJ asked me.

“Halie. Halie Johnson.”

“Alright and what are you going to be singing us?”

“Mean by Taylor Swift.”

“Alright, here you go sweetie.”

I started singing and instantly the whole room started to get quiet.

You, with your words like knives and swords and weapons that you use against me

You have knocked me off my feet again got me feeling like I’m nothing

You, with your voice like nails on a chalkboard, calling me out when I’m wounded

You, pickin’ on the weaker man.

Well, you can take me down with just one single blow,

But you don’t know what you don’t know,

Someday I’ll be living in a big old city,

And all you’re ever going to be is mean.

Someday I’ll be big enough so you can’t hit me,

And all you’re going to be is mean.

Why you gotta be so mean?

As I started the next line everyone was clapping along, except one person. A guy in the corner leaning up against the wall. I grabbed the microphone and went out into the crowd and walked up to him. His frown slowly started to curl upward.

You, with your switching sides and your walk-by lies and your humiliation

You, have pointed out my flaws again as if I don't already see them

I walk with my head down trying to block you out 'cause I'll never impress you

I just wanna feel okay again

I'll bet you got pushed around, somebody made you cold

But the cycle ends right now 'cause you can't lead me down that road

And you don't know what you don't know.

Someday I'll be living in a big old city

And all you're ever gonna be is mean

Someday I'll be big enough so you can't hit me

And all you're ever gonna be is mean

Why you gotta be so mean?

But all you are is mean

All you are is mean and a liar and pathetic and alone in life

And mean, and mean, and mean, and mean

And I finished the song and I got standing ovation.

I smiled and went off the stage.

The guy got off the wall and he smirked at me and got on stage.

“Hey what’s your name?”

“Alright Shane. What are you going to sing for us?”

“Kryptonite by Three Doors Down.”

“Alright here we go.”

I knew every word to this song. It was one of my favorite rock songs of all time.

Well I took a walk around the world to ease my troubled mind

I left my body lying somewhere in the sands of time

But I watched the world float to the dark side of the moon

I feel there is nothing I can do, yeah

He took the mic and started walked around on stage.

I watched the world float to the dark side of the moon

After all I knew it had to be something to do with you

I really don't mind what happens now and then

As long as you'll be my friend at the end

And if I go crazy then will you still call me Superman?

If I'm alive and well, will you be there holding my hand?

I'll keep you by my side with my superhuman might

You call me strong, you call me weak

But still your secrets I will keep

You took for granted all the times

I never let you down

You stumbled in and bumped your head

If not for me then you'd be dead

I picked you up and put you back on solid ground

If I go crazy then will you still call me Superman?

If I'm alive and well, will you be there holding my hand

I'll keep you by my side with my superhuman might

He jumped down off the stage, and I was sitting down at the time. He moved my chair out from the table and sang to me.

If I go crazy then will you still call me Superman?

If I'm alive and well, will you be there holding my hand?

I'll keep you by my side with my superhuman might

Kryptonite, yeah

When he said “Yeah” he lifted up the mic and I was breathing hard. It was surreal. He jumped back on the stage and started singing.

I wasn’t really sure what just happening. Brooke looked at me with a “what the heIl just happened look?” and I shrugged and pushed my chair back in and watched intently as he finished.

After the whole thing was over, they still needed to crown a king and queen of karaoke.

“Alright, so we had some talented singers here tonight, but there were two, that really stood out. You guys agree?”

Everyone started cheering and applauding.

“Cool guys! So, here we go.”

There was a drum roll and he said, “Halie and Shane!”

Everyone applauded as I walked up and I was kind of shy.

“Shy?” The guy named Shane said.

“Little bit.” I said with a chuckle.

He laughed along with me as they crowned both of us. Little did I know is that I would soon meet him again.
