The van shook as its diesel engine started.

We drove off slowly.

I grabbed the phone and pressed the on button again.  I could immediately see two bars appear, letting me know I had reception.  Please please help me I mentally said, momentarily finding some faith in a higher power.

I started typing the imprinted digits of my home phone number I had rang so often, then paused staring at the number.  I wanted so much to tell Alison I loved her.  I clicked the red stop button, shuddering that I had even considered doing this.  It would have been indulgent and selfish to endanger Alison by speaking to her.

I dialled the only name on the phone again.  My heart missed a beat when I heard a ringing sound.  I hoped with all my heart someone would answer.

Suddenly it stopped ringing and went silent before I heard an unmistakable ‘Hell-l-l-o.’

‘Kirk.  This is Rob I need you to listen’ I shouted in a whisper down the phone.  ‘I am being driven back right now from the Assembly, to the place where the helicopter crashed, we left 5 minutes ago, they are looking for gold bars I told them I have hidden.  Can you ..’

I heard a beep sound, then the phone went dead.  I tried to power on again but it only lit up for a millisecond then died again.  There was nothing more I could do.  I had given myself a small chance to live if Kirk could somehow help me.

But surely Kirk is dead? I thought.
