Half an hour after everyone had gone to bed I gently lifted the set of keys and Kirk’s smart phone from the kitchen table. I hoped on my crutch quietly to the door. I opened it slowly and stepped outside leaning carefully on my crutch. I clicked the fob to open the driver door of the car. I threw my crutches into the back and manoeuvred myself into my seat and gently closed the door. I gingerly pushed the clutch in with the side of my left foot and put the car into reverse before turning the key. First one click and then another.
Suddenly the door to the caravan burst open and Kirk came running towards the car. I turned the key again, the engine chugged before starting. I released the handbrake quickly and lifted my foot from the clutch as I reversed fast towards the road. Kirk tried to grab the handle on the passenger side door as I sped past him.
Out on the road I put the car into first gear and took off, looking in the mirror briefly to see Kirk running in the distance towards me.
When I had driven a few miles I pulled into a layby and pulled out Kirk’s phone.
I clicked on the map application and typed in Green Leaf Forest. A group of pins appeared on the green map. I pinched the map to make it smaller. It had 2 large lakes within it. I remembered the map I had looked at with the helicopter pilot from James farmhouse to Sumerton House. There was only one lake that could be the one I was looking for. It was on the east side of the forest. I scrolled across to find the nearest road and set that as my destination. The map application said I was 1 hour 50 minutes away.
