'Call me back when you all decide you want to be a family.'
When I was young, my dad taught me something special and something that kind of stuck with me for the rest of my life. Although money can’t buy everything, having no money can’t buy you anything. If I had to put it out straight, I am rich. I have two cars, one apartment and perhaps a house full of clothes.
You will probably call me greedy, but I’m not happy. I may have the world at my feet, but I hate my life.
‘Nina, come down here for dinner.’ My maid called from downstairs and I groaned as I realized the day I hated was here. Sunday, or what other people say is ‘Family Day’. Oh the joy, I thought as I saved the draft of my blog and threw on a thin cardigan, before I made my way down to the dinner table.
I smiled weakly at my brother, who was sucking his girlfriend’s face off. My other sister, who was busy reading her report of Aerodynamics. I choked down another groan as I sat at the table, ‘Hey Dad.’
My dad, which sat the very end of the table, raised his hand as he took a call, ‘No – the meeting should be held tomorrow, not next week. I don’t care! I need them to comply within the week, not in two weeks. Thank you, and please tell the finance department that I want to speak to them in the morning.’
I’m good thanks Dad, I thought as everyone managed to remember we were a family and sat down together. My brother wrapped his arm around his girlfriend’s waist, and I wanted to slap him across the face. I wondered how long this chick would last for, a week, or a world record of a month. I looked back at my sister, Samantha, who was cleaning her glasses.
My mum finally walked out of the kitchen and smiled as she sat down, ‘Well everyone, how are you all? Samantha, put your report away!’ Samantha pouted as she finished her sentence before she placed it on her lap. I scoffed as my dinner was placed in front of me, which consisted of vegetables, meat and a little sauce.
‘I can’t eat this.’ I said simply and my mum rolled her eyes.
‘Nina, not now.’ She said as she pushed the dish in front of my face, ‘Everyone’s tired, so do us a favour and eat your food.’ I know, she was being a good mother, but it was only because I was admitted to hospital for an eating disorder that made her actually concerned.
I rolled my eyes and slammed my hand on the table as I rose from the table, ‘I’m vegetarian, if you didn’t know.’
My dad took another call and I was ordered to be silent, I sat back down and waited patiently until he hung up and continued his dinner, ‘really dad, you have nothing to say, or to ask?’
He coughed and wiped his mouth with a napkin, and looked me straight in the eyes, ‘How are you Nina?’
I clapped slowly and everyone looked up. Disappointment, he knew nothing about disappointment, ‘Thank you, you finally showed some fatherly skills.’
My brother and his girlfriend looked away while Samantha took out her report again. I groaned and scoffed, before my father spoke, ‘Do not talk to me like that, I treat you with respect and I expect you to do –.’
I clapped my hands, ‘Wow, respect. Amazing, so amazing. What is respect to you dad, sleeping with other woman while mum waits for you at home.’ My mum put her hand on my arm, so I fired at her, ‘and you mum, turning the other way while Dad whores himself out. Look at your children, they’re so disgusted that they pretend they can’t see shit.’
‘So excuse me, but please call me when you all,’ I said, and pointed to everyone that sat at the dinner table, ‘decide to be a family.’
I rose from my seat and took a bow before I headed to my room. They wouldn’t care, just another person missing from the table, it’s nothing they’ve never seen before. I flipped over to my phone and noticed a few text messages, before I decided to pack up my stuff.
People say that it takes a while to decide to run away, but I decided right now would be perfect. I’ve actually contemplated on this for a long time and finally, I thought I should act on it. I opened my wardrobe and took out some clothes, nothing special, just something to get me by and threw my laptop into the bag as well.
I heard the sound of our maid washing the dishes and I knew everyone would be back to their world. I flung my bag over my shoulder and made my way down the stairs. No one in this house would miss me, no one would be here to remind them of how unhappy they are, I said as I stopped in front of Samantha’s room, ‘Hey,’ I said as I opened the door.
My sixteen year old sister looked up from her laptop and smiled weakly, before she noticed my bag of clothes, ‘You’re leaving right? I guess there’s no point stopping you.’
‘That, you’re right about.’ I said before I began to shut the door before I stopped again, ‘Hey Samantha, do look up from your book. There’s a whole world out there for you, you just have to search for it.’
I shut the door before she could open her mouth, and made my way to the hallway. It was dark as everyone had disappeared, and it made me realize that this was never a home to begin with, it was just a place where people could sleep.
Sighing deeply, I opened the door to the mansion, where all the money and status came from, and never looked back.
Money can definitely buy you happiness, there is no doubt it that. That’s because humans are naturally greedy. We believe in materialistic things, and that they have the ability to make us happy because we ourselves, don’t have the courage to find out the truth. We would rather bury ourselves in a grave and wither away, than to own up to the fact that through superiority, we are inferior.
Author's Note: Hey, first chapter of another novel! It was more of a random splurge of an idea that I had wanted to develop for a long time and I hope you enjoy. First Question of this novel: Do you agree with Nina's blog post about money, do you think that she's greedy?
