They wanted to run tests on me, but the thought of being some human guinea pig didn’t sit right with me. They just took a sample of my blood and left it at that. I roamed the underground bunker with Kyra. David and Ariana were both still sleep. It was early in the morning. We both took an elevator that led to the roof of this underground bunker. We were five thousand feet beneath the earth’s surface and the elevator brought up to the surface in less than five minutes. When we left the elevator, we stepped on the gravel infested floor, smiling at the pale blue sky. The sunrise was beautiful. But it was also an eye opener. Hordes and hordes of zombies were surrounding the place. They knew we were here. I narrowed my eyes as the cold, crisp air blew. “This is all too familiar.” I said softly.

“What do you mean?” Kyra asked.

“Have you ever seen any of the Resident Evil movies?” She shook her head. “Well, in the third installment of a franchise that was butchered by bad acting and predictable, lazy writing, they were in the middle of a desert surrounded by zombies. Legit. And we happen to be surrounded by zombies.”

“But we aren’t in a desert.” She pointed out. The sunshine illuminated the outside. She’s right. We weren’t in a desert. Just a forest chockfull of trees. We were surrounded by trees and zombies. Looking farther ahead of me, I can see rapid movement in the trees. I don’t know what it was, but it didn’t look good. I’ll ignore it for now.

“You’re right. But we might as well be.”

“Riker, I wonder what’ll happen to us once we find the cure.”

“They find the cure. They cure everything. And we all go back to our lives.”

“I don’t know about mine. I mean, my parents are dead.” Wow. That was such a mood killer. Okay, I have to say something encouraging.

“Well, I’m pretty sure that it only affected our area. I haven’t heard word that it affected anywhere else. You have any family outside of here?”

“My aunt.”

“See, there you go." I replied happily.

"But she's dead. Probably.

"Well, aren't you just a ray of fucking sunshine." She smiled and walked back towards the elevator. I however stayed for a few more minutes. I walked to the edge of the building and looked down as the zombies reached for me, growling and snarling while they did it. We were five stories up and they had no way of getting inside. And it’s amazing how I got here with little to no effort on my part. Oh well. What needs to be down now is this cure and we’ll be fine and everything will be back to normal. For the most part.

I may have mentioned that the zombies killed her parents in the earlier chapters that featured her. I am not sure.
