Guilty Rose Chapter 17
“So, what’s your excuse for running into us today, Kyle?” Mel asked Kyle, glaring at him. I rolled my eyes and Cain smiled knowingly.
“I could ask you the same thing!” he countered as the waitress handed us our starters. Somehow, the four of us-Cain, Kyle, Mel, and I- were now sitting at the same table. I stared at my salad as the two of them continued to bicker.
Mel pointed her butter knife at Kyle and they fought like children over something small.
“How’s your Caesar salad, Arisa?” Cain asked me, waving his spoon in the direction of my plate.
“It probably tastes better than your French onion soup, Cain,” I bragged jokingly. He smirked knowingly.
“Oh, really? I’ll have to see for myself!” Cain exclaimed. Before I knew it, he had snatched my fork and ate the romaine from it. I was dumbfounded.
“Oh, I see what going on here...” Mel laughed evilly. “Indirect kiss!”
My jaw dropped. The tip of my ears turned red first then my cheeks. W-what is she saying about indirect kisses?
“Arisa and Cain, sitting in a tree. K-I-S-S-I-N-G!!!!” Mel sang happily. She giggled like a kid.
“S-shut up!!! Mel, you are so gonna get it later!” I screamed at her but my voice was drowned out by the roar of chatter around us.
“You are such a kid. Grow up, will ya?” Kyle scoffed, staring at his food intently. I wonder what had gotten into him; he was having fun until a little bit ago.
We finished dinner with bickering and laughter but somehow, I felt Kyle was kind of down. I want to find out why!!! It’s bothering me so much; I almost couldn’t eat my favourite dinner.
“Bye bye, Arisa, see you tomorrow at school!” Mel yelled at me, waving her arms in a bye motion. Cain smiled and dragged her back home since they lived near each other. Kyle was walking me home because, well, he’s my neighbor.
“Kyle, what’s wrong? You seem down today,” I asked him when we were about halfway home. I looked up at him as he looked down at me, his green eyes glowing in the lights of downtown Toronto. I was speechless as I gawked at him and his silky hair. I never noticed that he was handsome or cute until this very moment.
“Nothing much but, I’m afraid of something,” Kyle admitted.
“Afraid of what?” I prodded him.
“I’m afraid that you might fall in love with me right now,” he concluded, flicking his hair to the side. My jaw dropped. He chuckled a little bit as he ran his hands through his hair. He then mumbled lowly; “Not that I would mind.”
“Excuse me? I think you just said that you didn’t mind me falling in love with you. You are so funny, Kyle!” I laughed, my heart thumping to hear his response. This couldn’t be. It’s not possible. Or is it?
“I don’t mind you falling in love with me because...” He said louder this time but pausing at the end.
“Because... what?” I asked, now truly afraid of what his response would be. My shoulders shook with the suspense.
My suspicions were confirmed as he swept me into a hug, burying his head into my shoulder.
“It’s because I fell in love with you, Arisa. I fell in love with your witty humour, your sense of fashion, your personality, your ability to care for anyone but you. I love you, Arisa Rune, so much it hurts,” Kyle said in my ear.
We were now just two people in the universe in this small moment where... I was being loved.
