Wedding Planning

"I want to get married on the beach." I told her one night in bed, while looking through wedding catalogs. She was editing some photos on her laptop for her job and was half paying attention to what I was saying.

"That's fine, Dev." She said without even looking up from her computer screen.

I watched her. Her fingers danced around the keyboard. Her eyes narrowed and focused on her work. Her lip half in her mouth. She was so beautiful. I didn't even think she realized how focused I was on her. And I didn't realize how long I was watching. I just loved how she was so passionate about what she does. I put the catalog down and turned on my side, just to watch her better.

Usually in the night I'll be passed out by now and she'll be quietly working on her laptop or singing to herself, while I'd be in my third dream of the night. My line of work takes a toll on my energy and as soon as I hit the pillow and I know that she's right next to me, I'm usually out like a light. But on nights like these when I have my energy and I can enjoy lying in bed with my lovely fiancée, I cherish it. This is how I want it to be for the rest of our lives. Yes we'll have our differences. Yes we'll drive each other up the roof. But at the end of the day she will always be next to me. And I will always be next to her.

She felt me staring and tried to ignore it. She probably thinks I'm annoyed by her lack of enthusiasm about a beach wedding. But I'm not. I could get married at a rest stop for all I care. As long as I finally get to call her my wife, that's all that matters to me. She scrolled through some photos and I watched her fingers glide on the track pad. One particular finger of hers sparkled and shined almost as bright as her. I felt a smile start to form on my face and she noticed.

"What?" She said, looking at me now.

I just smiled. And she did too. It melted me and I wanted to cry. Her smile made the ring that I gave her look like a dull relic. Why couldn't I be married to her right now? Why did we have to go through all these invitations, dresses, and formalities? I wanted to complete my commitment to this woman. I wanted to call her my wife.

"Come here." I said.

"I have to get this done, Devyn." She said, half sighing, still looking at me and I grabbed her hand. The same way I grabbed it a few months ago when I got down on one knee in the city of her birth. That day was so perfect. I kissed her hand and touched her ring.

"I want to get married on the beach, Harper." I said into her hand.

She finally lifted me up and pulled me to her. Our lips touched and I breathed her in. We shared a kiss that could probably bring the dead back to life. She looked at me as if I had taken the breath from her.

"We'll get married on the beach." She said and smiled. I melted again.

"Bare foot?" I asked, beaming.

"Bare foot."
