Chapter Two: Jack...

It was that second week that Jack started riding our bus. His road was under construction, so he had to stay at my house, and was therefore on the same bus as me. That morning, we stopped at Becca’s house as usual. I moved my backpack aside to make room for her to sit, like I did every morning. This morning was different, though. Instead of making her way to the very back of the bus and sitting with me, she moved to the seat across the aisle from me, and sat with Jack. It unsettled me for some unknown reason, but I chose to ignore it. She and I exchanged our usual morning hellos, and then I put my headphones in and she started talking to Jack. They talked the entire way to the school. When we got off the bus, she gave me her usual hug, waved goodbye to me and Jack, and went off to her first period tech class. I saw her in between almost every class that day; with Jack. He walked her to every single class that day, and something inside me didn’t like it one bit. They sat next to each other in lunch, and I noticed that Jack placed himself in between she and I. I ignored it, but the strange behavior progressed. By the end of that week, it was so bad that my stomach was in knots. They were holding hands even… That night, I texted her, and this is how the conversation went:

Me: Hey

Her: Hiya! :)

Me: You seem to be in a good mood.

Her: I am lol.

Me: Why so happy? Just curious :P

Her: Well… Jack asked me out a few days ago.

Me: Really, when?

Her: 23d. Sorry I gtg. Homework :/ Later!

And that was it. That moment right there I realized why my stomach had been in knots, why I didn’t like them hanging out so much from the start; I had feelings for her. Somewhere in those first two weeks, she’d wheedled her way under my skin, but now Jack had her. I’d lost my chance.

The next Monday on the bus, it was obvious that they were dating. On the bus that morning, she sat with him, and he cradled his arms around her. She had her head rested on his shoulder, a peaceful smile on her thin face. He continued to walk her to every class, and leave her at each with a hug and a kiss. In the lunch line, he stood behind her with his arms around her waist, and kissed her on the cheek. I’d never seen him like this; so happy. He seemed at peace with the world, like he had no problems with anything or anyone. He started making good grades, making friends; his entire life was better because of this one girl. After about two weeks, though, his road was done being under construction, and he went back to his bus. Everything on the bus continued normally after that, but in school, things were the same. But then… On the 25th of November, everything changed. And by everything… I mean EVERYTHING. She got on the bus that morning wearing black jeans, a dark gray shirt that read “Tough luck!” and appeared to be written out of blood, and her black hoodie. Her hair was covering her eyes, which wore an unusual amount of black makeup, and her hood was up. All I could see of her face was her mouth. She was biting her lip, which was odd, because she only ever did that when she was frustrated, or holding back an emotion. What she could be frustrated about this early in the morning, I couldn’t figure. She sat down next to me without uttering a single word. I accepted her silence, and mirrored it. She pulled a tissue out of her backpack and started wiping off the makeup. Not even a moment after she’d removed all of the black smudge from her face; her entire body was racked with sobs. She shook for an entire minute, her breathing raspy. I wanted to ask what was wrong. I wanted to help. But I didn’t know how. I removed the hood from her head, and hooked my finger under her chin, pulling it to look at me. Tears were streaming down her face as she tried to look away. “Hey,” I said, holding her face in both of my hands, “Whose ass am I kicking?” That got a little broken smile; much like the one I saw on the first day I met her. She shook her head and tried to look away again. I moved my hands from her face and wrapped them around her body, hugging her in a way I’d wanted to for quite some time. She sobbed once, twice, three more times, then went limp. I knew what it meant. She’d given up; given in to the fact that she couldn’t do anything about whatever had happened. She pulled herself from my arms, wiped her tears away, put on a small amount of eyeliner, took off her hoodie, and straightened her shirt. She combed her fingers through her hair, removing any tangles that had happened from her sobbing, and sat up straight. She took a deep breath, and, since the bus had just reached the high school, stepped gracefully off of the bus. That day was so oddly different from the past month and a half, I nearly went into shock. She was closed; she’d separated herself from the world, even though she was tied to it by her body. She spoke to nobody, and looked at nobody. All she did was stare at the floor. She didn’t eat lunch, just sat at the edge of the table all alone, specifically avoiding Jack’s gaze. Instantly, I knew what had happened. “Oh…” I muttered. Jack huffed and turned away, while Rebecca just sat there silently, with one tear rolling down her cheek. The rest of the day was the same. She spent the bus ride home wrapped in my arms. The next two weeks continued the same way. The third week after the breakup went strange. Rebecca got better, just as I presumed. But something else happened, that I never would have thought of. Jack went downhill. Fast. He started off by being angry, then after about a day of that, he became sad. He even cried once or twice. And, to make matters worse, Rebecca and Keenan progressively became better friends. Jack cried more often, then one day, December 8th, he stopped being sad; he was livid.
