The Owl and the Dove

It is said by those who study nature that doves mate for life. This is one of my favorite story poems.

\"dove\"
“Who's there?” cried the owl to the night air.
He asked impatiently, “I say again! Who's there?”
A stony silence, then a rustle from above
“It is only I,” whispered the mourning dove.

“I have come seeking my one true love.
Have you seen him?” queried the dove.
“He went to the sunflower field today
and I fear my soul mate has lost his way.”

The owl indeed had seen her love pass
over the pine trees and across the grass.
“Oh, yes!” he cried, “Oh, yes indeed.
I tried to warn him, but he didn't heed.”

“The hunters were hiding waiting there
and they shot him down without a care.”
A silence fell as he told her his tale
and then at last a heart wrenching wail.

The owl saw her leave, she flew away
before a kind word he could utter or say.
Next morning he spied her as she flew
across the trees covered in morning dew.

A shot rang out not too long thereafter.
There arose the sound of cheerful laughter.
He bowed his solemn head in despair
for the loss of the dove and her beauty rare.

Oh this is sadly wonderful. Death of lovers. Mates for life. The wise owl knew their final flight. I loved this Susan. Very Good!

Such a wonderful poem Susan. We have doves come to our bird table every day, especially now as Winter is here and I just love to watch them and admire their beauty. This was so sad but lovely at the same time. How can anyone doubt God when we have such a beautiful world. Pat x

Good writing, sad story, well chosen characters and the imagery you conveyed had me watching the birds flight with the owl. Nice one!

Hi Susan! I just checked the home page and saw that you were being featured and had to come and say my hello and leave a nice comment for you.
Congrats! Writers like you should be more on the featured page! You write so well and I hope this continues!
I am so excited for you hehehe.

This was such a beautiful write. So well written and I literally have goosebumps on my skin.
Such a sad story and so well written with so much expressions and so many wonderful rhyming schemes.
This reminds me of your story a bit. Hopefully I am not being intervening and noisy. I mean no harm.

Hi Nazire well knock me over with a bowl of chicken soup. I would never have known if you hadn't told me. You talented sweet lady thank you for reading and commenting on this poem. When I wrote it I almost cried. I love doves and other animals so this to me was hard to write. It seems others care about wildlife as much as I do. I appreciate your kindness my friend. Susan :)

This is such a great poem! I love narrative poems like this, almost a lost art the narrative poem is, and it's great to see someone still writing them with such skill and heartfelt emotion. Great job!

Thank you Nanna. There are a few of the animal species that mate for life swans do as well. Once there mate dies they will not find another. I think though a sad situation it is as it should be. So glad you liked this. Susan :)

Hi my dear friend. Thank you. My writing compared to some of the others here is at best obscure. I am a pebble in a field of stones. I do appreciate the people here and new friends I have made through writing to me that is the best. Bless you my talented friend. Susan :)
