Chapter 5

Elizabeth’s POV

We decide to go to my favorite place, Albert’s. We find a table at a window overlooking the ocean and he pulls out my chair for me. “Thank you.”

“You’re welcome.”

The waitress comes to us and we tell her what we want. When she leaves I clear my throat. “I wanted to talk to you about what happened last night.”

“You mean you leaving like you did?”

“That’s part of it. I am sorry that I ran off like that it’s just that it scared me to have you so close.”

“Oh,” he says his face looking sad.

“No, um, uh… It’s not like that. I just that I like you and that scares me. I have never-“

“Damian!” a female voice calls out to him. I look over and it’s a very beautiful Indian girl. She walks closer. “I don’t mean to be rude, it’s just that I wanted to say hi and to let you know that I enjoyed talking to you yesterday.”

“Okay,” he says. I get up to leave about to excuse myself. I really don’t know what to think about her coming over, but as he grabs my hand and I freeze. It feels like electricity. “Stay,” he says looking at me and I sit back down. He looks back at the female still holding my hand. “Padma, this is Elizabeth. Elizabeth this is Padma, a family friend.” I just sit there looking between them, noticing the change in the girls, Padma’s, face before she quickly puts a smile back up.

“Hi,” I say while she just nods at me.

“Well, I guess I will see you later Damian.” I guess he just majorly busted her happy bubble.

He smiles and nods at her before she turns to leave. “I am sorry about that. She’s the girl that my father wants me to marry.” Just then the food comes and he finally releases my hand. I feel an ache in the pit of my stomach at the loss of warmth. “What was it that you wanted to tell me before we were interrupted?”

“I was saying that I’ve never been in a situation like that. I’m used to other people being around.”

“I didn’t mean to make you feel uncomfortable.”

“It wasn’t really that I wasn’t comfortable, but maybe too comfortable. That’s reminds me, I have your pants.”

“You can keep them.”

“It wouldn’t be right.”

“No, it’s fine. I would rather you keep them. I wouldn’t want you catching a cold in those shorts.” I laugh. “I love your laugh.” That quickly shuts me up with a clearing of throat. “Please don’t stop.”

“What is it about you that makes me nervous and excited and happy and afraid all at once?” I say all this low like kind of to myself , but he hears me.

“Someone told me that we were meant to be.”

“Mr. Greenberg.”

“He was very obvious wasn’t he?”

“Yes, yes he was.”

“I don’t understand it yet, but I feel so strong of a connection with you. So strong that I actually told Mr. Greenberg that I loved you.” He sees the shock on my face. “It shocked me too. He told me that sometimes God uses our own mouths to tell us things… That reminds me of something you said last night.”

“About our beliefs? Yeah, I don’t think that that matters anymore.”

“How can you tell?” He has a shocked smile on his face.

“There was a change in the office and I can see it on your face.”

He looks down at his plate. “We might need to eat seeing that we only have 30 minutes before we need to get back to work.”

I look at my watch. “Time went by fast.” I put a forkful of spaghetti in my mouth and almost choke when I see the look on his face. He looks like he can’t believe I just put all that food in my mouth and for some reason it doesn’t bother me for him to see me like that. I swallow. “I just realized I was hungry.” I swirl some more on my fork and lift it towards him. “Taste it, it’s so tasty.”

“No thank you. I will stick with my own food.”

“Come on, you gotta try it.”

I move my things beside him and move chair over so that I’m sitting beside him. “Come on, please? Don’t make a girl beg.”

He sighs exaggeratively, “Okay.” I smile big and feed him some of my spaghetti.

“It’s amazing. Let’s trade plates.”

“No. I’m eating my spaghetti.” I stick my tongue out at him with my eyes closed and am surprised when he kisses me on the cheek.

“I wanted to kiss your lips, but felt that would be too soon.”

“We aren’t even together.” My stomach is so in knots right now.

“But I want that to change, don’t you?”

“Yes,” I say breathlessly.

“Okay. We are now officially together.” I love when he smiles, it just lights up his face. “I don’t want to sound forward or move too quickly with you, but I really want to kiss you.”

“I want you to kiss me too.” My voice is so soft that he has to lean forward to hear.

He kisses my forehead. “When we kiss for the first time I know it will be great, but we need to be heading back to work right now.” He calls the waitress over and she brings us some containers with her. I guess she noticed that we weren’t really eating anything.

“Thank you,” we both say in unison.

She hands him the bill and smiles at us. “You two are a beautiful couple.”

“Thank you,” we say again and laugh.

Damian’s POV

Back at work… I’m really happy to be in a relationship with her. It’s like it just makes complete and utter sense. As I’m getting my thoughts together something comes above me and blocks my light so I look up and who do I see…

“Father,” I say standing, “How may I help you?” His face is red so I’m guessing that Padma talked to him. This really isn’t the place for such things.

“I just saw Padma,” he says his voice angry and hard.

“Father, I am at work. Can we discuss this later, please?”

“ I am your father! You do not suggest anything to me. How dare you? What has gotten into? Ever sense you met that little monkey-“

“Don’t you dare speak negatively of her,” I say under my breath.

“I will speak of the little slut anyway I please.” I honestly just almost hit my father just then, but instead I take a deep breath. “She has poisoned your mind against your own family!”

“You need to leave, right now. This is my workplace and you could cause me to lose my job. We can talk of this at another time because right now is wrong on so many levels.” Just then a hand grabs mine and another is placed on my shoulder. I don’t even have to look to see who they are. I’m just thankful for the support and to show that I am I squeeze Elizabeth’s hand a little tighter.

“Mr. Dama,” Mr. Greenberg begins, “Now is not the time for such things to be spoken of. I suggest that you leave my office quietly leave my office because I really don’t want to have to call security to escort you out.” My father turns on his heels even redder than before and quickly leaves the office.
