Ali woke the next morning to find that his suitcases were packed already for him, and that the supplies were also loaded into the trucks. Khali was waiting for him once he came out of the shower, his clothing layed out waiting, and a hot breakfast tray sitting on the litte bedside table.
"Thankyou my dear old friend. Are the staff I requested ready and waiting too?"
"Oh yes sire, the finest of your guards, maids and kitchen staff have been readied, and are waiting for you in the trucks at the present moment. Your advisor is also readying himself as we speak."
"Very good Kahli, and will you have second thoughts about accompanying me too? I could use a trusted ear for this journey my friend."
"As you wish sire, you know I could never resist your wishes" chuckling, Khali rushed out to pack his own suitcase.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
The journey to Tribesman Kaneef's village was a long, hot and thirsty one. Although, you could hardly call it a village, it was more like a small city, and Kaneef's home was quite impressively large, almost a small palace. The rest of the village though was quite poor, with barely inhabitable dwellings being used by his people, and scratching to provide enought o eat for their families while the Tribesleader lived in quite obvious luxury. How they had not overthrown Kaneef as yet, Ali did not know.
Kaneef's unwillingness to provide staff, was not due to being short staffed himself, it was more a conscious decision of Kaneef's to show dominance in his own village. Sheikh Ali had never backed down from a challenge though, and each time he visited, he brought with him his own impressive royal guard, consisting of 40 well trained and armed soldiers, as well as his own kitchen staff, the best of the palace maids, and his advisor.
He did not trust Kaneef enough to allow him to provide meals for his own people, there was too high a risk that the food would be tampered with, and he did not want Kaneef taking the food from his already impoverished people to feed Ali's men. So Ali always brought many trucks with him, carrying a large supply of all the foods that his men would be eating, as well as their cooking supplies.
Along with the supplies needed by his men and himself, Ali also brought a truck of medical supplies, and several trucks carrying basic food items that were becomming harder to obtain in the remote tribes due to the fighting, which he would present to Kaneef for his villagers.
These he was confident would help smooth over negotiations with Kaneef, and might allow him to finally lay all this unpleasantness to rest.
Ali didnt know when the fighting had originally started, it was before his father had died, making him Sheikh, but he did know that neither side was backing down in the slightest. While Kaneef claimed that it was Tribesleader Joharra's men that were attacking his village and stopping the trade convoys going through, Tribesleader Joharra claimed the same to be true of Kaneef's village.
Ali was at a loss as to how to stop this war, but one thing was for sure... one Tribesleader, was lying.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Arriving at Kaneef's compound, Ali quickly greeted the Tribesleader, showing him the trucks of medical and grocery supplies he had brought as a gift to his people. Kaneef thanked him deeply, seemingly pleased and led Ali into his home, and taking him and Khali to the wing of the building that he could settle him men into.
"Of course you will need your own servants Sheikh Ali" Kaneef had said sheepishly.
"Of course Tribesleader Kaneef, my staff are presently unloading my supplies from the trucks as we speak."
"Very good, I shall leave you to settle your men in then, in peace. The ministers are arriving this afternoon, so I shall expect you to be ready to greet them when they arrive."
Ali was a little taken back. For the ministers to be visiting, Kaneef must have requested them, which meant that something big was going to go down... and Ali did not know what. The thought did not set easy on his stomach, and he was glad that Khali had come along with him to offer some advice. He trusted in Khali more than he did his own advisor as Khali had been in the service of his father since his father was a boy, and knew that his father too, had entrusted the man with his confidence as well.
"Of course, I will be ready."
Ali then went to his room to wash and change after his journey, but his mind would not calm. "What can Kaneef be planning?" his mind kept mulling over and over.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
An hour later, Ali was refreshed, and had asked Khali to have his staff meet him in the large dining hall of their quarters. He had not inspected the staff as yet, being in too much fo a rush to get out of the palace,so he felt that he had best greet them and thank them for such an outstanding job considering the time contraints he had placed on them.
As he walked into the dining hall, he saw his guard all lined up in perfect formation, he greeted each one, shaking their hand and thanking them. He then moved onto the kitchen staff, and thanked them as well, telling the chef how glad he was not to have to be forced to eat Kaneef's cuisine. The elderly chef had heartily laughed at this. Then Ali moved down the line to Khali, and took both of his hands, before pulling him in for a warm hug. "Thankyou my old friend, I know the journey must have been hard on your bones, I will send the maid to tend you a hot bath as soon as we are done here."
"Thankyou sire, that would be muchly appreciated" Khali replied.
Ali then looked around, not seeing his maid.
"Where is the maid that was sent with you?" he asked with a frown of displeasure on his face.
"Oh, she is right here sire" Khali replied, a sly grin on his face that made Ali narrow his eyes at the old man.
Khali stepped aside, taking hold of the small woman who was hiding behind him.
Ali groaned aloud, and shook his head. Starring back at him with a look that was a fair imitation of a mouse about to be eaten by a cat, was Sarah.
"I explicitly asked for the best maid to be sent with us" Ali snapped out, his hands balled into fists at his sides.
Khali, grinning widely, and nodding his head replied "Yes sire, Miss Sarah IS the best maid that we have in all the palace."
Rubbing his hand over the back of his neck, Ali gave Sarah a very dirty look, then seeing a tear start to slide down her cheek, and her bottom lip trembling he softened slightly.
"Very well, she can stay, but keep her out of my way" he told Khali before starting to stride away.
He stopped before the door, turned back to Sarah and said softly "Please be kind enough to tend Khali with.... whatever needs he might have immediately". The steely cold glint in his eye making Sarah feel sick, as the true meaning behind his words sank in.
"Did he just ask me to whore myself to you? Sarah asked Khali incrediously.
"I do believe so Miss Sarah" Khali said, a dissappointed look on his face as he looked at Ali, "but dont frett, I am long past wanting the delights of a beautiful young lady like you" he told he, gently patting her on the back.
Angry, Sarah spun around, tears streaming down her cheeks and called out to the sheikh just as he was walking through the door, "Go to hell Ali".
Ali stopped in his tracks... turned his face toward her, "Dont worry Sarah, I am always in hell around you" he said softly, a sad look on his face as he left the room.
Khali told the rest of the staff to go about their duties, then took Sarah's arm and steered her with him back towards the bathrooms. "Come now Miss Sarah, I truley would appreciate some help with the bath. I am not as young as I once was, and am quite stiff. I am not sure if I can even bend down to turn the tapps on or check the temperature."
Sarah placed her hand on top of his, and told him "It would be my pleasure to tend you Khali, and if you need help with anything else, then just let me know. It would never be a trouble to help someone as kind as you. Ali on the other hand... I just dont understand him. One minute he seems to be nice, then he goes and acts like a complete... well... it is not polite to say what he is acting like!."
"Pay him no mind Mis Sarah, he has alot on his shoulders of late, and he truley is not normally like this at all. You truley must get under his skin I think" Khali gave her a gentle smile.
"How do you mean Khali?"
Khali just waggled his eyebrows at her while saying "Oh I think you know what I mean Miss Sarah."
"But he cant, there is no way that he should be letting himself feel any way at all, or even look in my direction Khali, his is royalty, and I am nothing, a convicted whore, nothing.'
Khali stopped walking, looked sadly into her eyes and said softly "I think we both know that your conviction was very suspicious Miss Sarah, my intuition tells me that you are as far from a whore as a young lady could be arent you Miss?"
Sarah's jaw nearly hit the floor "What do you mean Khali?"
He just gave a slight chuckle, and said "I have serious doubts that you have ever even known a man before, or if you have, you have very limited experience. And I right Sarah?"
Sarah blushed madly, her bottom lip trembling "How can you tell?... noone else believes me."
"Sarah" he sighed "I am not blind, I may be old, but i can tell a true innocent when I see one. We will get this whole mess sorted out, dont you worry."
"I don't think so, you heard the sheikh, he believes that I AM a  whore."
"Give him time Sarah, his mind may think it, but it is obvious that his heart does not."
"You are a good man Khali, too good for the sheikh, now lets go run you that bath,  I will even put some of Ali's private essential oils into it for you, they should help soothe away your aches and pains, it will be our little secret" Sarah grinned as she led Khali away.
----------------------------------------------------------------
Later that evening, Kaneef had sent word that the ministers had arrived, and were expecting Ali's presence at their first meeting.
Gathering his guards, Ali called for Khali to accompany him to the meeting.
Khali walked in, looking so much happier, and refreshed with a spring in his old step, and a grin on his face.
"You look like a satisfied old man Khali" Ali snapped, irritation oozing from his every pore.
"Oh yes sire, I am VERY satisfied" Khali gave a low chuckle, and gave Ali a cheesy cheshire cat grin.
"I take it the maid took care of all your needs then?" Ali ground out, his jaw clenching.
Khali could not help but to bait Ali a little more... and why not?, he deserved it."Oh yes sire, Miss Sarah went above and beyond to make sure I am feeling much relieved"
Ali snapped then, pacing back and forth like a caged panther, his face reddened in rage as he brought his hands up, raking them through his hair. "I knew it!!"
Before Ali could say anything further, Khali walked up to him, placed a hand on Ali's shoulder and calmly told him, "Miss Sarah did nothing but run me a deep hot bath that I could not run for myself, and most kindly added a few drops of your own personal oils to ease my pains. You need to stop seeing her with such tainted eyes sire, and listen to your heart about her. Your heart knows the truth."
Ali dropped his hands, looking at Khali with a look of utter disbelief.
"She only ran you a bath??" he whispered.
"Ali, it has been several decades since this old man was able to rise to the challenge of pleasing a woman" Khali told him sadly "While that disheartens me, what disappoints me was seeing you ordered Miss Sarah to do what you told her to do."
Ali looked down at his feet, and felt truley ashamed as he relived that moment over again in his mind. The look in Sarah's eyes when he had asked her to do it cut him deeply.  He had seen the spark between them die out in her eyes, as the tears started to form in them.
"I  know my old friend, I do not believe myself that I acted that way. I do not know what it is about Sarah, she just gets me so worked up whenever I see her."

"You were pushing her away" Khali nodded as he watched Ali drop into a chair.
"Yes... she is a convicted criminal, I cannot have anything to do with her, there can be no future for me with her in it, the Ministers and tribesleaders would not accept a criminal as my wife. It would surely end up in war" Ali said wearily.
"Sire, forgive the ramblings of an old man, but we are already at war if you had not noticed. And as for Sarah's conviction, it does not sit well with me sire. I think there is more to her arrest than what you can see."
Before Ali could ask any more of Khali, one of Kaneef's staff walked into the room requesting they follow him to the meeting at once.
Ali followed him, Khali's last words echoing through his mind "there is more to her arrest than what you can see".
"Could it be possible that Sarah is innocent afterall?... but how could that possibly be" he thought as he entered the conference room and had to push all personal thoughts aside and concentrate on the ministers already waiting to greet him.
The first hour of the meeting was filled with formal greetings, and tribal formalities. Wishing that they could just get to the point that they were all there for, Ali felt a real impatience, having to mentally chastise himself and respect the tribal traditions more than once.
Once the ministers started to read out the reports that they had been gathering from all the smaller and more remote tribes within the country, it became painfully obvious that the trade and medical supplies that were being prevented from getting through to these people had become more than problematic, it was putting his country into crisis.
The ministers were busy talking with Kaneef about the trade routes, when Ali decided that he must take action now to help his people, not talk about who's should be at blame for the hijacked supply trucks as Kaneef was doing right now.
Ali slipped away from the crowd into a quiet corner, took out his satellite phone, and called the palace. Others might want to talk, but Ali was a man of action. He would send a secret convoy of supplies tonight he had decided, and this time, he would personally see that it got through!
