Ali paced back and forth outside his bedchamber, waiting for his physician to come out to him. His mind would not stop playing over the words he had heard those two men yell at each other during the attack.

Why would anyone want his Sarah? Admittedly he had not made their union official by holding a state wedding as yet for his countrymen, but that would take time, and they had only just gotten home after their wedding. He would have to get plans in motion as soon as possible to hold the wedding. Even though the Bedouin ceremony had been a legally binding ceremony in their country, the state wedding would be needed to present Sarah as his wife.

Running his hand over his forehead, he decided he could not wait any longer, and knocked on the door. He had to see how Sarah was. She had been deathly pale and shaking when he had laid her on the bed earlier, and his physician had been with her for a long time now. Surely it was not serious, her cut did not seem terribly deep from what he could see of it as he had held it coming home, but the shock she had taken, it was her emotional health that worried him most.

The bedchamber door opened slowly, and his physician peered out. “Oh, you can come in now sire, she needs rest, so please do not wake her. I had to sedate her, and stitch her injury, while not serious, it was a deep enough that I thought it best to be on the safe side.”

“Very good, thank you my old friend, but how was she coping before you sedated her?”

“Fairly well actually, but she was so worked up that she could not rest, so I had to give her an injection. She will be asleep till morning, after that, she will require light pain medication only. I have given her an injection of antibiotics as well, just to be on the safe side. I don’t imagine the assailant had disinfected the dagger before striking her with it. ”

Ali sighed deeply, feeling the tension melt away from him. “Of course, I just wonder how much she can cope with after all that she has suffered”

His physician took Ali by his shoulders “She is stronger that she looks Ali, she is a fighter, a good match for you” he chuckled at him, giving Ali’s shoulders a squeeze. “And might I add, an excellent choice for your wife” he smiled at Ali.

“Let me know when to expect the patter of feet around the palace my friend, this palace has been silent of such a joyful sound too long.” Ali’s mouth dropped open, a look of pure shock on his face as he stared at his physicians back.

“Is there something I should know?” he asked. “No my friend, no signs of an heir as yet, but do not be surprised if it happens quicker than you might have planned, Sarah tells me that you are not using protection?”

Ali paled. “No, we haven’t, I have not even given it another thought…I can’t believe how irresponsible I have been, Sarah was pure, of course she was not on any prevention, it was up to me. To think, if she had been with child this afternoon, the baby could have been lost!”

His physician turned and walked back to Ali. “You cannot punish yourself with thoughts like this, Sarah is well, and there is plenty of time to think of babies. But if you do not wish for her to be in child soon, I suggest you take precautions. She seems to be in excellent health, so falling should not be a problem.”

Ali nodded. “Of course, and thank you once again. I shall call if she needs you through the night.”

The doctor bowed, then left Ali looking over his wife’s sleeping form.

“How could I have been so stupid?” he asked himself. “Now is no time to risk a pregnancy, especially an unplanned one. Not while there is a threat to her life.”

With the decision firmly in his mind to protect Sarah from now on, he slid into bed next to her, and simply watched her beautiful face until sleep claimed him.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sarah woke with a thumping headache, and her shoulder feeling like it had been struck with a red hot branding iron.

Moaning in pain, she tried to sit up, but found the stitches in her shoulder pulled, making her hiss out in pain. The sound made Ali jump, instantly awake and looking toward Sarah with a frown on his face. “What is it? Are you in pain?, do you need me to call the doctor back?”

“Hey, slow down, I am ok, just feeling a bit headachey, and as if I have been stabbed… oh wait, I HAVE been stabbed” she grinned lopsidedly at him, trying to ease the worry that was furrowing deep creases in his forehead, making him seem years older than he was.

Ali’s features softened as he looked on her with love. “Only you could try and make me smile while you suffer Sarah."

Leaning over to the bedside table, Ali could see that his maid had already been by, while they slept and had left the tray with a jug of water, a glass and the pain tablets that the doctor had left for Sarah. Popping two of the little white pills out of their packet, he poured a glass of cool water, and held them out to her. Sarah sat up and took the pills from him and swallowed them, handing back the glass. Before she could lay back down, Ali slid in behind her at the head of the bed, and proceeded to lay her against his chest, then ran his fingers through her hair, massaging away her pain.

“Remember last time you did this for me? I almost gave in and let you take me that day” she murmered, slurring the words as his blissful fingers melted the pain away.

Ali chuckled “And I would have gladly taken you that day too little one, but I am glad that you ran away, it gave me the time to see you through a husbands eyes, and not those of a lustful sheikh.”

After a few more minutes of massaging, Sarah’s breathes deepened, and Ali could feel all her muscles loosen up…she had fallen alseep. Gently letting her back down onto the bed as he extracted himself from behind her, and crept out of the room.

As Ali marched along the corridoors, his new Advisor had to jog to keep up with his long strides as did Khali, who was rapidly going red with the effort. Ali stopped, then turned back to Khali. “I need you to summon Maya to my bedchamber to sit with Sarah, she is not well this morning, and I do not wish her to awaken alone. I think a friendly face, and a female ear to talk to might be just what she needs. I would then like you to speak with my coordinator. We need to hold a state wedding as soon as possible.” Khali bowed and left in the opposite direction toward the servants quarters.

As Ali entered his board room, his officials lined the seats around the large rectangular oak desk. Ali stood at the head of the table, looked at each of them. “What have you found out so far on this attack?” he asked them.

“Well sire, the men who attacked you were not from any of the tribes, but apart from that, there is little we have found out as yet” the small plump man to his right told him.

Ali sighed, this was not the news he was wanting to hear. “And of my Advisor?, what of him?”

A tall, thin young man in the back of the table stood addressing Ali, “he was tracked to the outer edges of the western oasis, where his tracks simply vanished. No one has heard a thing from him since.”

Ali thought this over. There was only one thing in the desert that moved around leaving no tracks. “Sandmen?” he asked.

“Yes, we think so sire. Hopefully they have taken care of him for you.”

Ali nodded. If the Sandmen had indeed attacked him, there would belittle evidence ifanyleft to prove it.

Ali turned back toward his newly appointed Advisor, I need you to contact the travel agency that Sarah worked with. Find out what they know of the trip she won, who financed it, and what her friends know. “ the Advisor took down several notes in his notepad, then walked over to the computer workstation in the corner of the room, and sat down to work.

“Now, I need the ministers called into a private meeting here at once. Noone speak a word of this, I do not wish for anymore unpleasantness. “ he said as he sat down at his table and started to go through the paperwork that was there waiting for him.

Two hours later, while Ali was up to his elbow in paperwork, his New Advisor interrupted him.

“Sire, I am sorry to disturb you, but I have uncovered a few facts that are quite disturbing.’

Ali looked up at him “And they are?”

“The travel agency that your wife worked at, it isowned by a large Australian franchise, so that checks out ok, as does the christmas raffle. But her friends sire, I have managed to speak to three of her workmates, whom all claim the same thing sire. They were all informed that the small plane that chartered Sarah from the major airport to Barrauk, had crashed into the mountains and everyone on board had died. None of them knew that Sarah was stillalive.”

Ali paled, his hands gripping the papers he had in them, his knuckles whitening and creaking under the pressure.

“Find out who sent that message to them immediately” he ground out.

“I did sire, and they all said…. well…. they told me that the man who had rang them, was you sire. A man claiming to be the Royal Sheikh of Barrauk.”

Ali swore. “Get in contact with our embassy there, I want the necessary documents, papers, court orders, I do not care what it takes... but I want the phone records of all those people extraced and fowarded here immediately. We need to know who this is.”

His advisor bowed deeply “Yes sire.”

Over the next several weeks, Sarah’s arm healed nicely, and once the stitches came out, she was suprised with how thin the scar was. Easily hidable beneath her dresses and robes.

She had also been planning their official wedding with Maya, feeling as excited as a schoolgirl as they pored over bridal magazines and ooohed and ahhed at the gowns. Sarah had chosen an ancient Grecian styled gown with a gathered bust, then golden lacwork down the stomach. The rest of the gown flowed beautifully from there.

Ali had often spotted the women shoulder to shoulder as they chose the decorations, invitations and everything else that Sarah wanted to personally choose for their wedding herself, and had to smile. It brought him so much joy to see her this happy, her attack forgotten as she looked forward to their big day.

The wedding had been set for 8 weeks time. Not as soon as he would have liked, but there was protocol to follow, and the caterers, and the venue needed plenty of time for the booking. Not to mention the time it would take to have the gown hand made, not that either of the women would let him see the design. He did not care for the details, he only wished to finally placehis ring on her finger, and announce to the world that she was his.

Sarah continued to suffer the migraines occasionally, and while Ali did not mind in the slightest tending to her to aleviate them, he worried as to the continuance of them, and summoned his physican to examine her once more.

As the doctorchecked Sarah thoroughly, he found nothing wrong. “I am sorry Sarah, I cannot find anything majorly wrong that would cause you to still suffer them. The scar from where the surgeon drained the pressure from your brain is fully healed, there is no tenderness. Your blood pressure is a little high, but planning a wedding will do that.”

“Oh, well, that is good news isnt it? Maybe they will go away on their own, they do seem to be coming less frequently than before.”

“Yes, I imagine so”

“Umm, there was another thing you might be able to help me with, Ali and I both agreed after the whole helicopter incident, that we should wait till after the wedding and all this other business is over to try for a baby. While he is protecting me at the moment, I feel awfully terrible for making it his responsibility, and if a condom should break, then that is just not good enough. I wish to be put on the contraceptive pill.”

“Very wise Sarah, With your migraines howeverI cannot prescribe the normal type for you, but you can take what is called the “mini pill’ it is what they give new mothers who wish to protect themselves from further pregnancy while breastfeeding. While it is still highly affective, it should not furtheraggrevate these migraines. I will leave you the prescription, just start on the first day of your next menstrual cycle on the coordinating day on the red panel of the back of the pills.” The doctor drew a small diagram showing Sarah what he meant, before writing her out the script . Also, I would like to see you start a multivitamin with iron. Your diet has changed a lot since coming to our country, which could also be contributing to your migraines. I would like to take a full blood count to check for vitamin and irondeficiencies while I am on a roll” he told her, smiling softly as he took out his syringe kit from his case.

Sarah smiled back “As long as you have a lollypop in that case of yours for me when you finish” she grinned at him.

The doctor gave her a cheeky grin back “Ahh, I knew there was a reason why I liked you Sarah, you have a wonderful sense of humor” he chuckled as he pulled out a red lollypop. “Cherry flavor, just don’t tell my wife I keep sweets in my bag, she would be most displeased. But they are for the children, honest.”

“But there are no children in the palace” Sarah informed him.

He laughed at her “Ah, she does not know this though.”

Sarah laughed and promised to keep his secret as he finished up with her and left.

Maya passed the doctor leaving just as she was coming to see Sarah.

She quickly entered the room and sat beside Sarah at the table beside the bed.

“You are unwell?” she asked, concern written all over her face.

“Oh, just the migraines still Maya, nothing serious. Although I did convincethe doctorto prescribe me the pill, so that will be a relief off my shoulders when I can start it.’

Maya shook her head a little sadly. “They had no pill when I was of child bearing age, wives gladly bore children for their husbands, but these are strange circumstances, so I can see why this is necessary for you.”

“Thank you Maya, it means so very much to me to be able to confide in you, and have you by my side so much. I never knew my mother, so my grandmother was like a mother to me. I have really missed her since she died, and have had no one like her since… well… not until now that is.”

Maya’s eyes were glistening with tears, as she grabbed Sarah tightly into her arms, hugging her long and firmly, rubbing her back as she did so. “Thank you Sarah, it has been a long time since I have had someone to fuss over. My daughter married a wealthy banker many manyyears ago, but she died during childbirth due to complications. “

Sarah pulled back from the old woman’s arms slightly, “Now, you have me, if you would like, that is?”

Maya nodded fiercely, “I would like that very much Sarah”

Sarah beamed at her ‘I would like that too.”

Sniffing, Maya blew her nose on her tissue, before shoving it back up her sleeve. “Now, the reason I came rushing here in the first place, was to let you know that tomorrow is Ali’s birthday. I was not sure if you knew the date considering everything else that has been going on.”

“Really?... Ali never told me when his birthday was, I had no idea. What am I going to do for him then?, I have no money, and no idea what he would like, or even how to get him anything as I have been at the palace since we got back.”

Maya thought. “I know, Ali had told me several times how the Bedouin women showed you how to cook in their traditional style, and how much it reminded him of his childhood. Why not cook for him tomorrow night?”

Sarah smiled widely, her face lighting up “That is such a brilliant idea!... oh, but the ingredients, I will need to get to the market for fresh ingredients, how will I do that without him knowing what I plan to do?”

“Well, you could come with me this afternoon if you like? I won’t be going for very long though, only to pick up my medicines for my arthritis, but you could gather what you need from the growers market next to the pharmacy.”

“Brilliant, count me in, I have that script that needs to be filled as well. But how will we slip past the guards without Ali knowing?”

“Leave that up to me” Maya grinned at her, a wicked gleam sparkling in her eyes.

“I travel with the laundry services truck, so I will just hide you in the back with the laundry.”

“I like your style Maya, has anyone told you that for a women of your age, your mind is as sharp as a tack?”

Maya chuckled heartily, before pulling Sarah’s hand with hers.

“We best get you hidden right away, the truck is due to arrive in only fifteen minutes or so, and do not worry about money, the growers market has a running account with the palace. Everything will be covered.”

Excitedly, Sarah hurried along with the old woman, she could just imagine Ali’s face when he came to dinner the following night as saw what she had done.
