Ali sat at the head of the table in the boardroom, feeling slightly overwhelmed by the response he had gotten to his urgent call for a meeting with the Ministers.

Surrounding him, were all six of the Ministers, their aids and guards and countless other officials and heads of state. The room was completely packed, standing room was so limited that they had opened the side sliding door that led to the smaller meeting room, and that also was packed to overfilling with officials.

Ali’s Advisor had handed out presentation folders listing all the information they had gathered so far on the kidnapping, as well as the reports of the recent attacks that had been linked to the Sandpeople.

One of the Ministers, who had been at Kaneef’s compound stood up and held out both his hands in front of him, ushering the crowd of people to be silent. Then he looked into Ali’s eyes, a hard cold look set on his old face as he spoke.

“What is the meaning of this Sheikh? Do you honestly believe that we will spend endless man hours, and resources looking for your maid?”

Ali rose, then walked around the table to stand next to the Minister, never taking his eyes off the man. “No, I do not expect you to do this for my maid, but I do expect you to do this for my wife, whom is carrying the only heir that exists to the Royal throne of Barrauk.”

The crowd immediately broke into a mixture of cries of disbelief, and anger. The Minister once again held his hands up to try and quiet down the crowd, but they seemed to ignore his quiet gesture.

“SILENCE!” the Minister shouted, stamping his walking stick onto the ground with a resounding *crack*. The crown instantly froze, and looked toward the pair of men, who were now locked in a dual of stares.

“Explain yourself Ali, before I lose my patience and end this madness”.

Ali took a deep breath and then explained how he was indeed involved in the attack on Kaneef’s men. But how the circumstances behind Kaneef’s claims had been distorted. That is was in fact his shipment to the villages had been ambushed by Kaneef’s men, and that both sides had lost men. He then went on to explain how Sarah had been attacked, and he had been injured as a result, but how Sarah had jumped in and saved his life, risking her own time and time again.

The Minister listened intently the whole time, but then raised his hands to stop Ali.

“This is the same woman that you took to your bed and initiated?”

“Yes, and no Minister” Ali replied.

“What do you mean yes and no? either she was the same woman, or she wasn’t, now which is it?”

Ali sighed “She is indeed the same brave woman who was in my bed that night, but she staged the whole virginal initiation scene to save my life. It was Kaneef’s men whom attacked us that night as I have told you, and after stitching my wound up, and getting me back to the compound, Sarah tended me, and was cleaning my clothing. When she was coming back to check on my condition, she overheard my own Advisor, speaking to one of Kaneef’s personal guards. They were discussing how they had moved the bodies, and made it look like I had taken my men and in cold blood slaughtered his own. They were after my blood that night, so Sarah thinking quickly, jumped into my bed, wounded herself and made it look like we had been in bed all night.”

The room once again erupted in a mixture of excited and angry voices.

Once the room had fallen silent, the Minister, looking rather confused spoke once more. “Yet you fled the compound that night while Kaneef and we Ministers were in the middle of peace negotiations. We were in fact close to completing a contract that would have ensured peace for the Trade routes out of Barrauk.”

Ali shook his head. “It was Kaneef’s men who attacked my own shipment. Do you honestly believe that they would honor such an agreement? I was told that Kaneef’s demands for an agreement involved handing Sarah over unwillingly for him to use any way he wished. Do you deny this?”

The Minister dropped his gaze down, and then in a small voice admitted “No, I do not deny it, Kaneef did indeed want the woman to take as his own.”

“I would never hand over a woman as part of an agreement. That would be tantamount to rape. And certainly not the woman that I love, and wanted to claim for my own wife. Sarah is such a brave and loyal woman, who has been treated with such distaste and prejudice since coming to our country, yet has made such sacrifices, even when they almost claimed her own life. That night that she wounded herself, Khali and I whisked her away from the compound, and took her by horseback over the desert to my Bedouin home tribe at the far oasis. On the journey, her wound became infected, and her blood became poisoned from it. She almost died, but still, she did not complain, not once did she ask for anything for herself. Once she was recovered and out of danger, I asked her to marry me, and she agreed. We wed by my people’s traditional ancient ceremony. She is indeed my wife.”

The Minister paled, and then on shaky legs, he sat down. “What have you done Ali?” he asked on a whisper of a breath. “You have wed a convicted criminal, a whore! your people will rip the palace apart once they hear of this. The government will be overthrown.”

Ali felt his face go red, his hands balling into fists as rage took over his every thought. “You will not ever dare call my wife a whore, EVER! She was purposefully accused of those crimes, and I will flay the flesh on any mans back who dare insinuates that she was anything less than the innocent victim that she was.”

Ali struggled to calm himself, his hands were shaking from the effort as he closed his eyes and took a few deep breathes.

One of the other Ministers came forward. “Ali, you know that your people may not accept any heirs to the throne that were not from a pure virginal bride, your child will not be recognized by the elders.”

“My bride WAS pure and untouched on our wedding night, and the evidence was displayed as per tradition and presented to the tribal elders. My bride and our child WILL be recognized and shall be held with all the respect and honor that befits any Royalty. The State Wedding was due to be held in another few weeks, which would have made our union official to the whole country.”

Ali sat down, feeling deflated and all his energy draining at the mention of their wedding, the wedding that may now never take place.

“These are not the issues at present anyway; the real issue is that she was taken from here three days ago, kidnapped by the same uniformed men who attacked us near spring cavern. There are drawings in the folders done by my sketch artist that show the uniforms. We have been unable to track the two white vans that took her, as their tracks led into the desert, and after leading us on a goose chase, they disappeared.”

The crowd hushed, as one after another, the men opened their folders, examining the pages contained inside.

A few questions were asked about the Australian phone records and on the charges that were placed on Sarah. Ali took out the note that he had kept that had been taken from her baggage, and he passed it around the Ministers, some paling as they saw their own names on the list.

“As you can see Ministers, this all seems to be one whole network of issues pointing to the same direction… my ex Advisor, and the Sandmen.”

Ali adjourned the meeting for an hour while a meal was served to the men and they sat around discussing their theories with each other. Ali however, could not bring himself to eat, he had not been able to since Sarah was taken. Food seemed to turn to ash in his mouth, and he was unable to swallow a single bite. He simply sat at his desk; elbows leant against the top with his head in his hands.

After the meal had been finished, the Ministers gathered together for further discussions privately.

When they finally filed out of the side office, they lined up in front of Ali.

“Sire, if it can be proven that this child was conceived after your wedding, we have agreed to use our full influences and resources to help find her.”

Ali nodded, then walked over to his computer workstation, taking out the fax that the doctor had given him.

“Here, as you can see, this was taken the morning that Sarah was abducted. The HCG levels correspond with a 7 week pregnancy, which just happens to be the exact time we wed. My baby was conceived on our wedding night.”

The Ministers all leaned around, reading the sheet before nodding to each other and calling their respective officials over to them.

“Very well” one of them spoke “we will set this in motion, however, once Sarah is returned, the state wedding must take place at once. We will spread the word, if any of these men so much as pokes his head up, we will know.”

Feeling such a huge wave of gratitude wash over him, Ali’s legs buckled under him, and he had to sit back down before he fell down.

For the first time since she had been taken, he had hope.

Sarah awoke on her 4th day away from her husband, feeling to a degree better, but on others, much worse. While her head no longer felt as if a heavy metal band was pounding away inside it, and she was feeling stronger, her stomach on the other hand was still rolling around as if she were out at sea in a storm, in a blow up dinghy.

As she tried to sit up, her head spun, and she had to lean over and reach for the bowl that Sol had left beside the bed on the little table for her. After a few minutes of retching, she lay back panting hard, wiping sweat from her ghost pale face.

Sol entered, and taking in her appearance, he immediately rushed to her side, pulling open his bag and reaching for his instruments.

Quickly taking her temperature, and listening to her chest, he wiped the hair from her face. Reaching back into his bag, he took from it a clear zip lock bag filled with dry plain crackers.

“Here, try some of these, only a couple though. I shall bring you some sweet tea. It should help ward off the morning sickness. I shall try and be here a little earlier each morning, and bring you them. The more vomiting the guards hear, the more they will get suspicious. Until you are feeling better though, the IV needs to stay in. I shall start infusing your fluids with a mild anti-nausea drug as well. It seems as if your little bundle truly wants to make its presence known” he smiled at her, giving her belly a small pat before opening the bag and handing her a cracker.

“Here, try it, a pregnant stomach does not take too kindly being left empty, it can make the nausea many times worse. So nibble on those throughout the day when you need to.”

Sarah smiled at him, taking a small mouse bite out of the corner of the cracker. After she had swallowed it she found that her stomach bounced it into a painful cramp once more, she gasped, holding onto her stomach painfully.

“Okay Sarah, breath through it deeply, I’ll add that nausea drug right away.” Sol stood, and took out a small glass vial from his bag, drawing a few mils into a syringe; he took her hand and injected the drug into the IV line in her hand.

“Give that about 20 minutes to really work, and you can try again. We want to keep that little neice or nephew of mine healthy now don’t we, and you not eating, is just not going to help that.”

Sol sat on the edge of the bed again and took Sarah’s hand.

“So, tell me, how did that little brother of mine end up with a beauty like yourself?” he teased her, obviously trying to get her mind of her stomach’s protests.

Sarah took a deep breath then started filling Sol in on all that had happened since she had come to Barrauk. When she was finished, Sol was shaking his head in disbelief.

“I knew that things were dire, but I did not know that he would sink to such depths as to go this far, and with innocents such as yourself too.”

“What? who?” Sarah asked confused.

“Rasheed, Ali’s Advisor, the man who has you captive here Sarah. After I was exiled from my family, he approached me, told me the plans he had for Barrauk. I joined him as I knew that one day, he would slip up, and it would give me the opportunity to right the wrongs that I did against my family. I remain silent, and do not stir up the waters so that I remain close enough to be useful.”

“Oh Sol, you cannot have done something so bad as to have been exiled surely? You are such a good man, and you do not deserve to be here with these men”

Sol lowered his gaze, squeezing her hand. “But I did Sarah, I fell in love with my oldest brothers betrothed. His wedding was arranged by the Ministers, a mixing of tribes they called it. It was meant to join two of the largest families in Barrauk together. Shael however, fell in love with me, as I did her. We did not want it to happen, but it did, and when she could not stand the guilt of shaming her family by not honoring the arranged marriage, she drove her car into a tree at high speed, killing herself and my unborn child along with her. I was then exiled by my father for shaming the Royal family.”

“I am so very sorry Sol, you obviously loved her dearly, to have lost so much, I…I am at a loss for words” Sarah whispered.

Sol wiped away a tear from his cheek then gave her a smile.

“Don’t feel bad Sarah, it brings me such joy to see that my brother Ali has finally found his love, I only wish thatSharif can do the same, mend his heart after all the damage that I did.”

“SoSharif, that is Ali and your older brother?”

“Yes, he is the King Sarah, although I never got to see him to his thrown, I was exiled only weeks before my father Kareem died.”

Sarah sat up, taking his cheeks in her small hands “Sol, if your father was alive, I am sure that he would not only be proud of you, but be ashamed that he exiled you like that. You are not a bad person, so please do not punish yourself for simply loving another.”

“Thank you Sarah, if only everyone had your views, but my father Kareem was very traditional and old fashioned. “

“I am sure that Ali does not feel that way though, have you spoken to him since this all happened?”

‘No, I haven’t, but do not worry, I WILL see you back to him safely, you have my word on that Sarah, just keep yourself quiet and on this bed, I will take care of everything, but it will take me at least another week to arrange the things I will need. Do you think you can cope with that long?”

Sarah sighed deeply, then looking into Sol’s deep dark eyes, nodded. “With you by my side, I can last that long” she promised him.

“Good girl, now see if those crackers stay down this time.”
