Sarah sat at Ali’s bedside, holding his hand and talking to him constantly, telling him how much she loved him, and that she had done so all along, and that he would make the most wonderful father. For days he floated in and out of consciousness as his body recovered from the severe blood loss due to his wounds. The bullet had severed a main artery to his arm, and by the time he was brought to the hospital, his heart was faltering from lack of blood volume. The surgical team had worked miracles repairing the artery and saving both his life, and his arm… but it had been very touch and go, requiring many units of donor blood, including Sol’s very own.

Sol and Sharif also spent countless hours each day sitting by him, reliving childhood adventures as they spoke to him, trying to give him the lifeline he needed to pull himself back from the hell he was in. But Sarah… she refused to leave his side, only walking the couple of feet away from his bedside to use the bathroom when she needed, then sinking back into the chair beside his bed, holding his hand and praying.

Her voice had gone hoarse from praying to Allah to save the man she loved, but still, she kept praying.

Sol had come to try and take her away many times to rest and get back into bed. He tried telling her that she was far too weak herself to push like this, but she simply would not, could not leave him. In the end, Sol had brought his Thermometer, stethoscope and blood pressure machine to her so that he could keep an eye on her.

Finally on the 6th day, Ali opened his eyes, to peer into the red puffy ones of his wife.

“Hey” she said on a whisper soft breath, a gentle smile on her face.

“You sure know how to get everyone worked up around here” she said, before she leant back so that he could see who was behind her.

Sharif and Sol were just standing up from their seats to the side of Sarah, relief showing on their faces as they stepped forward, grinning from ear to ear.

“Praise be to Allah” Sharif cried out as he reached over gripping Ali’s hand tightly in his.

Sol took Ali’s other hand ”Welcome back little brother, we thought you might have been lost to us for good this time” he murmured, a tear sliding down his cheek as he gripped Ali’s hand tighter.

“And leave my family alone?” Ali asked, raising an eyebrow as he smiled weakly.”Never!” he said, shaking his head.

“Speaking of family honey, I would like you to meet my obstetrician, the man who will be delivering this little darling she said as she placed one hand on her now quite protruding belly, and one hand on Sol’s shoulder.

“But, you need a specialist” Ali insisted.

“I am” Sol interrupted. “After father banished me, I was determined to do something to help our people. I trained to be a doctor, passed with honors, then trained to be a specialized obstetrician. Sarah has asked me to take care of her pregnancy, I was hoping that you would not mind?”

“Mind? It would fill me with such pride and honor to know that she was in no safer hands Sol.”

Ali struggled to lean up, Sharif thrusting several pillows behind his back to support him. Indicating to his brothers to take a seat either side of him on the end of his bed, Ali relaxed and broke into smiles as his brothers caught up on their lives with each other, then shared their memories of growing up together. Sarah’s giggles at their tales warming his heart. His family, all here together at long last.

==============================

Over the next several days, Ali continued to grow stronger, his color returned to his cheeks, and the glint in his eye sparkled as his appetite also returned with gusto. He was also allowed to take short walks around the ward which he relished to do, speaking warmly to the other patients as he walked, offering encouragement to them.

Sarah still did not leave his side, even though he could see that she was exhausted, she would not leave him.

Once when she had fallen asleep leaning over the side of his bed, Ali had called for Sol to come carry Sarah back to her room, but she had stirred when Sol had tried to pick her up, and she had shuffled back against Ali, refusing to go. Ali felt guilt grip his heart when she had then struggled to keep awake for many more hours instead of resting her body. Exhaustion lined her features, and even though she tried to hide it behind her smiles, Ali knew she was not well at all still. Her body, even though had always been slight, and lean, was now positively rake thin.

“Sarah, go rest, have something to eat. You need to look after yourself and our baby now, I am fine, more than fine and will be out of the hospital soon.”

“I know” she replied, stroking the hair away from his cheek “but I can’t leave you, my mind keeps playing over seeing you the first time after I awoke, you looked the closest thing to death I have ever seen and I can’t bear the thought of losing you.”

“You won’t my flower, but you need to rest and eat. Please little one, you have me so worried with how thin you have become, and Sol is also worried to death about you and the baby.”

“I will be fine when the nausea clears away, Sol tells me it should be soon, only another few weeks and the worst will be over” she told him, but Ali looking at how gaunt she had became, doubted that she would last another few weeks with how she was burning the candle at both ends.

When Sarah had gone into his bathroom to shower, Ali picked up his phone, and rang Sol.

‘Sol, you need to do something with Sarah, can you not see how she is running herself and the baby into the ground? There is no meat left on her body, she is all bones!”

Ali heard Sol sigh.

“I know brother; she has me worried as well. I have her on the maximum dosage of the medication that I can give her, and while she has managed to keep a little food down each day, she is being outstripped all that by the baby. She needs bed rest, but refuses to obey my orders as she cannot stand not being with you. I am considering having a bed brought to your room for her”

“Good idea, if she keeps going this way… well, I think you know what will happen” Ali replied, fear echoing in his voice. “Can you come, give her another talking to, in front of me. Order that bed brought in  for her. It might make her see differ”

Ali never got the sentence finished, when Sarah stumbled from the bathroom, white as a sheet and gripping her belly.

‘Ali… THE BABY!!” she screamed out as she sank to the ground, curling into a fetal position as she moaned in pain.

“Sol!” Ali cried out into the phone.

“I know... I heard, press the damn red emergency button near your bedhead, I am coming right over!” the phone call disconnected.

Ali threw the phone down, leaning over he hit the large red emergency button before sliding off the bed and down to Sarah’s side.

Sweat beaded on her brow as she panted. “It hurts!” she gasped as her eyes met his. “I think I am losing the baby” she sobbed, clutching his hands in hers.

Ali wrapped his arms around her shoulders, afraid to move her in case it did more damage.

Suddenly, the room filled with nurses and wards men, who pushed Ali back and hovered over Sarah.

Somewhere in all the noise and movement, she was placed on a gurney, and was whisked away from his sight. As they raced up the hallway with her, Sol came sliding to the front of his door, an empty wheelchair in his hands.

“Get in” he snapped as Ali positioned himself into the chair.

“What happened Ali?” he asked, becoming a little breathless as he ran behind the gurney, pushing Ali as he kept pace.

“She came out of the bathroom looking like a ghost, holding her belly and screaming about the baby. She said she is in a lot of pain, and thinks she is losing it” Ali said on a small trembling voice.

Sol swore. “Not I if can help it brother, not if I can help it” he reassured Ali, although he was not sure if he was saying it for Ali’s sake, or his own.

He could not stand the thought of Ali suffering the loss of his child and suffer as he had suffered all those years ago.

The wardsmen turned Sarah’s stretcher into the emergency room in the maternity wing, and slid her off the gurney and onto the examination bed.

Sol left Ali beside her as he rushed over to the basin, rolled up his sleeves, and began scrubbing the antiseptic wash all over his arms and hands.

“How you doing beautiful? Sol asked Sarah.

“It hurts” she gasped back at him.

“I know honey, just try and relax, deep breathe through it. Let me get ready, and we will see what is going on with that little one huh?”

Sarah just nodded, her eyes shut tight as she gritted her teeth and tried to breathe through the pain.

Ali stood up from his chair, then sat on the edge of her bed, holding her hand as he leant over and placed gentle butterfly kissed over her cheek.

“I’m here angel, it will be all right, you’ll see” he spoke to her in the softest voice, his warm breath brushing against her ear.

Sol walked back over, and was being helped into a green surgical scrubs overshirt, another nurse holding out a set of latex gloves for his hands as she helped him prepare to examine Sarah.

Once ready, he walked over to her, as the nurses gently rolled her onto her back as he folded back the sheet she was under, and lifted her robes exposing her belly to them.

Ali looked down as Sol uncovered her belly, and gasped at what he saw.

Sarah’s hipbones were jutting out sharply, painfully thin, but that was not the only shock he got. Her belly was positively huge.

Sol also raised an eyebrow. Then gently felt around the top of her bulging bump. “I am just feeling the fundus Sarah, the top of your uterus and the sides, it will give me an idea how big that baby is.”

Sarah panted as he did so, even though he was using gentle touches, he could feel her flinch as the touch worsened her pain.

“Ahh Sarah, are you positive of your dates?” he asked, looking at Ali with concern written all over his face.

“Positive” she gritted out between her clenched teeth.

“There is no mistake on our dates Sol, why, what is wrong?” Ali inquired.

“Her measurements are weeks ahead of what she would be if she were only 11 or so weeks.” Sol murmured, raising his eyebrow at his brother once more.

“Sol, I am not sure what you are implying, but Sarah was pure on our wedding night, she gifted me her virginity that night.” he spoke proudly.”

“Ok… then we have a major problem” Sol told Ali.

Sol lowered the sheet then looked Sarah in the eye.

“I need to examine you, like I did at the tent camp honey, I need to see if you are dilating or bleeding ok beautiful?”

Sarah nodded, and then drew her knees up for him and pulled off her panties.

Ali held his breath as Sol lent between her knees then reached under the sheet.

After a few seconds, Sol turned his head toward Ali.

“Well, her cervix is closed, so no dilation, which is fantastic.”

Withdrawing his hand and taking a quick look with his penlight underneath, he looked at Sarah.

“And no bleeding either” Sol smiled.

“So what is wrong?” Sarah asked, gripping the sheet as more pain racked her slight frame.

“I have my suspicions honey, have had for a while, but how about we take a look and see?” He smiled at her.

“Ok” she nodded.

Sol stood up then wheeled over the large ultrasound machine.

Taking the bottle of gel from the caddy on the side of the machine, Sol lifted up Sarah’s robes and pulled down the sheet so that her entire abdomen and belly were exposed, but she was still covered everywhere else for modesty.

Sol squirted a good measure of the clear gel onto her belly.

“Sorry if it is a little cold, I normally have it sitting in a jug of hot water to warm it, but this is kind of an emergency here” he smiled reassuringly at her.

Ali held Sarah’s hand as she trembled with nerves.

“It’s ok little one, no matter what it is, we will get through this together” then leaning down, he pressed a kiss to her quivering lips.

“Ok, let’s see what is making this baby so unhappy shall we?” Sol asked, as he placed the transducer over the gel on her abdomen, and moved it around.

Gray blurry images sprang up on the screen, as Sol clicked on a few buttons, adjusting the image.

“Here is your right ovary” he told her, as he pointed to the oval shaped image in the middle of the screen.

“And here is the left one… your cervix, it looks good, no bleeding evident internally and it looks nice and strongly closed”.

Sol then moved his hand a little, centering it right over the main swell of her bump.

“Oh boy” Sol breathed. “Well, I have found the problem, it is just what I thought all along” he spoke to them, and then looked over at Sarah, his face looking grim.

“What?” Sarah demanded, fear gripping her more each second.

Sol pointed to the screen “What do you see Sarah?”

Sarah looked at the blurry image. She had no idea what she was looking at, until she noticed the tiny flickering. “Is that the baby’s heart?” she asked, awed to see her own baby’s heart beating within her at this very second.

“Yes” Sol replied.

‘So what is the problem with it?” she demanded.

Sol pressed down on her belly slightly harder.

“This Sarah”

Sarah looked back at the screen, and then gasped, dropping Ali’s hand at what she saw.

There on the screen, was not one tiny flickering heart, but two.

“TWINS!” Ali gasped on a choked sob.

Sol nodded, but did not look happy at the prospect.

“This is why your condition has been so intensified Sarah, It is much more prevalent in multiple pregnancies.”

Sol then lifted the transducer off her belly, then looked her in the eye.

“Sarah, if you do not rest, nourish yourself properly and put your feet up, you WILL lose these babies, maybe even your own life trying to carry them with your body so emaciated. The pain you are suffering is called stretching ligament pain, and if you are not rested, as you have found out today it can be agonizing. Your body is growing and changing much more rapidly to accommodate these babies, much faster than with a single pregnancy. You need to ensure that you properly rest and relax if you are to carry to full term. 70% of multiple pregnancies do not make it to full term Sarah. This is serious!”

Sarah was speechless, her mouth ajar as she tried to comprehend what she had just saw, and been told.

“So, can you tell if they are both girls or boys yet?” Ali asked, his eyes wet and glistening with unshed tears as he stared at the swell of Sarah’s belly, his hand reaching out and brushing against the side of it.

“No, not for another few weeks yet, but I can tell you” he murmured as he placed the transducer back, and moved it until he found what he was searching for.

“They are not identical twins, they are fraternal. See the clearly outlined ring around each of the babies? They both have their own amniotic sacks, so you may end up with one of each or both the same sex.”

The tears did roll down Ali’s cheeks now as he looked at the tiny shapes on the screen. One seemed to jump, then wiggle.

“Is it… did it just move?” he asked in complete awe.

Sol chuckled “Yes it did, here I’ll make it easier to see” Sol increased the image until a tiny little arm could be made out, waving in front of a large round head.

Ali looked down at Sarah, who’s eyes were glued to the screen, her hand over her mouth as she could not take in that these tiny babies were inside of her.

Sol removed the transducer once more, then taking paper towels, he wiped away the gel from Sarah’s belly.

“Bedrest beautiful, until I deem that you are well enough to get up” he told her, waggling a finger at her as if she were a naughty child.

“I will even arrange for an extra bed to be moved into your room so that Ali here can rest on it beside you. Now that we know you have two babies draining your body, there is so much more risk to this pregnancy”

Sarah could only nod, and gasp once more as the pain still shot through her.

“I will give you a mild muscle relaxant, it will help ease the ligament pain you are suffering, but rest is the only cure. You must not let your body get this exhausted and worn out again. When your muscles get too tired, they cannot support your growing womb, so the pressure causes the immense pain you are experiencing now.”

Ali watched as Sol stepped away from them, went over to the medical supplies cupboard, drew a syringe of clear fluid, than came back. Rolling Sarah slightly to one side, Sol quickly injected the medicine into her hip.

“That should help with the pain, and let you rest.” He told her, and within a few minutes, not only did the pain fade away, Sarah felt her eyelids grow incredibly heavy. Unable to keep them open any longer, she gave in and drifted off to a dreamless sleep.
