I had a hard time opening my eyes. I sat up slowly and smiled.
“It was only a dream. Edward leaving me was only a dream.”
Relief almost washed through me, when I looked around. It hit me all over again. Everything he said, everything hit me like a Mac truck. Slowly I stood up and leaned against a tree. I looked at my watch and saw it was 7:45 p.m. Charlie will have been home for the last hour. I felt something vibrate in my pocket. It was my phone and I knew it was Charlie. I got it out of my pocket and answered.
-Where in the world are you Bells?-
I have to think of something and fast. Then I saw a caterpillar crawling up the tree I was leaning against.
-I’m out in the woods getting work done for biology. You know……just classifying some bugs.-
Geesh not even I even I bought that.
-Well……okay since it’s for school. I’m gonna order a pizza. Anything you want on it?-
-Uh…no. Just the usual.-
-Okay. The pizza should be here by the time you get home. See you in a little bit.-
-See you dad.-
He hung up and I out my phone back in my pocket. Now my only problem was getting the hell out of here before it got dark. Luckily Jacob taught me a few about how to get out of the woods. I was glad I caught in quick to what he taught me. It took me a little bit, but I was back in the meadow that Edward and me once shared. My knees started to shake. I had to get out here fast and get home before Charlie sent out a search party for me.
It was at least ten more minutes before I got to my truck. Luckily my backpack was in the front seat. This way when I came in with it, then he wouldn’t get suspicious. Getting into my truck I thought about the cold look in Edward’s eyes when he said he didn’t want me. I wanted nothing more than to have him back, but what was the point. He finally admitted I wasn’t good enough for him. I turned my truck on. Everything in me was trying to fall apart, but I had to maintain composure until I was able to get through dinner.
She was safe in her truck. More than ever I wanted to know what she was thinking. Whatever block she had in place was driving me insane. From the moment I saw her, her mind was the only I couldn’t ‘hear’. As far as all the guys in school were concerned, they made their thoughts known about Bella. Especially Mike Newton, his thoughts about her made me want to drain him dry. Only I wasn’t that kind of vampire. Animal blood was my preference. I could no longer hear her truck so I ran home. I almost turned back and went after her. I wanted to tell her I was sorry for telling her everything I did. Only I had to remain justified in my reasoning. The longer she was around me, around us, she was in danger. Not so much from Jasper. Alice saw that Jasper would never hurt Bella. Otherwise he would risk losing his life by my hand. She was more in danger because of me. She was my singer. Her blood called out to me like the most desired wine.
As soon as the house came into view, I stopped and walked. My family was out in front of our house watching the metal slides come down over the glass walls. This was it, we were leaving Forks and not coming back for a while. The only thing I could hope for was that Bella would be okay. I then felt a hand on my shoulder. It was Esme’s.
“Everything will be fine” she patted my shoulder.
I nodded my head and she left me and went over to stand next to Carlisle again. I turned to them as they formed a loose group.
“Well family we are leaving from here. Just like the other places, we need to leave to give this place a little time to change” stated Carlisle, “So Emmett grab our bags and lets go. I want to make it to Seattle in good time. We all know Esme has an exhibition to get to by tomorrow.”
I watched Emmett get our bags and put them into his jeep. Then they all got into their cars. The only vehicles going with us to Alaska were my Volvo, Emmett’s jeep, and Carlisle’s Mercedes. Rosealie didn’t want to take her convertible. She felt the weather would be too harsh on her car. So it was going to stay here in the garage that was also being shielded by the metal sidings. This was a small destraction for me. Esme’s art was being displayed in Seattle’s art museum. We were all proud of her. From Seattle we were making the drive to Juneau, Alaska. Before I got into my car, Carlisle approached me.
“Son, are you alright?” he asked me.
“Yeah,” I sighed “I was just thinking about a few things.”
“Bella will be fine. Don’t worry,” he said.
“I know” I said.
“Alright then let’s get going,” he said.
He patted me on the shoulder and then went to get in the car with Esme. I walked over to my car and got in. As soon as I closed the car door I was hit with the scent of Bella’s perfume. I remembered I still had the perfume sample in the center console.
“Dam it!” this was the last thing I needed. Sighing, I closed my eyes. Trying to forget about her was going to be more difficult than I thought.
So far I was managing to get through dinner. Luckily he didn’t ask me about my day, which I was more than thankful for.
“How are things with you and Edward?” he asked around a bite of pizza.
I should have seen that one coming. The moment his name came out my heart started pounding like it was going to come out of my chest. I could have lied out right and told him everything was fine. Instead I skirted around the truth.
“Well,” I was trying not to get emotional, “Things with me and Edward are over with.”
“Really?!” he said just a little to happily.
Ever since he met Edward he never liked him. He did like Jacob though. It took a little bit to convince my dad that there would never anything between me and Jacob. He was just a good friend who I had known since I was seven. He did after all imprint on my best friend Angela. I was more than happy for them.
“What happened between you two?” he asked me
“Well his family is leaving” I said, “Carlisle got in offer from a hospital in California. The long distance thing just wasn’t going to work.”
He shook his head “It’s sad that Forks lost one hell of a doctor. Don’t worry Bells, maybe with Edward leaving it’ll give you a chance to see what else it out there” he said.
He went back to eating. All I could do to keep from falling apart was just to stop thinking and eat.
As soon as he was done eating, he got up and went into the living room. I was still trying to hang on to my composure long enough to clean the kitchen.
Once it was done I ran upstairs to my room and closed the door. I leaned against it. Everything in me, everything that was me was involved with Edward. My composure finally let go and crumbled. Slowly I slid down to the floor. He was a part of me. He was a part of who I was. Alive or not, human or inhuman, real or mythical, Edward was my life. Now that part of my life was dead. I spent the rest of the night crying on the floor not wanting to go over to my bed. Not wanting the memory of him staying the night with me. My life, my soul, my heart, all of it, all of it was completely broken.
