Chapter 1
“Stop it!” I yelled. “Please!” He was uncontrollable, ruthless. “No more! Damnet! I said no more!” He finally stopped. “What’s wrong? What did I do wrong Claire? Shit. I’m so sorry. I didn’t mean to hurt you!” He looked at me. No actually he stared at me; His eyes darting back and forth from me and the bed sheets.
“Red. It’s all so red.” I was in shock.
“Claire! Oh my god, Claire. I’m sorry. I couldn’t control myself. I don’t—“
I stopped him there. I put my fingers to his lips. He needed to shut up. “Josh. We knew this would happen. We talked about it.” Josh and I had a long talk about a week ago. We talked about where and when. We obviously decided on my family cabin in Vermont.
“Shit Claire. I know. I just didn’t think it would be this bad.” He was frantic. He got up to get towels, and he must have been really out of his mind because he grabbed the white towels.
“Uhm, Josh.” I shot him a look. “Those towels are white.”
“Shit. Damnet. I’m so fucking sorry. I’ll go get the red towels. Those will work right?”
I rolled my eyes at him. “Josh,” I said to him while he was knocking things over in the bathroom, “use the towels under the sink. They’re pieces of shit.” I heard a few cabinet doors open and close.
I was still lying in the bed. I rolled to the other side so I wasn’t lying in my blood. That’s gross.
“Claire, I found the old towels you were talking about. You’re right, they are pieces of shit.” Josh chucked a little after saying that.
He likes to laugh at his own comments, even when he knows that they really weren’t all that funny. I love that about him. Its one of the many things I love about him. He cares about me in a way no one else does. He makes me feel like I am the only girl in the world. He hates when I get hurt. Once, when I hurt my back really bad, he came to my house and gave me a massage. Not one of those crappy three-minute massages, but an amazing thirty-minute massage with lotion and candles.
Another time, we got snowed in at my house. He came over as my parents were leaving for a seasonal party across town. I expected him to want to have sex with me. Of course he wanted to have sex. He didn’t though; although it was the perfect day for the first time we would do it together. He wasn’t a virgin and I was. Actually, not anymore. Anyways, when we were snowed in, he didn’t try to have sex with me. He told me to go upstairs, get into the comfiest clothes I could find and cuddle up under the covers. He came into my room with two mugs of hot chocolate and a DVD. He put the DVD into my TV. The song, Forever I will Love You by Center Lane, my favorite band, came on. Then a black screen, and in white cursive the screen read. “Claire, I love you.” Then it was me and Josh being videotaped at the school dance, then at the carnival, then at Christmas opening presents. He turned to me and kissed me on the cheek and told me this was how he really felt. It was the first time he told me that he loved me. We were dating for four months then. So perfect.
“Claire. Claire.” He repeated dragging out the ‘aire’ part. “Uhm, Claire? CLAIRE!”
“Oh! Yeah, sure. Wait, What?”
“Do you have the energy to get up, Claire? If not I’ll carry you.”
I started to get up.
“No. No, stupid question. I’ll carry you.”
He picked me up off the bed and carried me downstairs and put me, very gently, on to the couch. He put in my favorite movie, Matilda. He went back upstairs and started striping the sheets from my bed. I could tell because I heard him trip over the sheets and fall down. I laughed.
Josh then came running down the stairs with his arms filled with my white sheets. Actually, they’re red now.
“Claire,” he shouted from the laundry room, “where is the bleach?”
“Uhm, next to the washer. Wait, no, in the cabinet. Yeah, the cabinet.”
“Thanks’ bear.”
He calls me bear. Not Claire Bear, just bear.
“Hey Bear!” Josh said as he plopped down next to me on the couch. “Hey sweetie.” I replied with little enthusiasm. “Bear, do you feel alright?” He sounded so concerned. “Yeah. I’m fine. Well, I’m a little sore I guess, but it’s okay.” Josh stared at me, nodded, kissed me on the cheek and we watched Matilda.
The movie ended around 8 o’clock. I had fallen asleep around 7. Josh woke me up right when it ended.
“Bear, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to hurt you. I love you so much Claire. I pictured our first time to be,” he paused, “amazing, perfect, everything any girl could ask for and then some.” I think he started to cry a little because he started to separate his words with heavy breaths. I sat up and looked at him, and he seemed angry at himself. I went to speak, but he stopped me. He went on, “Claire,” another breath, “I wish I could say that you, breath, “were my first time.” Breath, “That way,” breath “I couldn’t have known better.” Breath, “I love you, Bear, and I’m sorry for hurting you.” He was really crying now. He held me so tight as I sat in his arms. I didn’t want to say anything, I let him get it all out.
About twenty-minutes after he spoke to me, he was asleep. I got up from the couch, showered, and went into the kitchen. It was almost 10 o’ clock and we had yet to eat dinner. My stomach growled. Yeah, dinner. I thought. I started to fool around in the kitchen. I dropped the pot about three times, but Josh remained asleep. I went into the pantry and found the Kraft Macaroni & Cheese; Josh and I eat it all the time.
As I was mixing the cheese, Josh came up behind me and put his arms around me with his hands lying on my waist line.
“Hi baby, I’m glad you’re finally awake.”
“Me too Bear. I see you made our favorite.”
“Just for you.”
“Aw! And I see you showered too!” Josh smelled my exposed shoulder. “You smell like honeysuckle. Awesome.”
“The Macaroni is almost done. Do you want anything else? I could put some ham in the oven. It’ll be another ten minutes though.”
“Bear, that would be awesome. I’m gonna shower real fast then I’ll be right back Bear. Don’t miss me too much.”
“Okay baby!” I smiled and kissed his cheek.
“You know, Claire, the reason I love seeing you is because each time I get to fall in love all over again.”
He turned around and started walking up the stairs.
