At sunset, after going for a bike ride, a ten year old Reed Anthony gritted his teeth nervously as he rode his bike home.

Mommy will be upset with me if I don’t get home in time for dinner, he thought, I wonder what she’s making… Maybe she’ll make turkey and stuffing for me! Or spaghetti and meatballs!

 What a whimsical boy.

“You hate me…don’t you, child?” said a voice in his head.

Ever since Ukaku sealed itself within him, the two had been able to telepathically communicate with one another. They were on relatively good terms, so Reed was surprised by its question, and used his bicycle brakes to stop.

“Huh? N-No, I don’t! I don’t hate you…”

Why did I ask him that?, thought Ukaku, He would never tell me the truth. He's not like those stupid kids who make fun of him and shun him because of my presence in his life. He has a heart. He’s a good kid who would never want to hurt anyone’s feelings…not even the feelings of a demon that sealed itself into his body to avoid bonding with a demon it didn’t like…

Reed did not know what to say, and Ukaku knew he did not, so he decided to move on to another subject, one he had been meaning to discuss with Reed for a while now.

“Can I tell you something? It’s important…”

“…Okay…” responded Reed, wondering what it was the spirit sealed within him could possibly want to tell him.

“I want to make you strong.”

“Strong?” asked Reed, confused by what the spirit meant.

“Do you remember what happened last week, when someone snuck into the house?”

Reed became sad when he remembered how someone had snuck into the Anthony household at night to kill him. Thankfully, his father had been there to protect him.

Reed lowered his head as his eyes filled with tears.

“Don’t cry, Reed…” said Ukaku, who now felt guilty that he had made this sweet, innocent child tear up, “It’s okay… I just wanted to tell you that I could make you strong enough to protect yourself from people like that.”

“R…Really?” asked Reed as he wiped his tears away.

“Yeah…” said Ukaku, “I can make sure you become strong enough to protect both you and Victor… What do you think? Is it okay if I make you strong?”

“Yes…” responded Reed, comforted by Ukaku’s offer, “It’s okay…”

Good, thought Ukaku, Now I can make his life easier…

“Can you make Victor strong, too?” asked Reed enthusiastically, “He has a spirit inside him, too.”

Ukaku hesitated before it spoke. “I don’t think I can, Reed,” it responded, “But that’s why you’re going to become strong enough to protect him too.”

Ah, man… I wish I could talk to him more about the situation with Victor, but…that conversation would destroy him. I can already see that Iemo is beginning to influence Victor. A few weeks ago, its influence caused Victor to bite Reed on his arm so fiercely, he now has a permanent scar…

I need to get Reed strong, and fast… Who knows what Iemo will do next…
