Chapter Eleven

?

As darkness quickly entrenched itself across the province, Father John Polsky was in his study sitting comfortably in an Edwardian era chair while readily smoking his favorite pipe. He casually thumbed through the pages of his well worn leather Bible until he came to a passage from the Old Testament. It was Psalms 27:14.

Wait on the Lord: be of good courage and He shall strengthen thine heart…

He then casually reached into his vest pocket to withdraw his pocket watch. 8:15 P.M.. It read.

Where are they? He worriedly wondered. They should’ve been back by now.

The Good Father placed the watch back into his pocket and took another long draw on the pipe, letting the bluish smoke swirl carelessly up into the air before damping out the tobacco with his thumb. He then set the pipe back in its holder perched upon the brown bianbi wood end table located next to the chair.

He closed the Bible and placed it on the end table as well, before slowly rising to retrieve his bamboo cane and make his way into the living room. He could still see the glow of the kerosene lamps he had Miss Chang place outside on the porch when it had first started to grow dark over a half hour ago.

Miss Chang was now upstairs drawing his bath, while Pia was finishing cleaning up the kitchen after another superb supper. Meanwhile, Carlton Chambers and Elizabeth Ander were yet to return from their picnic.

Damn him! Father Polsky angrily thought, He knows how dangerous it is out there after dark. It’s bad enough he places me and this entire Sanctuary in jeopardy with his requests, but now he’s putting our newest teacher’s life at risk as well! And I’m a damn fool myself for accepting his cash “donations” in the first place!

So as Father Polsky started to turn around to head upstairs to take his evening bath, the sudden sound of a backfiring engine just outside the main house indicated the Roadster had finally returned. Father Polsky let out a sigh of relief, as he made his way back to the front door, making a mental note to have a firm talk with Mr. Carlton Chambers as soon as it was appropriate.

But as he stepped out onto the porch to greet them, the first thing he noticed was Chambers hastily heading towards the house carrying an unconscious Elizabeth Ander in his arms. With her eyes tightly closed and her delicately pretty face now a ghostly pale, Elizabeth’s long brown locks limply strung down from her tilted head, as her arms and legs passively flopped about.

“My God!” Father Polsky immediately uttered, “What in the Hell happened?!”

“Elizabeth’s been shot!” was Chambers curt and desperate answer, as he pushed by the Good Father and on into the house. Father Polsky glanced over to the Roadster to see the smashed out windshield and bullet holes.

“Damn it, Carlton!!” Polsky scolded after Chambers, “I warned you to get her back before dark, didn’t I?!”

“Not now, John!!” Chambers scolded back, “Where’s Pia?!”

“He’s in the kitchen,” Father Polsky quickly replied, “Pia!!! Pia!! Get out here now!!”

Pia, with a quizzical look upon his face, poked his head around the kitchen entrance to see Chambers gently place Elizabeth down upon the oriental rug in the middle of the living room.

“Grab the medicine kit!” Chambers ordered, as Pia disappeared back into the kitchen to retrieve the kit. Meanwhile, all the commotion caught Miss Chang’s attention, as she hastily appeared at the top of the stairs.

“Miss Chang!” the Father called up, “Grab some fresh towels, straight away!!”

Miss Chang nodded and quickly headed back towards the upstairs linen closet, as Chambers gently cradled Elizabeth in his arms.

“Elizabeth, can you hear me? You’re going to be alright. Understand? You’re going to be alright,” Chambers whispered, in an effort to not only convince her but himself as well.

Elizabeth slightly moaned but still remained largely unresponsive. Meanwhile, Pia rapidly returned with a military style medical field kit.

“Mr. Chambers! Please step back!” he sternly ordered, while Father Polsky gently touched Chambers on his shoulder to signal him to stand aside.

Chambers tenderly released Elizabeth from his embrace but gently took a hold of her hand while Pia went to work.

Using surgical scissors from the kit, Pia cut away the soaked sections of Elizabeth’s bloodied blouse. Meanwhile, Miss Chang came down the stairs with an armload of towels, in which Pia used to soak up some of the blood from Elizabeth’s wound.

“Appears to be just one injury,” Pia announced, as he closely examined the bullet hole in Elizabeth’s side, “do not see fragments.”

“So it's a flesh wound?” Chambers anxiously asked.

“Yes. Seems bullet went straight through.”

“Well, that’s somewhat of a relief,” Father Polsky cautiously stated.

“But still, Miss has lost blood," Pia reminded, "and there is chance of infection.”

“But you can treat her, right?” Chambers nervously wondered.

“For now. But Miss needs Doctor.”

“Dr. Xiu is in Canton,” Father Polsky quickly noted.

“And that’s a one hour trip both ways,” Chambers replied.

“Miss may not have that much time if not properly treated,” Pia warned.

“I’ll get Lee and have him immediately deliver a message to Dr. Xiu,” Father Polsky said.

“No!” Chambers hastily countered, “It’s too dangerous right now for anyone to be out on the road!”

“Oh? So now you’re worried about the danger?” Father Polsky sarcastically pointed out.

“You can lecture me later, Father!” Chambers rudely returned, “But I don’t want to risk the lives of anyone else tonight. Pia, do everything you can for her. Understand?”

“Yes, Mr. Chambers. I do what I can.”

Suddenly, Miss Chang returned carrying a bowl of steaming water.

“This fresh boiling bath water,” she stated, “use to help clean wound!”

Pia nodded and took some towels and soaked them in the hot water before cleaning out the wounded area. Elizabeth softly moaned, as Pia opened a small bottle of rubbing alcohol from the kit to help further disinfect the injury, then took a packet of white powdered morphine and liberally sprinkled the substance directly upon the wounds to help dull the intense pain that Elizabeth was in. Then to help stop any further bleeding, he took gauze bandages and tenderly plugged up both the entrance and exit wounds and used medical tape to help keep the gauze securely in place.

“This is all I can do for Miss now,” Pia sadly reported.

“Need get her upstairs,” Miss Chang ordered.

“Yes, that is best,” Pia agreed, “gives Miss a chance to rest. But Miss still needs Doctor.”

Chambers realized that Pia was right. Elizabeth’s only chance for survival was to get Dr. Xiu over here as soon as possible. However, he still didn’t want to put anyone else in danger and knowing he was the only one to blame for this, he had to be the one to try and make it right.

“Father, I’ll take the Roadster myself into Canton to get Dr. Xiu,” Chambers stated, but as he looked over towards where Father Polsky had been standing, he quickly discovered that the Good Father had mysteriously disappeared.
