Chapter Twelve

?

Where in Hell did he go? Carlton Chambers wondered of Father Polsky, who just seconds before had mysteriously vanished from the Sanctuary’s main house living room. Chambers quickly turned to address Pia and Miss Chang.

“I’m going to Canton to get help. I’ll be back as soon as I can!”

Suddenly, the sound of a backfiring engine echoed from just outside the house.

“Seem Father Polsky already go for help,” Pia pointed out.

Chambers immediately ran to the front door to see the Roadster hastily pull out of the courtyard and down the incline to the main road before disappearing into the night.

“Damn it, John!!” Chambers mumbled to himself, “Now you’re the one who’s going to get himself killed.”

Chambers exasperatingly came back into the living room, as Elizabeth Ander remained on the floor unconscious and unresponsive.

“Have you not cause enough trouble for night?!” Miss Chang accusingly asked Chambers, “At least be useful and help get girl upstairs!”

Chambers humbly nodded, as he and Pia each took a hold of the oriental rug Elizabeth had been placed upon and, using it as a makeshift stretcher, carried her up the stairs as Miss Chang led the way.

Chang had already turned down the sheets on Elizabeth’s bed by the time they reached her room. Using the rug to lower her to the floor, they delicately lifted her up and gently placed her upon the bed. Elizabeth slightly moaned as Chambers sat on the edge of the bed and softly brushed her hair away from her face.

“You leave room now!” Miss Chang sternly ordered Chambers, “Let girl rest. You understand me?!”

“Miss Chang!” Chambers irritatingly replied, “I’m staying right here. Do you understand me?!”

Miss Chang scowled but did not retort.

“Uh, bandages need change every two hours,” Pia interrupted, “I will be back then. Meantime Mr. Chambers if you or Miss need anything, I am downstairs.”

Then as Pia and Miss Chang turned to leave, Chambers glanced back just before they exited and kindly said, “Thank you bothfor helping her.”

Pia smiled a toothless smile, while Miss Chang slightly nodded as they left the room.

Meanwhile, the Roadster raced along the rutted road, rushing through the dead of night with Father Polsky behind the wheel. Polsky inherently knew he was the only one who had a remote chance of successfully making it through any of the rebel checkpoints along the way and reaching Dr. Xiu in order to give Elizabeth Ander any likelihood of survival.

It wasn’t long before the Good Father spotted the bright flames of two bonfires up ahead. He kept the Roadster’s headlights on in order to let the rebel guards manning the post know someone was approaching. No need to surprise the already edgy sentinels. As he approached, Polsky shifted into lower gear and started to brake. He could now see three figures standing in the middle of the roadway, brightly illuminated by the Roadster's headlights. Two of those figures were holding rifles aimed threateningly his way.

Polsky then noticed Chamber’s silver, .45caliber 1911 style pistol laying next to him on the bench seat. He quickly grabbed the handgun and placed it inside his coat’s right pocket, as he heard the guards shout:

“HALT!! HALT!!”

Polsky brought the Roadster to a complete stop but left the engine idling. One of the rebel guards cautiously approached carrying a kerosene lamp, while the other two remained where they were with rifles at the ready.

Polsky could clearly see that the rebel guard who approached couldn’t of been more than sixteen or seventeen years of age. He may even had been a student back at the Sanctuary at one time in the not too distant past.

The Good Father knew that was the way it was over here. The very young, bored with working on the family farms, were recruited by the charismatic Warlords to join the revolution for a new life of opportunity and adventure protecting China’s thousands of years of culture and customs from being intruded upon by the “corporate bandits” from the outside world. And the irony of it all was the fact that most quickly forgot the noble cause that had brought them into the fold in the first place and soon became no more than bandits themselves, pillaging and killing their very own people along the way.

And though Father Polsky readily realized how young they were, he also understood how very ruthless they could be if given the chance.

As the young guard nervously approached the Roadster, he held up the lamp to be able to see inside the cab and who was behind the wheel. Polsky also knew not to make any sudden moves, but if things did start to take a turn for the worse he had no qualms about using Chamber’s gun.

He was familiar with guns. In his younger days he had loved to go quail and dove hunting and, up to a few years ago, still enjoyed perfecting his target shooting with Dr. Xiu out on a government range just outside Canton. So he was no rank amateur when it came to the use of firearms.

Polsky noted that the main guard did not appear to be carrying a weapon. The other two armed guards continued to stand directly in front of the Roadster, still bathed in the automobile's headlights. Since what was left of the guard rail lay splattered across the roadway (courtesy of Carlton Chambers earlier encounter, Polsky rightly surmised) the guards rigidly stood their ground in order to discourage him from trying to make a break for it. Polsky knew their seemingly lack of experience resulted in their first mistake and, as a result, offered him his first advantage. For instead of moving to the side, they remained in place, partially blinded by Roadster's bright beams. If he had to, he would attempt to take them out first. Then hopefully the main guard would be surprised just long enough for the Priest to bring him down as well. Polsky hoped it wouldn’t have to come to that tonight, but if it did he silently prayed God would guide his aim and make the other two guards miss.

Father Polsky also realized that the main guard had noticed the damage to the Roadster and immediately knew this was not their first encounter with this particular vehicle tonight.

“Get out of automobile!!” The main guard ordered.

Father Polsky knew one could not show any fear in dealing with these types, to do so would demonstrate a sign of weakness that would only beholden them to exert more power and control. So he answered commandingly.

“I will not get out of this automobile! I am on a mission of mercy and cannot waste any time tonight dealing with the likes of you!”

The main guard was immediately taken aback by the Good Father’s stringent response, then threateningly asked, “Where your destination and what your business there?!”

“Do you know who I am?” the Good Father continued with an air of righteous irritation, as he secretly slipped his hand into the coat pocket that contained Chamber’s gun and silently wrapped his hand around its handle while placing his index finger gently upon the trigger.

The young guard, even more surprised and perplexed by the Priest’s rejoin, remained silent. So Father Polsky repeated his inquiry.

“I asked you a question. Do you know who I am?”

The guard affirmed with a slight nod before apprehensively answering.

“You Priest from Sanctuary.”

“Then you do comprehend,” the Good Father continued, “that I personally know and have conducted business with your Warlord, do you not?”

The young guard nervously nodded once more.

“Then listen to me very carefully, my young friend. I am on my way into Canton and plan to make a return trip back to the Sanctuary in a few hours. If somehow I fail to arrive, you do realize what will happen to those responsible once your Warlord is informed of my disappearance?”

The young guard gulped nervously.

“So I strongly suggest,” Father Polsky concluded, “that you order your men to step aside and let me pass, then I’ll consider telling your Warlord the next time I see him how cooperative you’ve been. Understand?”

Without further comment, the young guard turned to his compatriots and ordered them to stand aside, in which they grudgingly complied. Father Polsky then gently released his hold on the gun and slid his hand out of his pocket to shift the Roadster into gear and slowly drove past the checkpoint; gaining speed as he continued his desperate journey towards Canton. As the glow of the bonfires receded into the background of the night, the Good Father finally breathed a temperate sigh of relief.

Meanwhile back at the Sanctuary, Chambers decided to let Elizabeth rest; so he took up residence on the wicker chair in the corner of her room. He tried to fight off his own exhaustion but felt it may be a loosing battle, as his eyelids began to become heavier and heavier. And just as he was about to drift off to an uneasy sleep, he heard Elizabeth loudly moan.

In an instant he was at her bedside. She was now attempting to open her eyes. Chambers reached out to gently caress her cheek.

“Elizabeth? Can you hear me?” he tepidly asked, not really expecting an answer, but she responded to his touch by gradually opening her eyes and slowly turning her head towards the sound of his voice.

“Carlton?” she weakly moaned.

“I’m right here, Elizabeth.”

“What….happened? Where...am...I?"

“You’ve been injured, but you’re going to be alright. You’re back in your room at the Sanctuary and Father Polsky is fetching Dr. Xiu as we speak.”

“Carlton?” Elizabeth mumbled, as she began to once again close her eyes.

“Stay with me, Elizabeth,” Chambers pleaded.

“Please…don’t…. leave…me,” Elizabeth managed to moan just before falling back into unconsciousness.

Chambers immediately took her into his arms.

“Don’t worry, my darling,” he lovingly whispered, as his eyes began to tear up, “I’ll never leave you. I promise.”
