Chapter Three

?

Ten jagged miles later, Elizabeth Ander finally arrived at her destination. She noted the sun was beginning to set behind the forest covered mountains that majestically sprouted across the distant horizon. Rays of sunshine peeked through the mountain cervices and one particular ray seemed to illuminate a weather trodden house that sat snugly off the crevice lathed road.

After what she had just been through, Elizabeth hoped this was a sign of good things to come.

Lee, the wagon’s driver, directed the horses to slowly pull off onto a sandy path that crookedly led to the front yard of the colonial style residence before bringing the wagon to a complete stop.

“And this, Miss Ander, is the Sanctuary Mission House,” Carlton Chambers cheerfully announced, “your new home.”

“It’s beautiful,” Elizabeth replied.

Lee quickly hopped down from the wagon with Elizabeth’s suitcase in hand, as Chambers swung the carriage door open and stepped out. He then turned and took a hold of Elizabeth’s hand to gently help her down.

Suddenly, a dozen children came running from behind the house and quickly surrounded Chambers and Elizabeth. She noted that all the children were dressed rather shabbily and their faces were smudged with dirt. However, their smiles still glistened in the fading light.

“Mr. Carlton!! Mr. Carlton!!” they all cried out with glee.

“Seems like you’re a very popular man around these parts, Mr. Chambers,” Elizabeth demurely noted.

Chambers nodded, “I think this has much more to do with my popularity than any of my natural charms.”

Chambers then reached into his coat pocket to produce a handful of mint candies, in which he then proceeded to distribute to the brood. Laughter echoed out into the approaching dusk, as the children eagerly nibbled on the delightful sweets.

“Spoiling our young ones again, Mr. Chambers?” someone amusingly called out from behind.

Elizabeth turned to see an elderly man, with thinning white hair dressed in a black frock, slowly approach. The man walked with a bamboo cane that helped steady a noticeable limp.

“I can’t disappoint my fans, Father,” Chambers laughed.

The man then turned to address Elizabeth. She noted he had a craggy but kind face.

“And you, of course, must be Elizabeth,” the man courteously addressed.

Elizabeth politely smiled and nodded.

“Oh, pardon my lack of manners,” Chambers hastily stated, as he handed out the last of the mints, “Miss Anders, this is Father John Polsky.”

Father Polsky reached out and tenderly shook Elizabeth’s hand.

“Welcome to the Sanctuary House, my dear,” the Father softly stated, “what we may lack in conveniences, we more than make up for in faith.”

“Thank you, Father,” Elizabeth replied, “it’s a pleasure to finally meet you.”

Father Polsky then turned to address the children, who had already finished their sweet meats.

“Now children,” the good Father spoke loudly in order to be heard over the rambunctious group, “this is Miss Ander, our new missionary. Remember what we rehearsed to make her feel welcome?”

The children immediately formed a single line and started to sing a song. Although Elizabeth noted they were slightly off key, they more than made up for it with enthusiasm. Elizabeth recognized the song. It was called ‘Look for the Silver Lining.’

Look for the silver lining

Whenever a cloud appears in the blue

Remember somewhere the sun is shining

So the right thing is to make it shine for you

A heart full of joy and gladness

Will always banish sadness and strife

So always look for the silver lining

And try to find the sunny side of life

Welcome, Miss Ander!!” the children then enthusiastically called out in unison after finishing the song.

“Thank you all so much,” Elizabeth said, as she eagerly clapped her hands in appreciation, “I’m so thrilled to be here and I’ve  been truly touched by your warm welcome.”

“And we are so thrilled you have finally arrived,” Father Polsky added, as Elizabeth noted two women, both dressed in black silk robes, were quickly approaching. One was a very young girl, her long dark hair braided halfway down her back. The other was an older woman. Her silver hair was sternly pulled back and wrapped in a swirling bun. While the young girl smiled sweetly, the older woman had a severe look upon her tanned yet still smooth face.

“Well, let’s get you settled in, Elizabeth,” Father Polsky began, “I’m sure you are tired from your long journey. I’ll have Miss Chang show you to your room.”

The Father then turned to address the stern looking woman.

“Miss Chang. Would you be so kind as to show Miss Ander where her living quarters will be?”

Without replying, Miss Chang walked over to Lee and rudely snatched Elizabeth’s suitcase from his hands.

“Come!” Miss Chang sternly addressed Elizabeth, as she hastily headed towards the house.

“Well, I guess that’s my cue to follow,” Elizabeth amusingly replied, before turning to Chambers, “Thank you, Mr. Chambers for the escort and for your assistance during the incident.”

“Incident?” Father Polsky inquired.

“We had a little run in with some Dragons,” Chambers calmly explained.

“Kiang, I presume,” the good Father knowingly replied, as Chambers nodded.

“I pray Sergeant Kiang didn’t upset you too much, Elizabeth,” Father Polsky asked with genuine concern.

“A little at first,” Elizabeth honestly answered, “but Mr. Chambers was a tremendous help in smoothing out the situation.”

“Very good,” the Father replied in relief, “may I thank you as well, Carlton for making sure our new missionary arrived safely.”

“The pleasure was all mine,” Chambers said, as he subtly winked at Elizabeth, causing her face to slightly blush.

Elizabeth was trying to muster up the courage to ask Chambers if he was planning to stay awhile longer. She remained very curious about this handsome stranger and wanted to get to know more about him, but before she could utter another word, Miss Chang once again cried out.

“Come! Now!!”

“Yes, ma’am,” Elizabeth answered, but just before she turned to follow Miss Chang, she asked Chambers, “will you be returning to the Sanctuary anytime soon?”

Chambers smiled mischievously, “Of course, Miss Ander. As now I have a very good reason to.”

Elizabeth inadvertently felt a coy smile spread across her face, but she quickly looked away. She didn’t want Carlton Chambers to once again see her blushing face.
