I looked up at the guys. They looked down on me. I didn’t know who they were. I backed up. They scared me. My daughter whimpered in my arms. I held her tighter to me. I backed up and hit a chair. I sat down. They both stopped once they were in front of me.
“who are you?” I asked.
“we are from the FBI.” One of them said.
“I didn’t ask where you came from. I asked who are you. I want names.” I said.
“My name is agent Castillo and that is agent Montague.” Agent Castillo said.
“Ok and what d you want with me? I didn’t do anything wrong.”
“We know you didn’t do anything wrong. We need to see the picture that you took.” Agent Montague said.
“Why do you need the picture?”
“Because we are trying to catch the guys that have been murdering people on holidays.”
“So they are serial killers?”
“How long have they been killing people? Why did they have to kill my friends and family? Why and I alive?”
“They’ve been killing people for a long time. They watch their victims for a while then strike. We don’t know why you’re still alive. Unless you know one of them.”
“I don’t think she knows them.” Officer Glover said.
“We are just checking.” Agent Castillo said.
“I don’t know them. I swear to GOD. Please help me.” I said.
“That’s what we’re here for.”
“What am I supposed to do now? I’m so scared.”
“You need to get out of the city.”
“How do you think I’m supposed to do that? They followed me here where there are police officers that have weapons. Like I said to the captain. They are just going to follow me. No matter where I go.”
“We’ll make sure you get out of the city safe.”
“If you think I’m going to leave alone without protection then you’re crazy.”
“We never said you weren’t going to have protection.”
“Then where am I going?”
“We yet have to figure that out.”
“How about I stay. I have a job to go to tomorrow. I’m the manager. I can’t miss a day of work.”
“Your can’t stay here. You’re going to call in sick.”
“Fine. Do you have any pictures I can look through to I.D the guys?”
“Yeah.” Agent Castillo said reaching into a briefcase. He pulls out an envelope. He hands it to me and steps back.
“So these are it?” I asked.
They nodded. I took a deep breath before taking the pictures out. The first picture was of the guy I took a picture of. I set that one aside. The next one wasn’t of any of the guys that killed any of my friends and family. I went to the next picture. I gasped. It couldn’t be. The picture was of my ex boyfriend. He was the father of Olivia. I dropped all the pictures. I stood up and backed away from the picture. The picture sat there on the floor looking at me. I started to shake my head no. over and over I chanted no.
“God please say this isn’t true.” I whispered.
“Do you know him?” Officer Glover asked.
“Yes. I know him.” I answered.
“Who is he?” Agent Montague asked.
“My ex boyfriend.”
“Do you know where he is?”
“No. I didn’t keep in touch with him after graduation.”
“Do you have any clue where he is?”
“No! I have no clue what so ever.”
“Brielle calm down.” Officer Glover said.
“How can I clam down? I just found out that my ex boyfriend killed my friends and family. Maybe he’s the one who wanted me alive so he could kill me and take Olivia. He wanted her. He wanted me too. But I broke it off with him.” I said.
“Why did you break if off with him?” Officer Glover asked.
“Because he was always cheating on me. He liked to hit me. I had enough so I left him. He didn’t seem to care until he heard that I was pregnant with his kid. Then he tried to get back together with me. But I said no. then I had Olivia, graduated high school, and moved out and got a job. I’m doing fine on my own.” I answered.
“Ok, so you haven’t seen him for a long time. Where does his parents live?”
“I don’t know if they still live in the same place. I think they moved. I don’t know. This is too much to take in.”
“I won’t question you until you’re ready.”
“Thanks this is very tiring.” I said looking at Olivia. She was fast asleep in my arms.
“Why don’t you stay in here and rest for a little bit. We’ll wait outside.”
“Can you stay in here with me? I don’t want to be alone.”
“No problem. Just lay in the couch and go to sleep.”
“Kay.” I said walking to the couch and lying down with Olivia. I closed my eyes and drifted off to sleep.
When I woke up I was covered with a blanket. I sat up and looked to where Olivia was sleeping. Only to realize that she wasn’t there. I sat up quickly. I looked around the office. But Officer Glover and Olivia were not around. I got off the couch and walked out of the captain’s office. I looked around the precinct. I saw Olivia and Officer Glover at his desk. There were some people around them. I could hear some of them say “Aww”. I walked over to them and peered between everybody. I saw Olivia blowing bubbles. I pushed past all of the people. Olivia smiled at me and kept blowing bubbles. I looked at Officer Glover. He was smiling. It was breath taking. He looked at me and the smile deepened, his eyes warmed up. The way he looked at me made my stomach fill up with butterflies. Color rushed to my cheeks. I looked away. I looked at Olivia who was now eating a donut. I looked around the precinct for the FBI agents. They were nowhere to be seen.
“Where are the FBI agents?” I asked
“They left. They’re going to call with a plan to get you guys out of the state.” Officer Glover said.
“What do you mean out of the state?”
“They want you in Washington D.C.”
“What about you?”
“I’m going with you guys.”
“Why are you going with us?”
“Because it’s my job to protect you.”
“Why do they want us in Washington D.C?”
“So they can give you a new identity. The FBI don’t want the people who killed your friends and family.”
“Are they going to change what I look like? If they are I would rather stay here and take my chances with the guys who killed my friends and family.”
“They wanted to ask you that. But you were asleep. I answered their question for you. I told them no that you wouldn’t want to change anything.”
“Thanks. I guess. So have they called yet?”
“No, not yet. But they will soon.”
I looked around the precinct. I looked down by Officer Glover’s feet and saw 2 duffle bags. I looked at him. He was watching my every move.
“What are those for?” I asked pointing at the duffle bags.
“I went over to your apartment while you and Olivia were sleeping and got you both some clothes.” Officer Glover said.
“Thanks. Do you have a shower here? Because I really need one.” I said.
“Yeah it’s in the locker room. The guys and the girl’s locker rooms are not separate. So some guys are most likely to come in and see you. They might walk in and look at you because you are a very beautiful girl.” Officer Glover said.
“They won’t come in if I have my daughter with me.”
“So I’ll show you to the locker room so you can have your shower. I’ll stand outside the door in case you need anything.” Officer Glover said standing up and grabbing both duffle bags. I followed him with Olivia walking beside me holding my hand. The walk from Officer Glover’s desk was very short. He wasn’t kidding when he said that both male and female locker rooms were shared. The locker room was big. If they blocked half off then there could be 2 locker rooms. But if this is what they want then ok.
Officer Glover showed me the showers and then left. I stood by a set of lockers looking at the door wishing he would come back in. but he didn’t so I just got undressed and I got Olivia undresses. I turned on the shower and got my hair and Olivia’s hair wet. I washed our hair and rinsed it. We finished taking our shower and dried off. I looked through both duffel bags for clothes. I found an outfit that my mother bought for Olivia. I put the outfit in her and told her to sit on a bench and don’t move. I looked through the duffle bags again. I found an outfit for me. I took it out of the duffel bag and a box fell out. I put my outfit on before I picked up the box. It was wrapped up in heart wrapping paper.
It didn’t say who it was from but it had my name on it. I didn’t know if I should open it or call Officer Glover. I put the box on the bench and looked through the duffle bags again to see if there was anything else. I found a note that had my name on it. I opened it up and it said,
I don’t know why you’re running from me. All I want is you and our daughter. None of this would have happened of you would have gotten back together with me. I really liked your family. If I want you then they are going to get in the way saying that I’m no good for you. But I think we were made for each other. So if you and Olivia come back to me no one else has to get hurt. So think about it. If you don’t want anybody else to get hurt then you should come back to me.
I refolded the note and put it next to the box. I grabbed Olivia and walked out of the locker room. Like Officer Glover said, he was standing outside the door. I pulled him inside the locker room and showed him the box and the note.
“Did you read the note?” Officer Glover asked.
“Yeah. What did you expect me to do? Just leave it in the duffel bag and go get you? It could have been from my mother or one of my friends. So of course I read it.” I answered.
“Stay here and give me Olivia.”
“Why? What are you going to do?”
“Stay calm. I’m going to have someone watch Olivia. Don’t touch the box.”
“Why does she need to leave? I don’t trust anybody with my daughter. I only have people who have children watch her.”
“One of the people I went to school with has kids. I can see if she can watch her for a moment.”
“I want to meet her first.”
“Ok let’s go.” Officer Glover said walking out of the locker room. We walked to a young women’s desk. She was a blonde. She turned around when she heard us coming. She smiled at Officer Glover.
“Can I ask you a question?” Officer Glover asked.
“Yeah sure.” She said looking at Officer Glover.
“Can you watch Olivia for a little bit?”
I’m guessing that what Officer Glover asked wasn’t what she expected. I think she wanted him to ask her out on a date tonight. She probably wanted to hook up with him. I gave her Olivia. She glared at me. I just smiled and said hi. We walked back to the locker room.
“Why did we have to give Olivia to her?” I asked.
“Because we don’t know what is in that box. If it’s something bad then I don’t want her in here.” Officer Glover answered.
“Officer Glover did you hook up with that blonde out there?”
“You can call me Josh. Not really. I took her out on a date and that was about it. Now she just wants to hook up. I don’t like her. I just felt bad for her because no one would talk to her. I didn’t do anything with her. I was just being nice. There’s nothing wrong with being nice.”
“I never said that being nice was wrong. You’re right there’s nothing wrong with being nice. Right now and the whole time that I’ve known you, you’ve been nothing but nice.”
“I’m trying to be nice and not say anything that would make you leave.”
“I don’t think it’s wise to tell you. You would probably smack me and walk out of this precinct.”
“Ok. But you promise that you will tell me.”
“Yeah, ok let’s open this box and see what’s in it.”
I grabbed the box and slowly tore off the heart wrapping paper. I opened the lid and saw a ring. I showed Josh. I knew who it was from. Toby proposed to me when I was pregnant with Olivia. He used this same exact ring. I closed the lid and set it down. He wasn’t kidding. He really wanted me back.
“Do you know who gave you this?” Josh asked.
“Yeah. My ex-boyfriend Toby. When he found out that I was pregnant with Olivia he bought this ring and proposed to me. I rejected him. He got angry and said that he will have me one way or another. He said he would kill to have me. I thought he was lying. I guess he wasn’t. In the note he wrote me said if I didn’t go back to him, he would keep on killing. He told me to think about going back to him.”
“Don’t worry we’ll catch them. I won’t let them harm you.”
“I have a plan.”
“What’s your plan?”
“We can act like me and Olivia died.”
“We could call the FBI and see if that’ll work.”
“Well then let’s go.” I said rushing him out of the locker room. I walked over to the blonde’s desk and took my daughter from her. I walked over to Josh’s desk. He was on the phone. I’m guessing with the FBI. He was telling them my plan. Josh nodded and smiled.
“That’s great. We’ll start right away. Yeah we can be there by 4.” Josh said.
“What’s going on?” I asked.
“Yup. Ok, bye.” Josh said hanging up the phone.
“What’s going on?” I asked again.
“Are you ready to die?” Josh asked with a grin on his face.
“Yeah when are we going to do it?” I asked smiling.
“As soon as possible. We are to call the paramedics and tell them what’s happening.”
“So how are we going to pull this off?”
“Umm we’ll have to find that out.”
“Doesn’t the hospital have a shot that can make you heart beat slow and make it look like you died?”
“Probably. We’ll have to have the FBI call and see.” Josh said picking up the phone and called the FBI again.
I sat in his chair behind his desk. He looked at me and shook his head. I smiled. I looked at Olivia. Her dark brown curls were pulled back in a poney tail. I’m guessing the blonde did it. I saw a flashing red light in the hair tie. I grabbed a pair of scissors and had to cut the hair tie out. She looked back at me. I wasn’t paying attention. I looked at the hair tie closely. I looked up from the hair tie. Josh was looking at me.
“What’s wrong?” josh asked.
“There’s something in this hair tie that is blinking red. I think it’s a tracking device.” I answered.
“Why do you think that?”
“What you don’t see the blinking red light? It has to be a tracking device. I’ve watched enough CSI shows to know what this is. You’re a cop. You’re supposed to know this stuff.”
“I do. I just don’t think that there’s a tracking device in it.”
“Do you have someone who works on computer and other stuff?”
“We are going to take this to them. I’m gonna prove to you that I’m right.”
“Ok but you’re going to be wrong.”
“I have 2 rules. The first, I’m always right no matter what. The second if I’m wrong then you go back to the first rule. So no matter what I say I’m always right. I know I’m right.”
“Ok then let’s go if you want to prove to me that you’re right.”
He led me down a hall. The hall had labs and other rooms that are needed for police work. Josh stopped at a door and opened it. A young guy with dark auburn hair and green eyes looked up from what he was doing. When he saw me he smiled.
“What can I do for you today?” the guy asked.
“We need you to look at this hair tie. I believe that there is a tracking device in it. Officer Glover doesn’t think so.” I answered handing the hair tie to him. He grabbed it making his hand brush mine.
“Well let’s see what we got here.” He said looking at it closely. He took something and cut the hair tie open. He took the blinking device out of it. He put it under a microscope to get a better look at it. He looked up and smiled.
“This little device here is indeed a tracking device. You’re young lady was right. Now how did you have a tracking device in a hair tie?” The guy asked.
“It was in my daughter’s hair. I noticed it after we let one of Officer Glover’s friends that he graduated with watch her for a moment. OH MY GOD!! I think she’s working with the murderers!” I said.
I walked out of the lab and almost ran down the hall. I heard Josh follow after me. When I got back to his desk I looked around and couldn’t find the blonde. I couldn’t find her. I twirled in a circle trying to find her. Josh stopped me. He looked into my eyes.
“Calm down. I’m going to get you and Olivia out of here. She doesn’t know what going on I swear to it.” Josh said calmly.
“She might. You don’t know Toby like I do. He’ll do anything to get what he wants. He’ll do anything to have me.” I snapped.
“I’m going to call the hospital from my cell. They won’t have that bugged.” Josh said taking out his cell phone. He dialed the number to the hospital. He explained the problem. He asked them if they had something that can make it look like someone died. They did. They are going to send it with the ambulance. So this is the start of the plan.
