In Case Of Lightning
Chapter 12: A Place By The Sea.

The following week on set turned out to be an exercise in frustration.

Another beach scene was delayed on Monday due to bad weather. By Wednesday it seemed half the crew were sniffling from colds of varying severity while the other half were outright irritable from having to deal with the delays being caused by a range of things, the complaints from the sick crew being just one of the problems.

So by the time Saturday came around, Lari was relieved beyond belief that Cooper had only a half day on set. Stepping outside the Bach, she paused to quickly check her bag for the folder she’d returned to collect. Satisfied once her fingers had brushed over the cardboard file in her bag, Lari locked the door and headed quickly down the stairs.

She drove the short distance back to the set automatically now; more preoccupied by the things she wanted to get done by the time Cooper finished filming. They’d established a very firm pattern over the last few weeks; Lari crammed all her work into the (extensive) hours that Cooper was actually filming for. It suited them both because they could both do absolutely nothing when there was no filming and Lari wasn’t typing away on her laptop at random hours of the night. It worked.

Frowning, Lari saw the small crowd at the gates to the set early enough that she decided to park further away than they usually did. She grabbed her bag and locked the car, a little disappointed that they didn’t leave in those few seconds. Because with their cameras and other equipment, it was entirely too obvious who they were.

Deliberately approaching with a neutral expression, Lari was half prepared when she suddenly became the centre of attention. What she wasn’t prepared for was for the first of the paparazzi to take a look at her face and bellow, ‘Cooper’s girlfriend,’ which caused a mass flurry of excitement.

Blinking, Lari tried to shuffle through the crowd unobtrusively as they all converged on her, some of the cameras flashing – probably just in case. She doubted they actually knew who she was – or in this case, wasn’t.

‘This way! Look this way!’

‘Is it true that you are in relationship with Cooper?’

‘What can you tell as about the film?’

‘Over here!’

Joe, the security guard, turned out to be her saving grace. Taking her arm, he used his body as a shield to get Lari through the crowd. ‘Thanks, Joe,’ Lari murmured and he gave a grunt of acknowledgement.

Escaping to the safety of the set, Lari hurried away while the voices floated after her, all wanting to know who she was. By the time she reached the office and had dealt with the necessary paperwork, some of her discomfort had passed and she was just left irritated.

So when Cooper found her on one of his short breaks, Lari wasn’t in the best of moods. He glanced at her face and immediately grinned. ‘Are you missing me that badly?’ he asked.

Lari instinctively looked around and saw no one within hearing distance. ‘Don’t even think of tormenting me today,’ she warned him mutinously. ‘I just got mobbed by photographers on my way back here.’

Cooper laughed. He actually laughed. ‘I believe Mel did warn you about the vultures.’

‘That wasn’t in the least bit sympathetic,’ Lari complained although some of her bad mood did ease.

He grinned at her. ‘I’m so sincerely sorry, beautiful Larissa, that I am just so insanely amazing that the press cannot get enough of me. That you were harassed by them is simply unforgivable and for that, I can only offer you the left side of my bed tonight.’

‘Oh my god,’ she breathed. ‘Does your neck get tired from supporting that big head of yours?’ she asked, shaking her own head in amazement.

‘It’s supported by my ridiculously well built body,’ Cooper informed her seriously.

‘Ah,’ Lari replied. ‘It must be a hidden talent of yours.’ As soon as the words left her mouth, Lari knew she’d made a big mistake.

Amusement flared in Cooper’s eyes as well as the light of determination. ‘I have other talents too,’ he told her, his voice dropping a register and making Lari glance away. ‘Perhaps I can show you sometime.’

Her eyes shot back to his face. ‘Cooper—’

‘We’re shooting in ten,’ a voice suddenly called over to them and they both looked around, Lari jumping in surprise as the voice broke into the little bubble of tension that surrounded them. Cooper nodded at the crew member before turning back to grin at Lari’s flushed face.

Lari sighed and just waved a hand at him like she was shooing a fly. ‘Go... act,’ she told him while she shook her head.

Cooper laughed. ‘As you wish, my hard-hearted Lorelei.’

Lari stared after him in complete bemusement. Lorelei? The siren that reportedly lured sailors to shipwreck along the banks of the Rhine? How... odd.

Firmly pushing Cooper from her mind, Lari tried to focus on replying to a bunch of emails but she found herself logging into her personal account. Her heart twisted when she saw another email from Sam, her uncle’s secretary.

It was a brief email and very to the point. Uncle James was doing much better and has agreed (thanks to the persistent nagging of everyone around him) to take two weeks holidays.

“Right now, he should be on his way to the Maldives,” Sam added.

Exhaling in relief, Lari felt a huge weight lift from her chest. She took a moment to just bathe in relief before quickly typing a reply to Sam’s email and sending it off. It was good that James was finally going on a holiday. It was probably time he stopped worrying the entire family and took care of himself for once.

Sighing, Lari shook her head and decided that it was finally time to reply to Mel’s enquiries. In the end, Lari didn’t say much. She told Mel that yes, they’d slept in the same bed last night but there was nothing else to it.

Mel replied almost immediately, scolding Lari for lying so blatantly and begging for details.

Lari laughed and wrinkled her nose as she thought about what to say. While she was debating, an icon popped up on her screen, announcing the arrival of another message. Smiling, Lari’s opened Mel’s new email.

Laughing quietly, Lari logged out of her email account, knowing that Mel would kill her but unable to resist tormenting her just that little bit. That’s what friends did, after all.

After that, the rest of the morning passed fairly normally and by mid afternoon Cooper and Lari were arriving back at their accommodation. Lari bypassed the coffee altogether in favour of collapsing onto the sofa as Cooper sauntered in after her.

‘Ugh,’ she complained, rubbing her face. ‘Those photographers never quit,’ she murmured. They’d been waiting for them as they left. Lari had been mortified when they’d asked Cooper the same questions they’d asked her.

“Cooper, is this your girlfriend?” one particularly loud voice had called.

Cooper’s response? To smile and reply that he didn’t talk about his personal life. Damn him.

‘I almost feel sorry for laughing at you earlier,’ Cooper informed her as he quickly lifted her lower legs and slid under them so her legs were draped over his lap. Lari didn’t even bother arguing, she was that tired.

‘I’m sure you are,’ she replied dryly.

He laughed. ‘Don’t you believe me?’ he asked innocently.

‘Not a bit,’ she replied. ‘You’re a seasoned veteran in dealing with the press. You knew exactly what was waiting for us at the gate.’ Lari shook her head. ‘I still can’t believe how well you deal with all these people shouting your name and demanding answers from you.’

Cooper shrugged. ‘They can ask all they like. It’s my decision whether I answer them or not.’

‘Yeah but it’s still impressive at the same time. When they were all shouting at me I had no idea what to do,’ Lari mused, a little piqued by this fact.

But Cooper was just grinning at her as he quirked an eyebrow. ‘Do I impress you, Larissa?’

She returned his gave levelly. ‘You’re okay,’ she told him.

Cooper laughed. ‘One day you won’t be so mean to me.’

Lari couldn’t help but smile. ‘Mean? Cooper, I’m doing you a favour by beating down that ego of yours. It’s a public service, really.’

He smiled too. ‘Just so long as you’re prepared to deal with the consequences.’

Her eyes narrowed on his face. ‘What conseque—’ She suddenly shrieked as she was scooped up into Cooper’s arms and he got to his feet. ‘Oh, don’t you dare!’ she hissed, remembering the incident where he’d threatened to throw her off the balcony. He hadn’t, but still.

Cooper laughed, his eyes alight with amusement. ‘Are you going to say sorry?’

Lari’s eyebrow pulled together and her lips set mutinously. ‘No.’

The corners of his mouth lifted that little bit further. ‘No?’

She shook her head resolutely. ‘No. You deserved it.’

Her eyes locked on Cooper’s, Lari tried to convince herself that Cooper wouldn’t actually do anything mean to her. That she could convince him to put her back down on her feet. If she could only convince him...

As easily as that, the light bulb flickered on in Lari’s mind and it took every shred of self control she had not to smirk. Biting her lip instead, Lari watched as Cooper’s eyes went immediately to her mouth. When he lifted his eyes back to her own eyes a moment later, Lari hesitated only briefly before lifting her mouth to his and kissing him.

The problem with any plan, really, was that sometimes the result was not what the person expected. In this case, it was dangerous to ever really expect a particular response from Cooper.

So Lari was surprised when Cooper didn’t immediately kiss her back. He didn’t exactly reject her kiss but he didn’t return it. It was the first time Lari realised just how soft his lips could be. When he’d kissed her before, his lips had been the more assertive, dominant of the pair. Now, she could only feel the softness and the heat of them.

Pulling back a little to meet his curious eyes, Lari blurted out exactly what was running through her mind. ‘You don’t want me to kiss you,’ she murmured and it wasn’t completely a question or a statement.

Cooper gave a startled laugh. ‘Don’t I?’

Lari glanced away, her eyebrows pulling together. ‘But you...’

Cooper abruptly took a step back and sank slowly back onto the sofa, Lari still in his arms. He loosened his grip so that his arms were still around her but she could if easily moved away, if she wanted. ‘Do you want to kiss me?’ he asked simply.

Lari stared at him, realising that the game was definitely over. She was very busted. She was busted and it left her in an odd predicament. ‘Cooper...’ she said slowly, trying to find a way to phrase her argument. He just didn’t seem to get that this thing, whatever it was, could never work between them. Sure, she’d kissed him before but she’d been playing. Just because his mouth felt like heaven against hers didn’t make it any wiser for them to carry on the way they were. Eventually, this thing between them was doomed to failure.

Cooper sighed. ‘You know, I’m not asking you if you want to move in with me and have a dozen kids, Larissa,’ he said, cupping her face with his hands. ‘I’m asking you,’ he continued, a small smile pulling at that lovely mouth of his, ‘if you want to kiss me?’

Staring into those blue eyes of his, Lari couldn’t be anything but honest. ‘Yes,’ she admitted.

Cooper smiled and his hands left her face to encircle her waist. ‘Okay.’

Lari blinked. Okay? ‘That’s it?’ she blurted out. ‘Okay?’

Cooper laughed. ‘That’s all I wanted to know.’

Frowning at him, Lari decided she could have happily hit him over the head. She had just made a confession which, for her, was groundbreaking and all he could say was okay?

He smoothed her forehead with the palm of one hand. ‘Stop frowning at me,’ he told her. ‘What are you so upset about?’

Lari bit her lip as she tried to sort through the jumble of emotions inside her. Eventually, she just shook her head. ‘Do you want to kiss me?’ she asked, surprising herself.

Cooper wasn’t surprised. His hand slid around her neck and pulled her closer. ‘Yes,’ he breathed a moment before his mouth met hers.

Without thinking, Lari snaked her hands up to link behind Cooper’s neck as she kissed him back with everything she had. Cooper made a sound deep in his throat as one hand threaded through her hair, the other arm wrapping tighter around her waist and pulling her closer to him.

Lari gasped, relishing the feel of his mouth against hers. Cooper could kiss like no one else, she imagined. Which was probably why a few minutes later found Lari still wrapped up in Cooper, her knees on either side of his hips as they kissed like it was going out of fashion. She couldn’t even remember moving to get this close to him but here she was.

It was Lari who broke the kiss, breathing shakily as she dropped her head to Cooper’s shoulder. He laughed softly, his hands stroking her back slowly, tracing circles and random patterns.

‘I guess,’ he said after a moment, ‘that we’ve definitely established we enjoy kissing each other.’

Her head still against his shoulder and her eyes closed, Lari couldn’t prevent the smile that spread against her face as she buried her face further into the curve of his neck. ‘Mmm,’ she murmured. ‘I think I actually agree with you for once.’

Cooper laughed outright, cupping her face with his hands so that he could look her in the eye. ‘This is progress, sweet Larissa. One day—’

‘One day you’ll make me fall for you?’ Lari questioned, a small smile playing at the edges of her mouth. ‘I hate to tell you this, Cooper, but I’m not one of those people who believe in true love and happily forever after.’

Cooper made a reproving sound. ‘You’re too beautiful to be such a cynic,’ he told her.

‘And you’re too much of a flatterer for me to take your comments seriously,’ she replied, getting to her feet.

‘Maybe you’re just scared I mean it,’ Cooper told her, the smile on his face setting Lari at ease.

She smiled back at him. ‘Cooper, if you are prepared to believe the words that come out of your mouth than I’m prepared to believe that we’re going to be madly in love until our dying day.’

Cooper watched her curiously for a moment before a grin slowly spread across his face. ‘I’m thinking a place by the ocean.’

Lari blinked. ‘What?’

His grin widened. ‘I’ve always wanted to retire to a place by the sea. You know, spend my days making abstract artwork and wandering along the edge of water—’

‘Ugh,’ Lari fumed, turning on her heel and heading for the doorway. He was just impossible to argue with! His laughter followed her out the doorway as she headed for the kitchen. One day, she would get through to Cooper that they were never going to be together. Never ever. The sooner he understood that the better because the more time that passed, the harder it was for Lari to convince herself that he was wrong.

Rachel Lauren

Okay. . . So, I am offically caught up, and I apoligize for taking so long. I just always put off reading stories from my favorite writers in fear that I'll end up hating it. I'm just weird. But I love this story! Though, I do miss Chase so dearly, Cooper does make a fine subsitute. And the sooner Larissa realizes that she loves Cooper the better. People in romance novels tend to be so stupid sometimes. So, I am still very unhappy with you at the moment for not posting practically everyday like you used to. Sure, you have things to do, and I understand that, but the other writers on here, that I actually like, are being so damn slow that it's pissing me off. And it's really bad timing because my favorite authors' books aren't coming out until 2011! UGH! I think I just might cry! Though I am reading, and loving, City of Bones, even though I accidentally read a part of the epilogue. So. . . enough rambling from me. I love the story and I hope you post soon before I go insane with mad cow disease, which I have no clue how I can possibly get. Hang out with cows? Are there even any cows in Michigan? I've seen some horses near Gaylord, but no cows. Feilds of corn, but no cows. Instead, I'll just get hit by a bus. That seems easier to achieve. I hope you post soon, BYE!

Wed, September 1st, 2010 6:22pm

Ahhh those were the golden days when I was able to update so often. It kind of sucks being in my last semester of uni because if I get behind, it would mean I've screwed up 3 years worth of study and assessments. So if I can't update so frequently I'm sorry but there's just not a lot I can do about it. Not until the end of the year, anyway :)

And are there cows in Michigan? I have absolutely no idea lol.

Cooper, marry me. The end.

Seriously, he's so adorable and I usually don't go for guys who spew out "beautiful" and nicknames a lot so he's a lucky exception :P

Wed, September 1st, 2010 7:36pm

Haha maybe it's because Cooper uses those nicknames more to torment her? lol.
