After four gruesome hours of not being able to stand up for more than five seconds, I was ready to go in and sleep the failure away. My arms were cramping up awfully and I had a terrible surf rash on my thighs. I didn't know that you had to wax the board to stay on, so I was slipping every two seconds and didn't even manage to get a miniscule 40 yards out. Atleast I got a good tan on my back. The saltwater that was irritating my eyes seemed to get more and more salty and irritating as the sun got hotter and hotter on my skin. The waves were harsh to my beginner skill level and I felt like I got myself into a huge mess. I just wanted to stand up one time and catch one good wave. Just once.

On the other hand, tGrayson guy kept catching every wave the ocean gave him and he breezed through it like it was as simple as walking. He was a true profressional when it came to surfing.

Sometimes I would sit on my board when he caught a wave and watch him stand so casually and smile to himself. It looked like he really loved it and I feel bad for thinking he was a poser who didn't know what he was talking about because watching him was all the proof I needed. He was awesome.

When I was ready to go in, I came to know that as far as you paddle out in the beginning, is as far as you have to paddle back when all you want to do is sleep. I let the waves wash me in and I unhooked my board leash slowly, not feeling like doing anything anymore. Grayson had come in about 15 minutes earlier than I, laying on his board, hands behind his head and a relaxed expression on his tan, chiseled face. It's hard to have anger for someone that gorgeous. 'Don't think like that, he's a jerk!', I thought to myself angrily.

I stopped in front of him and sat beside his head. He didn't seem to notice I was there. I decided to confront him.

"Grayson, I'm so-" He stopped me by sitting up. I looked at him confused and he gave me a small, half-hearted smile. He began to apologize:

"About earlier...I'm sorry that I looked over at the window. I didn't realize you were getting undressed and I was embarrassed that you saw me see you. I promise there's no need for you to beat me up, Leilaniwill give me enough hell if she hears about this." He blushed just thinking about it.

"Truthfully, I've known your kine was coming out, but I didn't know you were coming today. Monie told me that I could surf on her turf anytime so I can train for my competitions this summer. And I didn't think that you would find that it was weird that some unknown guy was on Monie's property...in fact, to make it up to you, I'd like to teach you how to surf." He smiled hopefully at me, revealing straight, white teeth that looked like they would glow in the dark. All of the sudden, I felt his pity for me accelerate. Hell no. I will not have some guy that I don't know, treat me like a baby.

I crossed my arms stubbornly and replied.

"Look, I don't want to be here. This isn't exactly my summer vacation and I just want to go home. I don't want to learn how to surf. I just want to find my place at Hanalei and get back to Manhattan as soon as possible. I appreciate your apology, but I can't take your offer. Sorry." He ran his fingers through his hair and sighed.

"Okay. I rhink I can learn to respect that. Maybe...hopefully we'll become friends." I snorted loudly. The smile on his face slithered away and he frowned. 'That's right! You won't treat me like an infidel, Grayson Howard', I thought.

"As if. The likes of you are pathetic." I snapped. I stood up and made my way to the shed. I heard him get up and drag his feet to the tree he originally propped his board at.

Did I just make a good decision or the worst mistake of the summer?

Monie came home at around 7, with 3 overflowing coolers of leis and some local restaurant named Zippy's fried chicken. I could hear her Jeep pull up through the thin walls. I trotted out to the front of the house and helped Monie unload her coolers. "Mahalo, Cass!" She cooed. Monie used her childhood nickname for me and I smiled to myself as I walked up the creaky porch steps behind Monie's fast paced body. I followed her lead into the large kitchen and sat down at one of the barstools. Monie turned to the fridge and pulled out cheese and butter. She got out some bread and Campbell's tomato soup from the pantry. She remembered my favorite meal from when I was just a child.

She noticed me watching her and she chuckled. "I got a ring from my niece, Leilani today. She's a year or two older than you...ho, she's about to go off to college this fall at Oregon. She told me that you met her boyfriend today. I just adore Grayson! I've been treating him like blood since his family died in a plane crash. I guess you ran into him at the beach?" My jaw dropped to the floor. His entire family is dead? He has a girlfriend?! No wonder he was apologizing. And to think I thought he wanted to be/get with me. "Monie, can I ask you something?" She nodded warmly. "How did his whole family die but he didn't?"

Monie took a deep breath. "Grayson has been pro since he was about 12 years old. He is such an amazing surfer. But it came with a cost. He always had to sacrifice very important milestones to train and compete. I remember one year, the poor keiki couldn't go to his own birthday party because he needed to practice surfing pipelines. Last year, his family was going to see their extended family for Thanksgiving on Molokai and Grayson couldn't go because the Quiksilver qualifiers were on the same weekend as the reunion dinner. I remember it was raining that night and Grayson came running in from the surf shed and asked if he could crash here for the night. I agreed. He was such a sweet boy and I let him sleep in your mother's room." Monie caught her breath, and choked on a small cry before continuing.

"The planes that serve flights between here and Molokai are small passenger planes and the turbulence is awful, especially during a storm. Grayson's family was on a plane that got caught up in the storm and the plane gave out. He doesn't have any immediate family anymore. The poor boy lives in the house all alone next door. Ever since, I'm the closest thing to family the boy has got. Be nice to him, Cass. He's been through so much and he believes that if he hadn't skipped out on Thanksgiving to train for the surfpro , it wouldn't of happened." She wiped a couple tears from her leathery skin and frowned.

I sat there in shock. And to think I had been so mean to him! I felt awful and I just wanted to see him right now and apologize. But what if he thinks I'm being nice out of pity? That's exactly what I didn't want.

Monie saw my face and smiled sadly. "Don't worry, braddah. He is feeling a little less remorse. Anyway, Leilani said that you should come to the surf competition tomorrow to help her cheer Grayson on." I nodded. After what I put him through, he deserved it.

*Author's Note: The pidgin is REALLY picking up now so let me fill you in: Ho doesn't mean slut it's more like wow or whoa. Da kine means whatchamacallit or thingymabobber. Braddah and brah mean bro, dude, man, girl, friend. Mo means more. Bettah means better. Howzit is look at that or what's up or how are you. Keiki means children or child. A lei is a flower necklace. There are 8 Hawaiian Islands and Molokai, Oahu, Maui, Lanai, Big Island, Kaua'i, Niihau, & Kahoolawe are the 8. Oahu is where the capital is & Big Island is where Kona Coffee comes from. Anymore pidgin that confuses you? Just ask :)*
