They were sipping the evening tea and talking casually. The topics centered on weather or Bangalore city, in general. Farhan was observing her meticulously and avoiding anything related to her mysterious arrival in the city. But he wanted her to speak.

She was asking very casually, ‘’so, where are you working now?’’

‘’I’m working with Simplify Financials.’’ He said,’’ As the Transition Manager for credit underwriting processes in India.’’

‘’Oh that’s a great company to work for.’’ Jhelum said, ‘’and what about your consulting business? ‘’

‘’Yep, it’s on. As usual,’’ Farhan put aside his cup on the hand railing. ‘’what about you? Wherefrom were you returning?’’

‘’Oh, I was returning from Singapore. ‘’ she said looking at the busy Bangalore evening traffic.

‘’That’s where you stay with your husband, right?’’ he leaned back on the nest chair, throwing a searching glance at her.

‘’Yes’’ Her voice dropped.

‘’So, were you about to take a connecting flight when the accident happened? Where to?’’

‘’ah, yes, um,’’ she was stumbling,’’ yes, to Kolkata. Then I changed my mind and decided to stay at my uncle’s place in Bangalore for a few days.’’ She seemed to be weaving something in a jiffy.  Farhan looked at her disturbed face. The neon light of the street vehicles falling on the contours of her chiseled facial features made it look more beautiful. He could make out very easily that she was lying. But he wanted her to speak the truth.

‘’and your husband let you travel all the way from Singapore in this state?’’

‘’It is not a big deal, you see.’’ She looked up at him for a second and then looked away, ‘’ Roop knows I can take care of myself.’’ She tried her best, but her eyes betrayed her.

She stood up slowly and held the balcony railing firmly with her hands. She stood still for quite some time. Her jaws were tightening and her face had lost its color.

Farhan was feeling very uneasy. He should not have asked her. He was about to apologize when she turned towards him and asked very casually,’’ How’s your wife?’’

‘’ my wife…’’ he stopped midway.

‘’yes, I mean, your wife Aisha. How’s she?’’ she went on to say more. ‘’do you remember that we share the same wedding date?’’

He nodded. She remembers everything; even the dates. ‘’Oh yes, both on 24th of April, same year.’’

‘’She’s doing well.’’ He replied, looking away. He could not look into her eyes.
