This had to make you wonder about the war, with the implications it presented. Here was the enemy within your own perimeter, looking over your defenses and equipment. This was a strategy of the Viet Cong, it could either make you chuckle or cry. They could count numbers of men, moral of the soldiers, and any buildup if it was in progress. This was their style, like snakes in the grass crawling and looking. Your friend in the day and a knife in your back at night.

The strange thing was the men of military age in Viet Nam were in the army of South Viet Nam. Usually in the war in some, out of the way place. The big question was, why were men of military age working. There could have been a few locals. But it was the big question. It perplexed me, looking into their eye's I knew who they really were and why they were present. You could feel the bitter hatred that oozed from there demeanor.

The bottom line was we were giving work to the Viet Cong. Feeding his family if any, and anything else Charlie [nickname for Viet Cong ] could find to make a boobie trap, etc.  When you stared at the guy, you just knew he was shooting at you at night. Their favorite time of strategy. It was one of the more frustrating aspects of the messy war. How could Americans compete with this sort of strategy and situation.

We talked about it at times, but what could you do. That was just the way things were in the crazy war. They had an identification card, processed by the authority. They were given to all Viet Nam citizens. On the black market, I'm sure the cards could be had for a few dollars, or just counterfeited. At the bottom line, there we were with big brother the enemy looking at us an planing the next move.

The fact that the enemy could persist in this manner was very frustrating. The Viet Cong were determined, and vigilant in this area of strategy. It worked on the minds of the American soldier and was just one more iron in the firer.  They, the Viet Cong understood this factor. They knew it was time like a glass filling with water, that would overflow. It made you just wonder about the war more and it's reasons and what ever.
