Chapter 2: It Meant Nothing

Picture this: Little groups of cliques surrounding each other in huddles, jocks, cheerleaders, nerds, geeks, stoners, the usual. Kids laughing, crying, making inappropriate noises. Everything a high school offers, and then Dylan and I. We stood with our of our legs bent, foot on the wall behind us. Dylan took a Ziploc bag out of his backpack and took a sandwich out of it. “Want some?” He asked, a smile blooming on his face “What kind is it?” I asked “Well, the usual. Ham, cheese, a slice of turkey. Some mayo maybe.” I nodded and we took bites in sync. People were snickering and laughing as all of the student body gathered (like always) outside the school in the morning. No teachers supervised it. Kids only took it as an opportunity to get stoned or make out behind the bleachers. I noticed Dylan glance over at something on the far end of the pavement and begin “I’ll be right back. Have to use the bathroom.” He put his sandwich in the bag and slipped it in his backpack. I noticed him head in the wrong direction. When I knew it was safe to go, I followed him.

I followed him to the bleachers. I saw him there with Stephanie Jones, hottest (and stupidest) cheerleader on the team. They were kissing! Could I believe my eyes? Was my mind playing a game on me? Was this one of those PRANKED! game shows where the whole thing is staged and it’s all just to punk you? I hoped it was. I felt my stomach doing back handsprings and flops as I walked back over to Dylan and I's things and stood the same way I had been standnig before. "Hey, what's wrong?" Dylan waved and as soon as he looked at me, his face grew with concern "Nothing," my face went fro sad and droopy to happy and normal "I just though I saw a, ur, rat." I smiled at my briliant idea. "Rats? You know that the school had a rat infestation three years ago that still hasn't entirely been fixed?" Dylan was one of those people who knew everything there was to know right when you needed to know it. Unless it had to with the celebrity world, in that case, he was like a baby turtle trying to find his way to the ocean when the beach is filled with flashlights. "Of course I knew that." I smiled with a fake look on my face. "Ok, well," he glanced at his watch. After checking the tiime on my phone, I butted in " school starts in 5 minutes so, I'm going to head to my locker." I turned back. I never thought I would say this, but for the first time since I met Dylan, I never hated him more.
