Chapter one

It all seemed perfect. The grassy hillside, tickling the back of my neck as I lay down and stared at the beautiful sunset – a flower blooming backwards, slowly allowing its red loom to occupy the autumn air about it. Crimson leaves flew majestically on the light breeze, chasing each other in circles above and around me.

It was such a shame none of that could last…

* * *

Sitting down at the bus stop, I wondered what I would be doing today. It was a stupid thing to wonder really – I knew exactly what I would have been doing: typing, calling and answering; just like any other day. I saw the birds rise up all together, as if they had mental powers to know to move as an entire group with what seemed like no communication, cutting through the air with their perfectly crafted wings and felt the deep roar soring down my ears: the bus was coming down the road. I dreaded getting on, spending yet another day in melancholy.

So, I didn’t get on the bus. Instead, I boarded a train into unknown territory. The unfamiliar number on the train’s front sharpened fear carvings into my brain. However, somehow, I gained a new feeling of authority over my fears and dismissed them like children, I didn’t know where I was going and didn’t care. There was a cliché in me, almost making me get on the train with so much confidence it felt like a dream. A dominating, powerful dream. I was determined that today would be an adventure! Tingling tickles infected my feet as they boarded, stepping on to floor that felt the same as other trains but so different. My thighs tightened when they felt the sharp prickles of the fur on the seat poke them through my tights. Soon, my senses became used to the foreign smell and feel of my surroundings and I unconsciously allowed my tiredness from working endless hours overpower me and push fleeting dreams into my mind, carrying me away to new worlds.

Stealing a peek at the new world surrounding me, I realised how thoughtless I had been. Fear of the unknown consumed my entire body and soul, forcing me to sheepishly toddle out of the musky train, swerving awkwardly in between unfamiliar buildings and unfamiliar roads, packed with unfamiliar people, who all seemed to be staring at me like an unfamiliar trespasser from a different world altogether. This in turn created a new dread of walking into hectic streets, and I did my best to find the emptiest road possible to find in 5 seconds and walked down it, not knowing or questioning why there were not many people down this one.
